And in fairness, the speculation is valid, given how often we see GMs with good working relationships continually line up on trades.  Plus, L.A. is always on the lookout for pitching help.

Thoughts on the Workman, Hembree deal
Mark P
9:09
Immediate results notwithstanding, seems like a good move for both teams.
Jerry
9:10
Do u think the giants could get a top 100 prospect for gausman and Watson
Mark P
9:11
Probably not.  I can see SF packaging both guys to improve their trade return, but you're not getting a premium type of prospect back for two non-elite rental players
Joshua
9:12
Much like the Zach Cozart for Will Wilson trade, what type of prospect would the Angles have to include in order to rid themselves of Justin Upton's awful remaining 2 years and $51 million. Seems to me including a prospect to get that money then allocated to a free agent starting pitcher would make some sense.
Mark P
9:13
Upton has a full no-trade clause, so such a deal would be tricky to arrange for that reason alone.  Assuming he signed off on a trade, the Angels would have to swap a pretty good minor leaguer to make that happen, which I'm not sure if something they want to have to do again.
Matt
9:13
Ian Kennedy maybe to Yankees for a deal around Chad Green?
Mark P
9:13
If I'm the Yankees, why wouldn't I just keep Chad Green?
Ryan
9:15
How exactly did the Giants "benefit from keeping Bumgarner and Smith?" Both players could have netted them a top 100 prospect each. Instead they get two picks at the back of the 2nd round.
Mark P
9:16
If you recall from last year's trade deadline, the only top 100 prospects being dealt were for players who had more than one year of control.  Smith and Bumgarner wouldn't have netted any real premium assets.
If such assets were available, I have no doubt Zaidi would have dealt either pitcher

The only thing about Bogaerts that makes me feel like there’s a chance they consider it is his opt out after 2022. They could get a nice haul for him now and turn around and sign a FA like Seager or Lindor in 2021 and still avoid a full teardown. If I was a Red Sox fan I wouldn’t be mad at it
Mark P
9:18
But that opt-out is in two years, and a lot can happen between now and the end of 2022.  Plus, the existence of that opt-out will also somewhat limit Boston's return in any Bogaerts trade, since other teams will also be worried about that clause

Any speculation on what the Padres are up to at the moment. Been hearing anything from bullpen arms to even Whit Merrifield.
Mark P
9:18
I highly doubt KC would move Merrifield.  I suspect San Diego's focus will be on lots of relief pitching
Matt
9:19
A SP from Indians and JBJ from Red Sox who says no?
Mark P
9:20
The Indians say no, since they want to actually upgrade in the OF, not bring in another struggling player like Bradley
Jim
9:21
Is Yordan Alvarez the most fragile 23-year-old in the history of 23-year-olds?
Mark P
9:22
Some players just have bad knees.  Hopefully this surgery can correct the problem to some extent but Alvarez might be a DH-only player at best already.
9:23
It isn't ideal, certainly, though he can stay on the field and produce like his 2019 numbers, the Astros would be happy with that from the DH spot
Jim
9:23
Why is Lynn the least likely to be moved?
Mark P
9:24
Controllable at a low cost in 2021, which appeals to both trade partners but also to the Rangers themselves.  I'm assuming Texas is planning to contend next year, so they'll want Lynn in the rotation unless they receive a standout offer.
Zach P
9:24
This McKenzie kid really making it hard for me to get my 2nd chance
Mark P
9:25
Cleveland's ability to develop young pitching is really something else.
Nationals
9:27
Why are we not as good as everyone thought?
Mark P
9:27
Injuries, lost some key players in the offseason and....it's been 25 games.  Obviously that stands out in a 60-game season, but as a real sample size, 25 games is nothing.
Joe
9:28
Yaz early favorite for MVP?
Mark P
9:29
Tatis, Betts, or Harper might have something to say about that.  But it would admittedly be really cool seeing Young Yaz (basically out of nowhere) win an MVP 53 years after his grandfather
The big red 1
9:30
Will the reds trade bauer before the end of the month?  He has said in the past he wants to test free agency
Mark P
9:31
If another team makes an offer that the Reds consider better than the QO draft pick they'd receive for letting Bauer walk this winter, they might go for a trade.

But that also assumes Cincinnati will be sellers.  They're one good week from being strongly back in the playoff race.
Matt
9:32
Do Ray's make another Trade?
Mark P
9:32
Rays definitely seem likely to make some deadline additions, likely on the pitching side given all of their injuries.
Fence Sitter
9:33
You didn’t answer the Bauer question so I thought I’d give a hot take. Assuming a full year next year, Bauer will sign a Lebron esque 1+1 deal. $45 mil next year with a player option for the same amount in 2022.
Mark P
9:34
That number seems awfully high.  I realize baseball and basketball have totally different economic pictures, but LeBron at that kind of money is a very worthwhile investment since he can single-handedly make a team into a contender.  As good as Bauer is, he isn't in that tier...no player is.

9:34
I thought I would hate the extra innings runner on 2nd rule, but it's been nice having games end quickly and it creates new strategy decisions. Any chance this gets carried over indefinitely??
Mark P
9:35
I must admit, this rule has grown on me.  My preference would still be that the runner starts on first rather than second, but as much as I railed about how the rule change would come off as a cheap way to end a game....it's pretty fun.
Matt
9:36
If Epstein decides to depart; who is a favorite to land him next? LAA? I’d guess bigger market.
Mark P
9:38
Epstein's deal runs through 2021 if I recall correctly.  So the Angels specificially could retain Eppler for another year (or let Eppler walk and install an assistant GM as the top guy for a year) and then take a run at Theo in the 2021-22 offseason.

Or, given how things seemed to sour between Epstein and Maddon, Theo probably doesn't go to Anaheim as long as Joe is there.

Mike Minor get moved with Andrus a throw in?
