He has looked like a goner for a while, and now that the Cubs are just about done, I certainly expect his tenure there to end.
Billy Beane
7:12
The name of the game is winning WS titles and generating interest in your fan base so that you draw a lot of fans and generate a lot of revenue for your owners.  I have constantly churned out players and when they get to be good, I trade them to other teams (my trades have been iffy if you look at them) and as a result fans don't get attached to the team and the team has one of the lowest attendance in MLB.  And oh by the way, I never seem to win the big one.  And also, I claim to be in a low revenue area but the SF Bay Area is not a small market (albeit shared with another team).
Connor Byrne
7:14
Beane doesn't control how much money the A's can spend. And every exec makes iffy trades. Any credit for the good ones? Was Marcus Semien not a trade acquisition?
SDJanson
7:14
Why did you answer - I hope not Matheny to manage KC?
Connor Byrne
7:14
Because I don't think he's a good manager.
Scoops McClatchy
7:14
Whose bat do you like better for career -- Bo Bichette or Keston Hiura?
Connor Byrne
7:15
Good question. Think I'd take Hiura.
Billy Beane
7:15
Was Josh Donaldson a good trade?
Connor Byrne
7:16
Nope. Didn't like it at the time, don't like it now. But that's an example of Beane being somewhat hamstrung by budget. Donaldson was getting more expensive at the time.
Jerry Dipoto
7:18
Who have I got that are keepers and who am I, being addicted to the rush of new shinies, am I most certain to try and trade or sign in the offseason?
Connor Byrne
7:18
Shed Long looks like a keeper for the Mariners. They probably think the same of JP Crawford, so that's a middle infield to build around. The rest is just about anyone's guess with Dipoto at the helm (though I doubt Mitch Haniger will move after such a limited season).
The Final Boss
7:19
If your standard for good GM is Wins a WS and has never made a bad trade, then you like zero GMs.
Connor Byrne
7:19
Agreed. The person posing as Beane can't stand him as an exec, which is fine, but I'm on the other side.
Ed
7:20
Will David Stearns ever acquire starting pitching or will he always sign 4-5 starters?
Connor Byrne
7:21
Well, the Brewers aren't really in position to break the bank on starters via free agency, and I can't blame Stearns for being hesitant to bankrupt his farm to acquire people via trade. What he's doing seems to be working.
Guy Incognito
7:22
Is this an exceptionally confrontational chat? Or are you just choosing to engage in the back-and-forth today?
Connor Byrne
7:23
Not sure I'd say "exceptionally confrontational" (hopefully not, anyway). I just vehemently disagree with the Beane bashing, and have chosen to respectfully argue against it.
Soxhata
7:23
Do you feel Brett Gardner has proved enough this year to sign again what the yankees
Connor Byrne
7:24
If the Yankees want him back, that's where he'll play in 2020. Regardless, he has done more than enough to merit another solid short-term payday.
Anti-tanking
7:25
What will you do to prevent/discourage teams from tanking or do you think tanking is necessary evil
Connor Byrne
7:25
I'd like to see a cap floor implemented, but that's probably not going to happen.
mike
7:26
will alex cora  will the new gm make the call if he stays or will he bring his own manger of redsoxs
Connor Byrne
7:26
The Red Sox higher-ups have already said Cora's staying as manager, and I can't fathom a new exec letting him go anyway.
Cap Floor
7:27
I think you might mean salary floor...
Connor Byrne
7:27
Yes, salary floor, as there's no actual cap. Thanks.
Harry Carey
7:28
What would you think about changing the draft so that the team closest to the playoffs get the earliest draft picks? Reward teams for competing.
Connor Byrne
7:28
Which would make it even harder for awful teams to climb out of the basement. As I said last week, I prefer draft order going by record.
Kyler Murray
7:29
Cardinals are 0-3, why did I quit my day job with the A’s?
Connor Byrne
7:30
A lot more money to be made (at least for now) as the #1 pick in the NFL.
7:31
That's enough for me this week. As always, thanks for reading/asking questions. Sorry if I couldn't get to yours. See you next time!
