I'm somewhat surrised the Mets did not hire a more experience manager, given ownerships desire to win quickly.  Do you think Luis Rojis w
Mark P

We don't have much evidence Rojas is a good or a bad manager, given how 2020 was such a weird season for everyone and the Mets in particular.  Rojas is a longtime organizational guy, so Cohen and Alderson already know him and obviously think highly enough of him to give him a real shot.

That said, if the Mets underachieve this season, I highly suspect Rojas is replaced.

With the recent report about Benintendi being available, do you think the Cardinals would be a good fit?
Mark P
7:46
Most definitely.  STL was known to be looking for cash-neutral types of transactions, so Benintendi is set to earn $6.6MM this season and then has another arb year, so let's ballpark that at, say, $8MM.

There isn't any one Cardinal making around that amount who makes sense as a Boston trade target, but as part of a larger deal with multiple players involved, sure
James Click
7:47
Which late inning reliever(s) can you guess that I’ll sign?
Mark P
7:48
James Click = Astros GM

It seems like Houston is in on pretty much every closer, so I'll speculate on Colome just because of the past Tampa ties between Colome and Click
Marcell Ozuna
7:48
I've heard almost nothing about him as of late
Mark P
7:49
We had an item about him on MLBTR just yesterday.....saying that there hadn't been any news about him as of late: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/free-agent-notes-ozuna-schwarbe...

Do you see the Giants making small moves this off-season, then all in for 2022?
Mark P
7:49
Seems likely, yeah

Will the Orioles come through, by signing someone of note?
Mark P
7:50
Maybe it depends on your definition of "someone of note," but some well-known infielders are reportedly on the Orioles' radar: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/latest-on-orioles-infield-plans...

What was the thinking behind the AJ Cole signing? They avoided paying him 800k-1mill thru arbitration, yet turned around and gave him a million dollar contract.
Mark P
7:52
Cole's new contract is a minor league deal, so the Jays only owe him that $1MM if he actually makes the team.  Granted, an arb salary also isn't fully guaranteed until Opening Day, but this way the Blue Jays have a bit more flexibility in figuring out how Cole works into their bullpen picture

Seems like it would make sense for the Angels to take on Castellanos in order to get Castillo or Gray from the Reds. This would allow Adell some more time in the minors and then once he's ready, Upton and Castellanos can split time.
Mark P
7:54
Between Upton/Castellanos, that is a heck of lot of money to be invested in two players you aren't planning to deploy every day
Joe Maddon
7:55
Joe Adell for Andrew Benintendi and Nathan Eovaldi. Who says no?
Mark P
7:56
Angels
Whew, two Jo Adell-related questions in a row, I was starting to worry he was no longer the chatroom's favorite subject!

We need a closer on the South Side of Chicago. Liam Hendricks, Brad Hand, or Alex Colome? Which makes more sense?
Mark P
7:57
I would lean against Colome (as opposed to leaning against a column) just because the White Sox seemed like they wanted an upgrade.  Not saying a reunion wouldn't or couldn't still happen, but I would tend to think someone like a Hendriks or a Hand is likelier

where does Wong end up. Doesn’t Wong at 2nd, McNeil at 3rd, Lindor at SS, Dom at 1st (with Alonso at the inevitable DH) sound great?
Mark P
8:00
It does, but where does JD Davis fit into this equation?
Dodgers

Who starts at 3B for the Dodgers this year.....give me your top three possibilities from most to less likely.
Mark P
8:01
I ultimately still think Justin Turner re-signs.
8:02
Beyond him, I'll have a tie for #2 between "Dodgers sign another infielder who isn't DJ LeMahieu" and "Edwin Rios is the nominal starter, though LA still moves people all over the diamond."
Questions
8:02
Will Juan Soto fare well moving to right? Not sure about that one...
Mark P
8:03
At worst, it would be a one-year position change if Washington decides to move on from Schwarber.  But I surely think the Nats wouldn't have explored a position change for their franchise player without being absolutely sure he could at least be passable in right field

Could Mets be interested in getting Keirmaier from Ray's?
Mark P
8:05
Some, but if the Mets wanted a pure glove-only guy, they could find someone who's 80-85% as good as Kiermaier in the field but much less money.
8:06
Not to say that Kiermaier wouldn't get back on track at the plate in a new environment, but from other teams' perspective, they'd have to be looking at him as a glove-only player at this point (and making that same argument to the Rays in any trade talks)

Is Story, SS a trade target. Maybe take Gray, SP as part of package?
Mark P
8:08
That would make a lot of sense for the Yankees, but we won't know anything about their next plans until LeMahieu signs.  If DJLM goes elsewhere, I find it hard to believe the Yankees would just eat the money they had earmarked to re-sign him

Do you think the Brewers have any interest in Kris Bryant?
Mark P
8:09
I doubt Chicago moves Bryant within the division, and I also doubt the Brewers can fit him into their payroll without sending another notable contract back the Cubs' way

What is the Phillies middle infield situation?  Do you envision Segura moving to short?
Mark P
8:10
Feels like that'll be the Plan B for the Phils, as much as it would be a logical fit to get Kingery at 2B and Bohm at 3B.
Steve Cohen

If I cut Robinson Cano and still pay him what he's owed on the rest of his contract, does his 2022 and 2023 salary still count against the luxury tax?
