Pretty decent for both, with the always-present caveat for Dahl that he has to stay healthy.  Calhoun too spent a good chunk of 2020 on the IL, and got barely 100 PA.

Have the Mets done enough to dethrone the Braves in the NL east? I have seen predictions the Braves will finish 4th in the division which I think is ridiculous.
Mark P
7:33
I'd be very surprised if Atlanta fell to fourth place, barring a lot of injuries or something.  Braves still have the fewest question marks of any team in that division, and I still think they're the best team in that division on paper.

Do you think more teams would blow past the luxury tax level if there was only monetary losses and not draft picks as well?
Mark P
7:34
Neither should matter.  The only draft penalty attached to the luxury tax is that your first pick drops 10 spots if you exceed the tax threshold by more than $40MM.  So if you're the Dodgers, you're going from probably the 29th or 30th pick to the 39th or 40th pick......big whoop.
If a team was dropping from the #1 overall pick to #11 I can understand some misgivings, but once you get past the very top of the draft, things become a crapshoot.
Marsh and Adell
7:36
They will not be traded and Angel fans will be happy next year, right?
Mark P
7:36
They won't be traded.  But, Angels fans probably still won't be happy since I don't think the team as presently constructed makes the playoffs.

I am a Michigan Sports fan...  Lions, Red Wings, Pistons and Tigers?   Do I keep rooting for these teams ... that are always rebuilding or move on?
Mark P
7:39
To be fair, the last 33 years have seen you celebrate four Stanley Cups, three NBA titles, and a few more close calls at even more championships.  A lot of fanbases have had it much worse off than Michigan fans, so don't despair even though all your teams are (for the moment) in dire straits

Hey Mark, Giants payroll is at $136M this year and next year $36M, their park is paid off and own a cash machine in China Basin with apts etc—we get it their rich—yet why not take on some debt this year? A Pujols, Hosmer, whomever is willing to give the best return in way of prospects?
Mark P
7:42
The Giants did do this to some extent last year in taking the last season of Zack Cozart's contract off the Angels' hands.  I would imagine a LOT of clubs have called the Giants pitching similar ideas, but it comes to the quality of prospects the other club is willing to add into the trade, and how much money the Giants are willing to just eat.

Will Albert and I ever play in playoffs together?
Mark P
7:42
Technically you already have, back in 2014

How will my time in MLB be remembered?
Mark P
7:46
Seven seasons of solid to very good numbers in the majors makes for a very fine career.  Tanaka has to be considered a big success.

Was not surprised to see Molina return to STL.  Was very surprised to see him get $9 mil.  Much as I love his fire and past contributions it is pretty clear he is in decline and STL could have added depth elsewhere and a cheaper catcher.  Was this a legacy contract or was that truly his market value?
Mark P
7:48
Probably a bit of a legacy element in that $9MM but maybe not all that much.

Do you think Colorado waits until the trade deadline to deal Story? Wouldn't they get a better haul for him before the season starts?
Mark P
7:49
It makes all the sense in the world for the Rockies to trade Story now, but they seem to be resisting (publicly, at least) the idea that they need to rebuild.

Thoughts on Chapman in 2021 and will the A’s be competitive. Thanks
Mark P
7:51
They'll definitely still be competitive, and are still the provisional favorites in the AL West since nobody else made any massive improvements.
7:52
As for Chapman, weird year at the plate for him, but it's too soon to say whether that's start of a trend or whether you can chalk it up to 2020's weirdness

Saying Andujar going down didn't help his development, is talking out of turn a bit, isn't it? Totally possible he was sent down to work on a specific thing and came back improved.
Mark P
7:53
He was sent up and down four different times.  I realize the Yankees didn't have a lot of room to play him, but you'd think a guy is purportedly one of their top young stars would get more than 65 PA.

Favorite quarantine tv show?
Mark P
7:57
Caught up on a couple of older shows I'd always been meaning to watch, like Fleabag and Big Mouth.

I'd also highly recommend a British comedy show called Taskmaster, which is part game show and part creative challenge

I'm curious, what type of package would it take for the Nats to trade for German Marquez? Would Robles, Mason Denaburg, Drew Mendoza and Austin Voth get it done? Thanks.
Mark P
7:59
I would think other teams would be able to top that trade package for Marquez, who is quietly one of the more valuable trade assets in baseball.  More details: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/the-rockies-top-trade-chip-in-a...
Porcello/Odey
8:00
These two guys still on the market....where do you see them ending up?
Mark P
8:02
Porcello is a total x-factor, there hasn't been much news on him at all this winter.  Since he won't get more than a one-year deal and won't cost all that much, he could be a fit in a lot of places.
While saying "probably the Jays or Mets" is an easy way to describe a lot of players in the 2020-21 offseason......I'll pick that option for Odorizzi
My Sharona
8:03
Why are the players union opposed to expanded playoffs? It would seem that the players could earn more bonus money this way?
Mark P
8:04
I don't think the players are entirely opposed to expanded playoffs, though a solid argument can be made that a wider playoff field can lessen the amount of free agent dollars spent since teams won't feel they need to be as good to get into the playoff field.

What the MLBPA didn't want, however, was expanded playoffs only for the tradeoff of the universal DH, since added playoff games are a much bigger cash cow than the DH

should the Royals be a .500 team this year, then contend in 2022?
Mark P
8:06
The Royals made some solid moves to improve themselves, but .500 might still be a bit of a stretch.  I can see .500 in 2022 and then contention if all goes well, younger guys continue to develop, etc.

So the Brewers just end up jacking up the bill on Turner, but who mans the hot corner in MKE?
Mark P
8:07
Milwaukee's pursuit of Turner was interesting, since I wonder if the Brewers were only willing to stretch the budget for Turner specifically, or if that money is available to David Stearns and company anyway and now they can go after someone else.
