A Urias/Robertson/Peterson revolving door could take place at 3B unless one of them solidifies the position or a platoon is created.  But that position certainly look like an area that can still be upgraded --- if not with Justin Turner, than with another more steady player

Sorry for the pause, some news from Ken Rosenthal.....the A's re-sign Yusmeiro Petit to a one-year deal

Would you rate the Indians' starting rotation in the top 10 in baseball? They'll be paid a total of under $3 million this year.
Mark P
8:13
Easily in the top 10, no doubt.

Kind of confused. Did JBJ really think he was getting 4 years? Also, where does he end up. His free agency has greatly confused me
Mark P
8:14
I'm not sure he necessarily expected four years, but it doesn't hurt to set a high asking price just in case one team jumps.

8:15
why do you think the off-season took so long to pick up?
Mark P
8:16
The "economic uncertainty" line wasn't just lip service, since I think a lot of front offices legitimately didn't know until deeper into the winter what their budgets would be.  But beyond that, we've also seen front offices willing to wait until later and later to make moves even in recent normal offseasons.

By the same reasoning as the Rockies trading Story now.. doesn't the same logic apply to the Indians trading Jose Ramirez before the start of the season? It makes fiscal as well as competitive sense for the 2022 season and beyond..no?
Mark P
8:18
Totally different cases.  Cleveland is still planning to contend and has a much better chance of doing so in 2021 and even beyond thanks to that rotation.  Plus, Ramirez is controllable through 2023 while Story is only controlled through 2021

On a scale of 1-5, 1 being bad and 5 being amazing - rate the Mariners next 10 year outlook. They have a loaded farm and financial flexibility.
Mark P

Let's say a 3.  Lots of youngsters will need to live up to the hype, but Seattle is looking like a team on the rise.

Mark, you are crushing the other MLBTR staff in the top 50 free agent contest with 14 correct so far, more than Connor Byrne (8) and Steve Adams (5) combined.  How often do you rub that in their faces?
Mark P

"Mark, did you publish this question just to brag about your performance?"

Yes.  Yes I did.

Random guess: Who do you have for 2021 comeback player of the year?
Mark P
8:22
I'm hoping it's Trey Mancini

Captain Kirk or Jean-Luc Picard?
Mark P

I grew up watching TNG so with all due respect to my fellow Canadian William Shatner, I pick Captain Picard

Any chance the New York Yankees send Andujar to Detroit for one of the top pitching prospects in the minor leagues not named Mize Skubal or Manning?
Mark P
8:25
There's a chance, but I'm not sure the Yankees have necessarily lowered their asking price on Andujar.

The Yankees' tactic seems to be that they don't **have** to trade Andujar or Frazier.  It helps to have lot of depth considering how injury-riddled the Yankees have been over the last two seasons.

How can the A's be "provisional favorites" when they did nothing but let talent walk away? I feel like people are undervaluing the losses of Hendricks, Semien, La Stella, ect.
Mark P
8:27
The A's took some big losses, no question.  But I also don't think the Angels got markedly better, and the Astros also lost a key piece in Springer.

Regarding Petit, why did it take him so long to sign? He’s put up great numbers and defied his “projected regression” from his peripherals 3 straight years
Mark P
8:29
Teams haven't been lining up for relievers in general this winter, especially not for 36-year-olds who don't have great peripherals.  Nobody wants to be the GM left holding the bag when Petit inevitably starts to decline, as solid as he has continued to be over the years

Hey dude - you guys had a story about a team seeking left handed hitting second basemen and mentioned the FA options are weak... any ideas about trade candidates who fit that profile?
Mark P

Adam Frazier immediately leaps to mind
8:34
well, Oakland can't stop signing relievers, so it's time to bring this chat to a halt.  Thanks for all the questions, back next weekend!
