The Mets, Phillies, and Red Sox have all been reportedly interested in Gonzalez in recent days, and the Tigers and Twins had interest in him earlier in the offseason
DM KC GM
7:36
Is Santander actually available now that his arbitration hearing and ruling are complete?  He would look nice in KC lineup.
Mark P
7:37
Given that the O's seem eager to move any or all salaries, Santander definitely seems available for the right price.

7:38
Which of the 3 is the best SS for the Reds to add: Rosario, Adames, or Villar?
Mark P
7:38
Personal pick, I say Adames because he has a better recent track record and there might still be further upside.

40 of the top 50 free agents are off the board! But still plenty of good options at most positions. I think there are quite a few veteran starting and relief pitchers still available. What do you think?
Mark P
7:39
It's been quite a few weeks, since the "quiet offseason" seemed to suddenly flip the switch and we got this big flurry of moves.
7:40
It's interesting that the first few big moves off the board were pitchers (i.e. Morton, Smyly), and yet now a lot of that second-tier pitching group is still remaining
Braves
7:41
Atlanta still has payroll flexibility right?
Mark P
7:43
Probably not a ton, but yes. The Braves still have some $25-$30MM to go to reach what they would ahve been on the books to spend in a normal 2020 season, so assuming ownership didn't limit their spending too much, there is still some room to maneuver.

Anthopoulos does traditionally like to save payroll space for in-season moves, however, so it remains to be seen if ATL will go anything more major before Opening Day, or if they'll wait for closer to midseason

What do you think about a reunion with David price for the jays? Roark and Anthony Kay going to the Dodgers, jays picking up all the salary. Roark is a throw in to offset the money a bit
Mark P
7:47
I'd think the Jays would have interest there but if I'm the Dodgers, I'm hesitant.  They have enough money coming off the books next winter that ducking back under the tax limit shouldn't be too difficult, so Price's deal isn't that onerous (especially since the Red Sox are still eating part of it).

Plus, LA loves having pitching depth.  Roark is maybe a spare part and Kay is a good young arm, but I would think the Dodgers would prefer a playoff-tested veteran like Price going into another championship run (even with the caveat of Price not pitching in 2020)
Extra Innings
7:48
I hate the runner on second in extra innings but understand the need to finish the game.  What do you think about my personal and untrademarked idea: Inning 10, runner at first. Inning 11, runner at second. Inning 12, runner at third.   If it’s still a tie after 12, game over. It ends in a tie
Mark P
7:48
I like this idea quite a bit, in no small part because I'm way more open to the idea of tie games than most fans.

Bauer is getting paid more than 3 teams total contract commitments. This is a disgrace for baseball as a whole when are they going to put a max cap like in tge NHL and a minimum cap. The owner of the Pirates if he could would field a team for a million dollars which is sad for that city and the team.
Mark P
7:50
Some kind of a salary floor will undoubtedly be a major part of the MLBPA's demands in the upcoming CBA talks, which I'm sure will go over great since the owners love being obligated to spend money.
JBJ

Which team(s) do you see giving Jackie Bradley jr 5 years contract ?
Mark P
Boras has pulled some rabbits out of hats before, but I find it a bit of a stretch to think Bradley gets four guaranteed years at this point, let alone five.

Does Rios and White for Huira make sense for both LAD and Mil?
Mark P
7:52
I doubt LA has interest in that trade
Tree
7:53
Do the fowler and cobb trades indicate the Angels are pretty much reached their budget.
Mark P
7:53
The Orioles and Cards are eating so much of the money owed to those players that the Angels should still have some room to spend further

What would it take for the Blue Jays to pry Castillo away from the Reds ???
Mark P
7:55
I strongly doubt the Reds are moving Castillo.  If they did, the Jays would have to give up a trade package like one of Bichette/Biggio and probably two of Austin Martin/Groshans/Pearson.

Toronto wouldn't make that trade either, but it gives you an idea of what Cincinnati's asking price would be

One thing driving me crazy all off season - do players who sat out 2020 season have that year cut from their overall contract or does it all just get pushed back by a year?
Mark P
7:57
The year comes off their contracts.  So David Price is still under contract through 2022, he didn't get a 2023 season added on to make up for opting out.
Brandon Marsh
7:57
Any mention of my name this week, or is it all about Adell?
Mark P
7:57
Almost an hour between Adell/Marsh mentions!
Stanley Spadowski
7:58
Any chance the Royals would listen to offers for Whit Merrifield? Cardinals have lacked a true leadoff hitter for years
Mark P
7:59
The Royals have steadfastly turned down Merrifield offers for the last couple of seasons.  I doubt they'd turn around and trade him now that KC looks to be trying to be competitive.
Division restructure
7:59
what do you think about doing away with east/central/west divisions entirely?  Have 15 teams in each league with a balanced schedule.  Top 3 teams make it in.  Next two teams have a one game wildcard play in.  I’d like a more balanced schedule to see play non-divisional teams more often.  Also wouldn’t have to worry about weak divisions crowning a playoff team that may not really deserve it
Mark P
8:00
I would also like to see more of a balanced schedule, but I doubt MLB does away with the division structure entirely due to tradition, rivalries, and ease of travel.

Is Oakland gonna look for a 2B too or are they content with Kemp?
Mark P
8:01
GM David Forst said earlier tonight that they're fine with the combo of Kemp, Machin, Pinder, and Neuse all competing for playing time
Ace
8:04
Why don’t more rich owners front load contracts to mediocre players to increase their trade value? With the way the market is wouldn’t this be a smart way to leverage your money?
Mark P
8:05
I mean, if you're looking for smart ways to leverage money, maybe don't pay the "mediocre players" in the first place?

But there's also a logic to backloading deals.  The team gets a player's better years up front for a lower price, and then they can potentially trade him elsewhere to get the pricier back-end years off the books.  Even if you have to eat some money on those last few years of a contract, the overall value might be worth it
Greg

Do you understand what the Cubs are doing this offseason?
Mark P
8:06
They're cutting payroll.  Simple as that.
Your Name
8:07
With all the money LA has invested into their payroll, and the amount that they’re over the luxury tax, is it a realistic possibility that Seager and/or Kershaw leave in free agency?
