Why so down on Red Sox? The pen is going to be one of the best, the offense is one of the best, and they have a deep rotation. I'm going to be the only one to call it now: Red Sox take the East!

I don't disagree that the Red Sox can surprise some people, considering just about everything possible went wrong for them last season.  But winning a very tough AL East seems like a tall order.

Ke-bryan has the real deal or just started hot for his first call up?
Mark P
10:54
He certainly has a good prospect pedigree, so his big start wasn't a surprise.  I hope Hayes keeps it up, Pittsburgh fans deserve a bit of hope.

There hasn’t been a work stoppage, since 1994, poor Expos, 27 years of labor peace in pretty good
Mark P

It has been pretty good, to the point that I kind of think both sides (especially the MLBPA) took it for granted.

Do you think the Giants could get a guy like Story next offseason even with all the departures (Posey, Belt, Crawford, their entire starting staff, etc.) they will need to address?
Mark P
10:58
The Giants will have enough payroll to work with that they can't be ruled out for any major free agent.  They'll definitely be in on Story and all the big shortstops as replacements for Crawford (who I suspect is entering his last year in SF)

Hypothetical, but in my prime, Free Agent age 24, today's prices, what is my contract? Don't insult me.

Over $500MM

Do you think the worst record should get the number one draft pick, or should they make it more win incentive for non playoff teams?
Mark P
11:03
I could get behind the idea of a lottery, or maybe the first pick should be given to the team with the best record that doesn't reach the playoffs.

That said, I'm not sure there's an easy answer here.  The first overall pick of an MLB draft can't instantly change a franchise overnight the way a top NFL or NBA pick can

Are people overrating the Rays? Seems like folks are underestimating how much it hurts to lose Morton and Snell.
Mark P
11:05
I think it's more people showing respect to the Rays for how they've stayed competitive despite losing so many top talents over the years.  But I agree, their pitching staff has a lot more question marks now than they did heading into last season.

What about the Garrett Cooper trade talk? Seemed pretty hot for about a second
Mark P
11:08
The Marlins reportedly got a lot of calls about Cooper once Adam Duvall was signed, and I don't doubt that is rather standing operating procedure --- if any team seems to get a surplus at a position, a bunch of other clubs swoop in to seek out trade possibilities

This strikes me as a topic Miami might revisit in the summer if they're looking to be deadline sellers.  For now, having both Cooper and Duvall seems to fall into "good problem to have" territory

I’m getting the sense that you think pretty low of the dbacks this upcoming season... is that a lack of bats or pitching?
Mark P
11:09
Probably moreso bats, but the bigger issue is that the Dodgers and Padres now both seem significantly better on paper, so Arizona is playing for a wild card slot at best
That's it for tonight's chat, thanks for all the questions!
