My strategy of using open forty man spots to pick low hanging fruit as other teams have to make their deductions . Smart ? Or a bunch of nothing ?
Mark P

(Nick Krall = Reds' GM, not the guy from Oh Hello)

Not a bad tactic, gives the Reds some more options to sift through during spring

Mays and Aaron kept from sharing an OF together over $50?! How many championships would that team have won. Infinitybillion? More?
Mark P
11:00
But think of all the financial flexibility that $50 added for the Giants!

Can the Dodgers get Justin bribery from Cleveland?
Mark P
11:02
That is an amazing autocorrect.  Anyway, I don't think the Tribe are looking to move Shane Bieber yet since he is still under control for four years and is still a pre-arb player.  Cleveland won't trade Bieber unless they go full-on rebuild, which (Catch-22) they won't do while they still have an ace like Bieber and an excellent rotation

despite losing Snell and Morton, is Tampa still the best in the ALEast?   Toronto’s rotation is weak and the Yanks’ rotation is swimming in question marks.   Thoughts?
Mark P
11:04
Hmm, interesting poll idea
11:05
Who has the best current starting rotation?

Rays (27.7% | 345 votes)

Yankees (47.2% | 588 votes)

The Yankees still have 40 men on their roster, and have yet too announce DJ and Kluber. Do you see another trade coming to free up spots? I doubt Taillon will cost 3 players on the 40 man. Or do the Yankees DFA someone?
Mark P
11:07
Two 40-man players for Taillon seems reasonable.  From there, sure, some room will have to be created
Sophia
11:08
How much trade value does Taillon actually have after a second Tommy John surgery?
Mark P
11:08
Enough that he'll get a pretty good trade return back to Pittsburgh.  Taillon is still a #2 overall pick, and when healthy has looked like a very capable MLB starter

What do you make of the orioles trying to defer payment in arbitration?
Mark P
11:10
It's a weird move to be sure, but it could be seen as the O's trying to be as flexible as possible.  It's not like deferrals are some outlandish idea in baseball contracts.

Or, it could mean that the Orioles are looking to cut costs as much as feasibly possible.

So, who's trading for Adell and Castillo this week?
Mark P

First Jo Adell mention!  Who had 10:11 CT in the pool?!

Hammering Hank had a better career than Joltin’ Joe.  Agreed?
Mark P
11:12
Agreed.  Dimaggio was obviously an incredible player and his numbers would have been even better if he hadn't lost three seasons to WW2.

But Aaron was at minimum one of the five best players ever, in my opinion.  RIP to the Hammer.

What happened to AA? Going around just offering one year deals? Taking his foot off the gas after his team was one win away from the Series? I dont understand.
Mark P
11:14
They did move quick on Morton and Smyly, so it's not like the team has been sitting on their hands all winter.

The "wait to see if a big star will settle for a one-year deal" trick has worked out pretty great for the Braves thus far, can't blame them for trying it again.

Have not heard much on T Walker being considered by the Jays. Seems like he'd be a great, low risk addition to that rotation?
Mark P
11:16
They had mutual interest at the start of the winter, haven't heard much since.  Walker has been linked to a few other teams as well, so perhaps both sides will circle back once other moves have been completed.
I'm hesitant on the idea of the Jays signing Bauer, but maybe they're waiting to see if he does land elsewhere before firmly looking at other major starters

I’ve seen more signing bonuses as of late. Guessing that is is direct result of covid19 and players wanting more guaranteed up front?
Mark P

Yep, not to mention the possible labor strife coming after the next CBA is up

Joc Pederson seems to be a potential fit in STL. He could platoon in the outfield with Bader and add some power to their struggling offense. Any thoughts on something like this happening?
Mark P
11:20
Pederson makes a lot of sense for STL, but the question is how much money they have available to spend this winter.
Jim
11:20
Preller for Padres done with free agency and trades
Mark P
11:21
I highly doubt Preller is stopping.  As deep as the Padres' roster seems already, he has reached "can't rule anything out
status

Cardinals need offense to contend. Dewitt had shown he’s not willing to spend money. Will it take new owners for the cardinals to be competitive again?
Mark P
11:24
In fairness, the Cards have made the playoffs the last two years, so it's not like they haven't been "competitive."  And the Cardinals have also been willing to spend  --- the problem is that they've invested a lot of money in several players (i.e. Carpenter, Fowler, Mikolas, CarMar) who are real question marks heading into 2021
