What do the A’s do at SS if the lose Semien?
Mark P
11:26
My guess is they sign or trade for someone else at a relatively low cost --- maybe a Freddy Galvis type, or mayyyyybe Andrelton Simmons depending on his price tag
Texas Carl
11:27
Reds have been picking up no name relief pitchers all off season but have been lacking on the SS front... anything going to happen before spring training? That is a big weak spot within a very winable division.
Mark P
11:28
I wonder if all the NL Central teams are warily eyeing each other and saying "hmm, if they're not trying, maybe we also can just stand pat?"
Mark
11:28
Who do you like in today’s NFL championship games?
Mark P
11:29
I'm a big Packers fan, so I'm going to be on pins and needles this afternoon.  I'm cautiously optimistic Green Bay pulls it out, but naturally am worried about facing Tom Brady in a playoff game.

Mahomes is playing and *seems* healthy, I guess?  So I have to pick KC but wouldn't be shocked at a Bills win.
Jus10 Turner
11:30
Hi, I'm 36, I'm still capable of playing everyday at a high level so I wanna 4 yr deal, but my body is starting to disagree. I'd like to stay and play in my hometown & I think they'd like me back, Do I have a multiyear future in LA without a universal DH?
Mark P
11:31
I don't think there's any hope of Turner getting a four-year deal, but my guess is that he'll wind up back in LA after all.
Two-year contract, maybe with a club/vesting option for 2023
Jesse
11:32
Not asking you to predict when the DH question will be resolved, but care to make a guess as to what the hold up is?
Mark P
11:33
The owners and players couldn't agree on a one-topping pizza without a lot of drama, so naturally even something that both sides seem to want can't be simply negotiated without a lot of additional issues tied to it

Wanna guess the Pirates opening day payroll?
Mark P
11:35
Roster Resource currently has it at a little under $44.5MM.

Let's say $40MM as a reasonable guess.

Is there a possibility for the Jays to trade for Zac Gallen? It seems really unlikely that the Diamondbacks will make it out of the NL West or even into the playoffs in the next few years so should they try and rebuild? Just a possible trade framework could be Gallen plus Bumgarner for Moreno, Martinez and Roark, who would say no?
Mark P
11:37
Bumgarner has a five-team no-trade clause, and I wouldn't be shocked if the Jays were one of those five teams.

As for trading Gallen, that would be such a major pivot that I don't see it happening yet.  The D'Backs went into 2020 confident that they had a winning core in place, and they don't seem prepared to move on quite so soon after one (very odd) season.

Where do you see Nelson Cruz playing this year?
Mark P
11:38
Minnesota, after all is said and done
Blue Jays
11:38
Which outfielder will be traded for pitching now that they have Springer? and Will they trade for/sign a 1B?
Mark P
11:40
Between Tellez and Vlad, 1B doesn't seem like a need whatsoever.

The Jays could try not dealing anyone, and just try to juggle at-bats by using the DH spot and giving Vlad an early look at third base.  But, Gurriel's name has come in trade talks, Hernandez makes some sense as a sell-high trade chip, and i'm sure the Jays wouldn't mind moving Grichuk but his trade value doesn't seem very high

Are you a baseball hat collector?
Mark P
11:41
Nope.  My hat of choice is a toque (insert Canadian stereotype here), not a ball cap

11:42
Does 2 years of Benintendi makes sense for Detroit?  Type of player that fits their needs...and what type of return is BOS looking for?
Mark P
11:43
I'm not sure the Tigers will be competitive within the next two years, so he doesn't seem like a great fit for them in the big picture.

11:44
Do you see the Red Sox signing Colome?
Mark P
11:45
It would make sense.  The Sox seem to be looking for multiple years (via at least a club option) in any moves they make this winter.  If Colome is only getting one-year offers, he might be intrigued by a one-year deal plus a vesting option or something
TOM THE BOMB
11:46
The Braves change their name to the Hammers;  keep the tomahawk as their symbol, and keep the tomahawk chop as their crowd action ???    What do you say ??
Mark P
11:47
I am 1000% on board with the idea of the Atlanta Hammers name.  If the team goes that route, however, why not take the next logical step and replace the tomahawk with a hammer?  And make "U Can't Touch This" the crowd chant-along song?
Siemien
11:47
Is my market value hurt by teams not wanting to commit multiple years to a shortstop since next year’s free agent class of shortstops is the best ever and teams want their ss position to be available for one of them?
Mark P
11:48
That's definitely a factor.  Plus, teams might not be quite sure what they're getting in Semien --- the superstar from 2019, or the solid but unspectacular player from the rest of his career?
Joe munoz
11:48
why nyy looking at ozuna ?
Mark P
11:50
As always "team X has interest in a player" can mean a lot of things.  I'd expect the Yankees have probably checked in on almost every free agent just as a matter of general due diligence, just to gauge the market.

So even though Ozuna doesn't seem like a fit at all, it makes sense that the Yankees would at least consider the possibility.
Jedd Gyorko
11:50
I put up a respectable, maybe even good, slash line in MIL last year. Why doesn’t anyone want me this off-season? Where do I land?
Mark P
11:51
Gyorko was good last year, but there are a lot of Jedd Gyorko types in free agency right now.

Besides Trout,  who is the best player in MLB?
Mark P

Where (and how often) will Kim play for the Padres. Doesn't seem like a position is open for him especially with Profar signing. And same question can apply to Profar with Kim signing!
Mark P
11:53
This is something of a "good problem to have" situation for San Diego, but I would suggest that they're also adding depth in case Hosmer and/or Myers revert to their 2019 struggles.
Marcell Ozuna
11:54
Do the Red Sox make the most sense for me?
Mark P
11:55
The Sox are close to the luxury tax limit, so I'm not sure they want to exceed it immediately (and in a year when they might not be one of the three best AL East teams)
Andy

I believe the Mariners plan to see how good they are before ‘22 is very smart. Saving $ and prospects until an established core. Thoughts Mark?
