That would be a pretty interesting offer for either side, I must admit.
Dodger Dog

Every chat should start with a statement about the state of the DH and a deceleration that Anaheim isn't trading Mike Trout so we don't have to revisit these every single chat.
Mark P
11:49
Replace Mike Trout with Jo Adell and you're on
Kate

Sounds like white sox are out on the remaining big names like springer and presumably bauer.  Do we see a somewhat impactful addition at DH, rotation or in the pen still?  Do they greenlight enough spending to add in those three spots?
Mark P
11:51
Between Lynn and Eaton, the White Sox haven't spent all that much, so it could be that their strategy is to spread their money around to several players rather than make a big strike for a Springer or a Bauer.

For instance, the market has a lot of DH/outfield types that could be had pretty cheaply as the winter drags on.  Same with relief pitchers, though the upper-tier guys like Hendriks will eventually get paid

Between posey and Molina we are witnessing two of the best and most accomplished catchers of this era.  What’s your take on their HOF chances ?  If you could only put one in, who would it be...?
Mark P
11:52
You can only vote one into Cooperstown....

Yadier Molina (67.9% | 515 votes)

Buster Posey (32.1% | 244 votes)

Total Votes: 759
11:53
Personally, I think both are getting in.  Rings and a long "face of the franchise" stint with a single team carries a lot of weight with HOF voters.
Superintendent Chalmers
11:54
SKINNER!!! How serious are the Yu Darvish trade rumors?
Mark P
11:54
San Diego is the only team officially linked to Darvish in rumors, and as per the report, it wasn't clear if the talks were serious or if the Padres were just checking in
11:55
I'd imagine a lot of teams have called the Cubs to gauge what it would take to acquire Darvish, but I'd lean on the side of him still being in Wrigleyville come Opening Day
Phil
11:57
Royals have been fairly active; do you see them adding anymore?
Mark P
11:58
They're known to be looking for a left-handed hitter, and have been linked to Jurickson Profar.  So it certainly seems like Dayton Moore has a couple more moves up his sleeve.
11:59
I'm liking KC's offseason, by the way.  No big splashy moves but sensible, lower-cost signings with upside.
Jeremy
11:59
Is Jt actually worth 5/125?
Mark P
11:59
He's certainly the best catcher in the sport, so that type of contract isn't an outlandish ask.
Moose
12:01
Royals trade with Reds to get Moose back in KC?
Mark P
12:01
Doubtful if the Royals could send enough salary back (or carve out more extra payroll space) to make such a trade work, but that would be fun.
Angels GM
12:02
I need to fill RF. Who are the good, relatively affordable club controlled guys I could acquire for Jo Adell. Needs to be a very good player with at least three years of club control.
Mark P
12:03
How about a top-ranked prospect whose team's fanbase (at least in these chats) has inexplicably given up on after 38 MLB games?
WhiteSoxFan33
12:04
What does Abreu need to do, beyond a ring or two, to make up for his late start to build a strong HOF case?
Mark P
12:05
Realistically, three more seasons like his 2020 numbers (or for a full-season equivalent, his 2014 numbers).

Or, just play well enough to earn veterans committee consideration in a decade's time and Jerry Reinsdorf will make it happen!

Uncle Steve just tweeted a little while ago that he's gonna give Jared Porter a call to see what's up. Any rumblings of something going down for the Metsies?

Will JTR really improve the Jays that much if signed? Yes I see an upgrade over what the Jays currently have, but is the juice worth the squeeze over going in harder for Springer or DJL? I feel like the Mets actually made the better move in signing McCann. Thoughts?
Mark P
12:10
With all due respect to Danny Jansen, JTR is way way better than Danny Jansen.  And way way better than a guy like Kirk, who has lots of potential but is still very unproven at the big league level.

As a Jays fan who has been about a dozen "catchers of the future" turn out to be nothing, I am all for the team cutting the Gordian Knot and just signing the best catcher in baseball.  As Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star pointed out in a recent mailbag, Realmuto and the Jays might end up as a match based on something of lack of other options, if the Mets sign Springer and the Yankees sign LeMahieu
Stott
12:11
What are the Phillies doing... anything? Is it possible the Phillies go young with Bohn, Stott, Kingery, and Hoskins as an infield while using Segura, Quinn or Haseley  as trade bait for an outfielder or pitcher
Mark P
12:13
It might be some time before the Phillies kick into gear, given that Dombrowski was only just hired.  He might want to take...I don't know, a few weeks, a month....to really oversee the organization and take stock of what he has.

For something like re-signing Realmuto, however, that might be a decision DD, Fuld, and ownership have already signed off on, and now it's just a question of whether Realmuto will take their offer

12:16
Do the Cards sign anyone besides Yadi and Waino ?
Mark P
12:16
Maybe not a signing but I can see the Cards being more active on the trade front than the free agent front
That’s it, Fort Pitt
12:18
Can the Pirates package Polanco with any of their current trade chips to shed his salary? Or is he simply untradeable  at this point?
Mark P
12:19
Polanco is owed $14MM through 2021, so it isn't *that* much salary to take on for an enterprising team.
12:26
Sorry for the delays in the chat, but some sad news to pass on.....the great Phil Niekro passed away last night
Angels
12:27
What package would it take for the Angels to trade for Castillo from the Reds I think this is the right move
Mark P
12:28
This is ironic given my earlier statements, but....Jo Adell.  It would take that kind of blue chip prospect to get Cincinnati to part with a controllable top pitcher like Castillo.

Now, if the Angels offered to take a big contract off Cincy's hands, that might help them get away with offering a package of lesser prospects and keep Adell
Sox fan
12:29
Seems like the Red Sox should be looking to take on salary to add talent to the farm system this offseason. As a fan paying the ticket price Henry’s made plenty to keep spending
Mark P
12:30
Reports indicate that the Sox are indeed being "creative" in looking for ways to take advantage of their payroll space.
Maybe a conduit for prospects or contracts as part of a three-team deal, maybe taking on a bigger contract from another team along with a good prospect, or maybe getting a pricey player from another team in a pure contract dump.

12:31
Do you believe the Cubs will actually trade anybody? Or is this all smoke and mirrors?
Mark P
12:31
Given the last two Cubs offseason, you're not wrong in suggesting that we should wait and see them actually pull off a big trade before we start assuming that Darvish, Bryant, Baez, etc. are as good as gone
