Nats aren't giving up that much
CLAYTON KERSHAW
6:30
I keep reading how my $31M comes off the books after next year, but i resign in LA, right?
Mark P
6:31
I would imagine so, yes.  Kershaw is likely to remain a Dodger for life, unless he decides (now that he has his ring) to play a couple of years in his home state of Texas as a victory lap.

What is the market for Didi Gregorious?  Other than re-signing JT Realmuto, I think getting Didi back is needed.
Mark P
6:33
Every shortstop-needy team (Angels, Phillies, A's, Reds, maybe the Jays or Yankees, etc.) surely has Gregorius on their list.  It just depends if anyone has him atop their list, or if he's seen as a potential Plan B if a Lindor can't be acquired

Do ex-co-worker GMs and PoBOs make more moves with each other than two GMs or PoBO that don't know each other?
Mark P
6:37
A good working relationship and a personal connection doesn't hurt, obviously.  If you get two executives who know each other well and take the same approach to player evaluation, however, those trade talks seem like they could stalemate more often than not (or it ends up like that GIF of the two Spider-Men pointing at each other)

what Is your overall grade for Farhan so far and why?
Mark P
6:38
I'd go as high as a B+

He's kept the Giants quasi-competitive over two seasons, unloaded some contracts (i.e. Melancon), and he has done very well in finding little-known players and turning them into borderline stars

With the Jays possibly taking a run at Realmuto (wishful thinking maybe), what are the Jays current catchers market values?
Mark P
6:41
Pretty much every team has an interest in young catching given the lack of depth at the position, so the Blue Jays would have a lot of trade interest.

I'd probably rank it as Kirk, Jansen, Moreno/Adams, and McGuire from most trade interest to least, though that might vary from team to team, naturally.

Matz for Gary Sanchez...who says no?
Mark P
6:41
I don't think either team would be interested in seeing one of their cast-offs suddenly blossom for the other New York team
Molina
6:42
Would I look good in a Padre uniform being a veteran presence with all the youngsters?
Mark P
6:43
Molina himself said the Padres had shown some interest in signing him, and it makes some sense for just the "veteran leader" reasons you mention.
Ken
6:44
Do you think there will be fans in the stands next year?
Mark P
6:45
At some point in the season, and in certain cities, yes
Brandon
6:45
You think the Giants will be in on Bauer? They have a bunch of money coming off the books after this season and haven't spent on free agents in a while.
Mark P
6:46
Maybe, if Bauer is willing to sign a long-term deal.  If he's still leaning towards shorter-term contracts, even a two-year deal with SF isn't really a fit since it doesn't look like they'll be true contenders in 2021.

Why hasn’t the player’s union done more to increase the salary cap? I like how more teams are spending close to the cap and being more competitive... but has an unchanged salary cap been hurting player salaries?
Mark P
6:47
To be clear, the luxury tax threshold isn't a "cap," though the problem is that a lot of teams are unofficially treating it as such.  The annual limits for the luxury tax were established in the last CBA, and couldn't be altered without renegotiation.

Alderson says the new gm could be the president of baseball ops in a few years?  You buy that?
Mark P
6:48
Sure, I see no reason not to believe that.  Like I said earlier, however, the problem is that if you're a sought-after young executive, are you willing to wait "a few years" to take over a team when you might get a crack at a top job within a year's time?

6:50
do you choose which questions to answer or is it random cause I’ve been trying to ask a question past couple weeks now and ever gotten an answer 😭
Mark P
6:51
I try to pick mostly questions that I haven't seen before, or questions that haven't been asked in a while.  If I haven't selected your question before, it's nothing personal!  There are over 500 pending questions in this queue alone.
Benito

Do you think any aggressive club has bothered to make a serious offer to Bauer/Springer/JTR yet? Not sure who is slow playing more on the big targets be it the clubs or player/agents.
Mark P
6:52
I'm sure at least a couple of teams have put concrete offers on the table
Dave Roberts
6:53
Is it realistic to think I can get Arenado or Lindor
Mark P
6:53
Quite realistic.  The Dodgers have the financial resources and the minor league depth to swing a trade for either
Though just because they could doesn't mean they will, naturally

6:54
over/under 50 wins 2021 Pirates?
Mark P
6:54
Since we don't know if the season will be 162 games yet, I'll take the under.  If it is 162 games....well, I might still think about taking the under.
John
6:55
Do the nats push for an of like springer or push for a corner infielder like Bryant or DJ? Or both
Mark P
6:56
Conceivably Bryant could be both an OF and a corner infielder, though he is also coming off a very rough season.  I think infielder is their bigger need

Am I being shopped to other teams? The Astros “denial” would have made a politician proud.
Mark P
6:59
I don't think teams are lying when they say things like "we aren't actively shopping this player" or "we aren't looking to trade this player."  Neither statement is a hard no, since most teams are willing to trade virtually anybody for the right offer.
The Last of the Marlins Fans
6:59
Do you see the Marlins making waves at all this offseason? There's a ton of young talent that could be used as trade chips
Mark P
7:00
I'm not sure I see them making anything too huge, but a mid-tier signing or acquisition is very feasible.  It remains to be seen if the Marlins think they're now real contenders or if they're not going to go overboard over their postseason appearance
