Over or under Red Sox finish the season over .500 ?
Mark P
8:39
They need a lot of work on that rotation, so I'd tend to say under .500 at this point

What are the odds the Cardinals do nothing and come back with exactly the same team as last year (minus wainwright and Molina)? Follow up- is that a playoff team?
Mark P
8:39
Low, and no
8:40
The Cards might not be super-active, since they can rightly see themselves as a team that could have been even better were it no for their COVID outbreak.  But, they're certainly going to have to do something, even if it's just an infielder addition to replace Wong

Yankees resign Dj and Tanaka
Mark P
8:42
This was my prediction in the free agent picks contest, but if both are re-signed, that would probably be it for major Yankees moves.  They'd have to get creative with trades to free up payroll space to do anything else noteworthy
Chris
8:43
Think Kyle seager is on the mariners when the season starts?
Mark P
8:43
Yep.  Not many, or any, teams will be interested in that "poison pill" of an extra guaranteed year on his contract in the event of a trade.
Chris
8:44
Why wasn't Roberto osuna on your top free agent list? He might not get signed by anyone, but is also a top player
Mark P
8:45
He has a balky elbow and might still need Tommy John surgery, so no dice on Osuna
John
8:46
Is it a near lock that either Realmuto or McCann signs with either Mets or Phillies? Both want to compete, both need a catcher.
Mark P
8:47
It does seem likely that one of those two will sign with one of those teams.  But, a lot of teams need catching, don't forget....what if Toronto signed JTR and Washington signed McCann?

You mentioned earlier about the domino effect at SS. When the dust settles, would trading for Jose Iglesias be a short term option? Only making 3.5 million and no obligation after that. He would be Plan B for teams that lose out on Simmons, et. al
Mark P
8:49
There are enough shortstops out there that Iglesias might be more of a Plan C or D, but you're right, I would expect the Orioles to get some level of interest
John

Do you get to go to winter meetings? I’m assuming it’s virtual this year, but have you ever been in the center of a big deal/signing and what was it like?
Mark P
8:50
I've personally never been, though some of the other MLBTR staffers have attended in the past.

Favorite board games?

Monopoly, Ticket To Ride, pretty much any trivia game

Do you feel like MLB is continuing to lose young people with the offseason (just like the game itself) feeling way too slow?  The NFL and NBA (even in a normal year) seem to go from season to draft to offseason (and signings happen in a day or two).  MLB seems to lose its audience and fans attention by being dormant for months after the season.
Mark P
8:52
It feels like "baseball is losing younger audiences!" has been a talking point for decades, yet there's still plenty of interest in the sport
8:53
The NBA/NFL free agent flurry makes for a few days of nonstop headlines, but then the rest of their offseasons are pretty quiet.  Baseball is theoretically more newsworthy since a big signing could happen any time between November and Opening Day (or beyond)
Re: Nats
8:54
Nats have apparently checked in on Bryant. I think a deal is unlikely, but is the Nats' interest at least an indication that the Nats are willing to spend ~$20m/yr on a bat?
Mark P
8:54
Possibly, though I would suspect the Nats would send some money back Chicago's way in such a trade.
8:55
Wait, that is to say, the Nats wouldn't absorb all of Bryant's contract
Bryan
8:55
Will MLB Trade rumors post all the free agents after the non-tender deadline?
Mark P
8:56
Definitely.  Our free agent lists and the FA Tracker will be updated throughout the day

Could the A’s possibly be in on Kim? Fill the Semien hole, and they’ve showed they will pay money to overseas players out of nowhere like they did with Cespedes
Mark P
8:58
The Athletics make a ton of sense as a Kim suitor.  Only question is whether they're willing or able to spend that much on anyone, let alone a KBO player

What would a team like the white Sox have to give up to get Blake snell? And would it be the right move for them?
Mark P
9:00
Snell definitely makes a lot of sense for the ChiSox, as he would on a lot of teams.  This will break the heart of that guy who just bought the Madrigal jersey, but Madrigal is the type of player (good prospect, MLB-ready) the Rays would want as a key piece of any trade package.
Tell my dad the truth
9:01
My dad here thinks the Tigers are ready to spend now and I'm saying it won't be till their core young group is in the bigs....whatta ya say?
Mark P
9:02
I think your dad will have to wait until 2022 to see the Tigers spend any significant money
James Click
9:04
Should I be focusing more on resigning Springer/Brantley or trying to bring in new pieces like Brad Hand, JBJ, and Marvell Ozuna?
Mark P
9:04
(James Click = Astros GM)

It seems like Springer is as good as gone, so attention should be turned to some replacements
King Kelly
9:04
If the Jays were to sign Realmuto, would you see Danny Jansen as having high trade value?  Young, cheap, and with a Gold Glove finalist on his resume?
Mark P
9:05
A lot of teams will make calls about Jansen, he'd have definite value.  I'm wondering if Toronto would be more open to trading Jansen or Kirk in the event of a Realmuto signing.
Chris
9:09
I don't understand why the Mets are going to tender syndergaard a contract? He's going to play like half the season right? Then they have to qualifying offer him right? That seems like a lot of money to spend on him coming off his injury
Mark P
9:10
Thor is a guy who has shown All-Star stuff when healthy, so I don't blame the Mets for wanting to get even a half-season out of him.  I wouldn't be surprised if they had talks about a short-term extension (maybe just through 2022) to give Syndergaard some more guaranteed money and maybe more time to get himself fully healthy for a free agent platform year.
