I would like to think we'll know about a DH within the next month, but it's pretty ridiculous that we've now hit Xmas and still don't have an answer.

As for the season length, late January/early February is my guess, because teams and players will be itching to get Spring Training underway

11:52
how likely do you see the Twins signing Semien to play shortstop and moving Polanco into the utility role left by Marwin G. Then resigning Cruz to make a really scary lineup.
Mark P
11:53
Semien makes a lot of sense for the Twins.  Just comes down to how much they're willing to spend on him.

Why are the Cardinals waiting to do anything till the Yadi and Wainwright issues are settled? They still need an infielder and an outfielder that can hit. Why don't they get Rosario and then swing a trade for Lindor? If they did get Lindor why not have Paulie D play third and let Tommy play second?
Mark P
11:54
It's probably safe to assume the Cardinals are looking into several things at once, not just sitting by the phone waiting to hear from Molina and Wainwright.
Angels mystery RF
11:55
If it’s not Adell, will it be Ward/Walsh or do they sign a veteran OF on a 1yr deal?
Mark P
11:56
Re-signing Brian Goodwin would seemingly make a lot of sense for the Halos, or at least a Goodwin type who can hold his own in a semi-regular role and also easily be moved into a traditional fourth outfielder spot

Would it not be wise for the Blue Jays to forgo the big dollar free agents this year, in favour of a blockbuster trade with the Reds..... Sell the farm for Castillo, Suarez and Winker... by the time their contracts would be up they should have a new crop of prospects in the high minor leagues, and still have the money to extend their own free agents.
Mark P
12:00
I agree to some extent, in that the Jays and Reds seem like natural trade partners.  But I highly doubt any kind of "sell the farm/go all-in" move is coming for the Jays, that isn't the strategy Shapiro and Atkins employ.  No reason to bet everything on 2021 or 2022 when the idea is to have sustainable success for the next decade and beyond.

Any word on Stras's recovery? No one seems concerned about his opening day health, but id be worried with the specific injury he had that it would be a longer term issue.
Mark P
12:01
Mike Rizzo recently said that he expects Strasburg to be all set for Spring Training, so it appears his issue has been corrected

Will Artie go over lux tax to get us in playoffs?
Mark P
12:04
The Angels went over the luxury tax limit in Moreno's first full year owning the year, but that was it.  It seems like the team is treating it like a salary cap line, though you'd think if it meant the difference between acquiring a real game-changer of a player or not, ownership would be open to paying at least a couple of million in tax.  (Especially since Pujols' deal is finally off the books next year.)

I love the idea of a full scale rebuild in Pittsburgh. With that said Who is the best suitor for Musgrove and what would the return look like?
Mark P
12:06
Musgrove honestly fits on just about any team in baseball, whether it's as a middle-of-the-rotation arm on a contender or a more frontline arm on a lesser club.  For two years of control remaining, the Pirates can rightly ask for a pretty decent trade return, but not really a top-level one since Musgrove isn't an ace

Seems like all of the teams in the NL Central are cutting payroll and getting worse. Why doesn't a team like the Cardinals who has very few financial obligations after next season, make a big move or two to really separate themselves from the rest of the division?
Mark P
12:07
According to recent reports, the Cardinals have been looking to make "cash-neutral" trades, which I guess gives them a leg up in a division where everyone else is trying to cut payroll?

If the Indians offered Lindor + Ramirez + Carrasco as a package, How many teams would be calling the Indians. What kind of return would the Indians receive???
Mark P
12:08
They'd receive a very big return but Cleveland wouldn't do this.  Ramirez has enough value on his own that the Tribe would spin him off into a separate trade.

Why not?  It isn't exactly a busy day for transactions news
(Though watch this, now I've jinxed it.)

Will robo-umps become our overlords and work to develop their own system of rituals and holidays, eventually enslaving the human race?   Or will it just have an impact on hitting stats with set zones leading to more walks/hits as players get accustomed to the set zone?
Mark P
12:13
12:14
I think you'll definitely see an impact on hitting stats over time as players adjust.  The bigger change might also be to catchers who are prized for their ability to frame pitches, since that skill will essentially be irrelevant with robo-umps

Why is no one talking about Brantley when he's clearly a better hitter than Springer? Never struckout more than 100 times in 12 seasons. Springer has struckout more than 100 times in every season he's plated, except last season (obv)
Mark P
12:16
Brantley is a fine hitter but Springer has the higher wRC+ (134 to 117 over their careers), plus Springer has more defensive value and less of an injury history

Any memorable Christmas Day FA signings? Bauer announcing he signed with a team today feels about right.
Mark P
12:17
Given Bauer's penchant for showmanship, I can see that happening.  Or maybe he announces on Dec. 31 or January 1, or maybe on January 17 (his birthday)

Chances Colorado make blockbuster trade of story and Arenado together? Say st. Louis or Toronto?
Mark P
12:18
Moving Arenado is difficult enough that I think the Rox would keep Story separate.
Pirates are cheap-o’s
12:18
Over/Under Pirates payroll for 2021: $40M?
Mark P
12:19
They're a little over $46.5MM in projected payroll now, as per Roster Resource.  It'll be close, but I would guess the under

Would adding a corner bat like Charlie Blackmon to our squad improve our ballclub? He's got 3 potential years left on his deal and his contract perfectly aligns in our window of contention? We'd get him for a couple decent, but not superior prospects - something like Jackson Kowar and Nick Liftin?
Mark P
12:21
I don't see the Royals taking on that much money, barring some kind of a contract swap (maybe sending Duffy to Colorado?)

As a Cardinal fan, I'd much rather backload a 4 year deal to Wong than drastically overpay for 2 more years of an, at best, average catcher in Yadi. Any way the Cardinals do that?
Mark P
12:25
I'm not sure a four-year contract for Wong makes sense since I can't imagine he's getting those types of offers on the open market.  As for Molina, I tend to think you're right in that it seems like something of an overpay, but there's so much history between him and the Cards that I get it
