Free agency doesn't open until five days after the World Series, so there's plenty of time for the Angels and Phils to get a new GM in place
Astros

Any chance Verlander retires after 2021 due to the end of his contract and him having TJ?
Mark P
8:03
There's definitely a chance, just because the road back from TJ surgery is a long one even for guys who aren't in their late 30's.  But, Verlander has the benefit of a clean history of arm trouble, and I suspect we'll see him on a big league mound again

Baez to the Jays to play 3rd base, any thoughts?
Mark P
8:04
If Baez goes to the Jays, Bichette will be the one moving positions
Qualifying Offers
8:05
Any scuttlebut on how these will work this year, how they’ll be valued & who’s expected to get one.
Mark P
8:05
As far as I know, there isn't much of anything changed with the QO system.
8:07
In terms of who will get one.....off the top of my head, Bauer, Realmuto, Springer, DJL, probably Semien though I think there's a decent chance he'd accept, Gregorius, Tanaka
Stroman is an interesting case, I can see an argument either way

Does George Springer eclipse 100 million?
Mark P
8:08
Yes

If Clevinger and Lamet have not thrown off a mound just 2 days before series starts, there's no way they will be on the roster, right? Am I missing something?
Mark P
8:09
Clevinger threw a bullpen just today
170m cardinals

Will anyone take vet contracts ?
Mark P
8:11
I could see the Cards discussing bad contract swaps, in hopes that they could maybe benefit from a player who just needs a change of scenery.
Kenley
8:13
If your Doc Roberts do you trust him? His MPH is way down and he keeps missing his spots
Gonsolin
8:13
What do you think of making him the Dodgers closer his split is off the hook?
Mark P
8:14
The last thing the Dodgers need is another bullpen meltdown in the playoffs, and you're right, Jansen has looked a bit off this year (though his results have still been very good).  Gonsolin is an interesting relief weapon for the playoffs, no doubt, but putting him into the ninth inning of such high pressure games is itself a risk
Joey Jojo Shabdoo

More interesting series: A's vs Stros or Yanks vs Rays
Mark P
8:16
First of all, that's the worst name I've ever heard.

"Interesting" is a broad term, but Rays/Yankees promises to be such a clash.

Is it time to explore cutting bait with vlad? Guy just isn't putting it together both on the field and off. No use in optioning him and the guy was a bit of a flop even at 1b. Trade material for some more SP?
Mark P
8:18
He is 21 years old, with barely over one full season of MLB action (183 games) under his belt.  Way too soon to give up on him.
Dave

Chances Phillies try to resign Gregorius.
Zach
8:21
Who is the Phillies starting SS on opening day?
Mark P
8:22
Re-signing Didi would make a lot of sense for the Phils, since I'm not sure they're crazy about turning the position over to Kingery.
John Ritchie

Should the Padres start MacKenzie Gore against the Dodgers?
Mark P
8:23
Speaking of putting young players into high-pressure spots....a start?!
Kevin Gausman
8:24
Do I get a qualifying offer?
Mark P
8:24
No

Mariners hardly have any money on the books we sign Bauer to  have an ace & DJ to play second base ...any possibility?
Mark P
8:26
I guess it can't be ruled out, but it would seem like an awfully bold win-now push for a team that doesn't seem to have the overall depth to be ready to contend
Geotheo
8:28
Do the Orioles pick up Iglesias’s option? Or do they give the SS job to Richie Martin?
Mark P
8:28
I would guess they pick up the option.  It isn't expensive ($3.5MM) and Iglesias was unexpectedly great in 2020
8:29
That's it for me tonight, thanks for all the questions!  Back next weekend for another chat, though it won't be on Sunday evening
