Andrus' contract makes him a heck of a bigger factor in any deal than just as a "throw-in"
Matt

Who are some players we are not paying attention to but should?
Mark P
9:43
Looking at the league-wide WAR leaderboard a moment ago while discussing NL MVP candidates, there are a lot of rather surprising names near the top of the list.  Mark Canha and Robbie Grossman out in Oakland, Ian Happ putting his rough 2019 behind him...maybe even a guy like Brandon Lowe, who I think many figured would be good, but probably not AL MVP candidate good

How much more run can the Jays really give to Drury if they're planning on chasing a wild card spot? He's an almost automatic out and they have Panik and Espinal filling the exact same role.
Mark P
9:45
The trouble is that Bichette's injury leaves the Jays shorthanded in the infield, so they have been forced to deploy Drury/Panik/Espinal much more than they would've preferred.
And while Drury has struggled badly, Panik and Espinal have been just as unproductive at the plate

Do you see the Giants being able to deal guys like Belt, Cueto and Longoria at the deadline if they eat some of their salaries? Or will they have to wait till 21 to deal them?
Mark P
9:46
The Mark Melancon trade for full money last year taught me that I can't really rule out any potential Giants deal, but I'd guess they'd have to eat some significant money.

if only the Indians could develop hitting like they develop pitching Re: Triston McKenzie yesterday

In fairness, it's not like the Tribe don't have some excellent homegrown position players (Lindor and Ramirez leap to mind)

love your chats! Do you think there is any interest from teams in any Tigers players?
Mark P
9:50
Thanks!  I can see Schoop being moved, he stands out as a logical trade chip.

It's probably been addressed, but with all these 7 inning double headers on tap, what IF a pitcher threw a No Hitter or a Perfect Game... would it / they "officially" count, given "the powers that be" expunged non 9 inning No-nos and the like a few years ago?  Asking for a friend... :)
Mark P
9:53
I don't think the league made any ruling about this, since they might just be quietly hoping it never happens and they have to deal with the bad PR of "taking away" someone's no-hitter or perfecto.

Or the firestorm if someone threw a perfect game or no-hitter over nine innings, but then lost it in the 10th when the automatic runner scored without anyone reaching base.

The list of Rangers who could be dealt is a mile long. So how about this ... who should be off limits in trade talks?
Mark P
9:56
Great question, and I like this exercise when trying to determine a team's trade candidates.

Honestly, giving the Rangers' roster a quick once-over....nobody?  Obviously none of the top 25-30 prospects, but besides them, you could make a case for just about anyone on the roster.
9:58
Solak, Calhoun, IKF, Joely Rodriguez, Allard are the ones I'd think hardest before moving, and only for a very interesting offer

we are the best team in baseball, but just how good are we?
Mark P

I wouldn't at all surprised if Oakland wins the World Series this year.  That good.

How hard would it be for the Padres to pull a Josh Hader trade
Mark P
10:01
SD has the minor league depth necessary to get the Brewers' attention on such a trade, and if you're the Padres, Hader is a controllable and elite pitcher perhaps worth that kind of investment.

That all being said, Hader is "just" a reliever (albeit obviously an awesome one).  Since we've seen lots of great relievers suddenly drop off from one year to the next, the Padres might hesitate at making a big trade package for such an asset.
Rick Hahn
10:02
How do I upgrade RF this offseason? Mazara hasn’t been exactly great in his career and doesn’t seem to be progressing much
Mark P
10:04
(Rick Hahn = White Sox GM)

In a perfect world for the White Sox, they'd have Micker Adolfo occupying right field in a year or two, but that's not at all a sure thing.  We've seen that Hahn isn't hesitant to make a big free agent play, though lots of lower-cost options could be available if there is a market crunch as many predict

Will the Tigers keep bringing up these kids to get some time against  mlb talent  Al Kaline was pretty  young  when  he  came up why not Riley Greene
Mark P
10:06
Al Kaline was a unique player in almost every respect, since obviously the vast majority of youngsters aren't physically or mentally ready to play Major League Baseball without some real seasoning.

The last thing the Tigers would want to do is call up a prospect too quickly and watch him get hurt, or get his confidence ruined or timing thrown off.

What’s in the water in the Bronx? Why can’t anybody stay healthy over there?
Brian Cashman
10:08
Did the focus on signing Gerritt Cole hurt our depth?  We could use Didi, Romine, and Betances right now.
Mark P
10:09
These two questions sort of relate to each other, as the Yankees have pretty good depth for a normal team, but not one that just gets crushed by injuries for two years in a row.

Now, "crushed" is a relative term since the Yankees were awesome last year and they'll cruise into a playoff spot this year.
Yankees
10:10
Do we return to last year's talks for Ken Giles?  We ALMOST pulled off a deal.
Mark P
10:10
With Giles still on the injured list, I'd doubt it

10:11
To late to ask Shane Bieber to sign a team friendly deal?
Mark P
10:12
Possibly, in terms of being a true early-career discount.  Though an extension at this point could still gave the Tribe some money if Bieber keeps on being elite.  Bieber is controlled through 2024 and isn't eligible for arbitration until 2022, so for now, Cleveland can enjoy him at a bargain price.
Brendan
10:14
Howdy Mark! Who do you think the Nats go after at the trade deadline?
Mark P
10:14
Covered this in a post earlier tonight, but the obvious needs are relief pitching and another hitter who can play multiple positions (probably a corner IF type).

10:16
Any chance any of these guys get traded this week Story, Lindor, Bogaerts, Merrifield, Rosario, or Trea Turner?
Mark P
10:17
Rosario makes some sense as a trade chip for pitching.  The Twins were shopping him to some extent over the winter.

As for the other four guys, I'd be stunned to see them dealt.
Bob
10:18
Think the Phillies should try and pull an Aroldis Chapman with JT Realmuto? Trade him for a top 100 prospect then throw a bunch of $ at him this winter?
Mark P
10:19
It's a risk, as even for a top catcher like Realmuto, I wonder if a team would be willing to give a truly quality prospect for a rental player.  I'd think it would need to be a club with a very deep farm system that could figure it was worth the risk.

And if you're the Phillies, then you have to worry that JTR doesn't suddenly like playing for this hypothetical contender with a deep farm system and chooses to re-sign with them instead of returning to Philadelphia
