This weighed on my mind when I was writing up those qualifying offer pieces this week.  I think I'd be feel more comfortable with Hendriks on my team than Semien next season, since a case can be made that 2019 was an aberration for Semien.

Chris Archer future ???
Mark P
1:25
The Pirates will decline the option, and Archer will then sign somewhere (probably not Pittsburgh) on a low-cost one-year, MLB contract or perhaps even a minor league deal.

I can reasonably extend Seager, right?
Mark P
1:27
Definitely.  The Dodgers have the resources to extend or re-sign any player they see as a true cornerstone.  We've seen it over the years with guys like Kershaw, Jansen, Turner, and the biggest example was just a few months ago with the Betts extension
Masahiro Tanaka
1:29
Starting to think my career in pinstripes is over. Can the Phillies offer me a 3 year contract worth $60 million?
Mark P
1:30
Philly's payroll situation is a little unclear, as they have some money coming off the books but are also known to be hurting from a lack of revenue (like every other team).
Given that Middleton is very eager to win now, I wouldn't be surprised to see him green-light another notable signing, however
1:31
But $60MM/three years seems steep for Tanaka

Poll request:  Have you missed the  pitcher batting in the NLCS?
Mark P
1:32
Nope.  Granted, I grew up watching American League baseball so I'm partial to the DH anyway.

Jose quintana or Jon Lester to the Braves on a one year pillow contract, maybe with an option?
Mark P
1:34
Both make sense as potential buy-lowish targets for Atlanta

Does Wong stay or go?
Mark P
1:36
I suspect he'll stay, though I could see the Cardinals trying to work out some kind of an extension to lower his AAV.  Wong isn't at all part of the problem in STL, since he adds enough on defense to make up for his general lack of hitting

I don’t believe you wrote the Qualifying Offer piece on pitchers, but a significant reason the Yankees might not offer Tanaka a QO is they’re over the competitive balance tax and will receive no more than a 4th round pick as compensation.
Mark P
1:37
I did write that piece, so.....oops!

That still might not be disincentive to issue a QO, however.  Getting a fourth-rounder back is better than nothing.

Do you think given the short year this year, and the tenuousness of next year makes it more likely the MLB and MLBPA work out a new CBA to avoid a complete lockout in 22?
Mark P
1:39
I would like to think that cooler heads and logic will prevail between the league and the MLBPA, since the last thing the sport needs is a work stoppage.  But, the two sides can't seem to agree on anything with a public brouhaha, so I'm not optimistic.

Do we trade trout ?

No
Michael Hill

Am I headed to the Reds?
Mark P
1:41
A lot of dots were being connected that way on Twitter this morning, given that Hill is from Cincinnati.

Personally, I'd be interested in seeing it.  Hill seems like one of the most widely respected execs in baseball, since everyone has sympathy for how he was hamstrung by Loria all those years.  I'd like to see what Hill could do if given free reign to run a front office.

Know anything about the housing market in Boston?

Frasier and Lillith had a pretty nice townhouse

All the travel would have to be tough on Larussa at 76, no?
Mark P
1:45
Not really certain what the link is between the White Sox and TLR.  Obviously Jerry Reinsdorf makes the final call on who will manage the team and he decides he wants his old friend back, it'll happen.  But La Russa makes a lot more sense in a front office advisory role that he does as the actual manager.
Gary Sánchez
1:46
Are the Yankees done with me. Should I pack my bags? Where you think I might go?
Mark P
1:47
Of the teams who got the least from the catching position in 2020, Cleveland, Colorado, Washington, Arizona all seem kind of feasible.
1:48
Sanchez will get interest if shopped, since I bet a lot of teams think they can fix him (or they think he just needs a change of scenery).  But obviously no team will be willing to trade anything of a premium value for him, and the Yankees won't dump him for nothing
MLB 2021
1:48
What chances are you giving that the season starts on time with some capacity of fans in all stadiums?
Mark P
1:50
Only a few cities will be cleared to have some fans.  As to whether we start in March and whether the season will be 162 games....I'd lean towards less than 50 percent at this point
Shane
1:50
Do you think the Twins resign nelson Cruz?
Mark P
1:51
Yeah, I'd guess they work out another contract.  Seems like mutual interest on both sides.
That's it for me today, thanks for all the questions!  Enjoy Game Seven!
