MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: April 5, 2017

Very different and it could be ugly. If guys like Richard and Cahill pitch well, they'll be traded. If they don't, they'll be released or in the 'pen. So that leaves Perdomo and four other guys. I think they'll use a couple spots on unproven guys like Jarred Cosart, Tyrell Jenkins and Zach Lee and give 1-2 rookies a chance. Sounds like Walker Lockett has impressed and Dinelson Lamet should also get a look.

Which of the Royals soon to be FAs will most likely be traded?
Jason Martinez
5:12
Cain and Hosmer will both have a ton of interest if the Royals fell out of contention. I think Cain will have more interest since he can play any OF spot. Not too many teams in desperate need for a 1B yet.

After Davidson and Asche flop, go to Delmonico or Danny Hayes?
Jason Martinez
5:13
Yeah, I would think so. Both deserving. I think they'll go with the hot hand whenever that might happen. Wouldn't surprise me if either is in one of my early "Knocking Down The Door" write-ups.

Does Street close again or is he short relief at this point?
Jason Martinez
5:14
Considering that Mike Scioscia refuses to name Cam Bedrosian his "closer" even though it's clear that no one else in that bullpen can be trusted, I'd say Street is likely to get the closer's job back when he's healthy.

Meant to add: your search box used to provide a link to a page of all rumors/news on a searched player. Now it's just all the individual articles, and they aren't sorted by descending date. So there's no easy way without reading every archived piece to see the *latest* on a searched player. Unless I'm missing something.
Jason Martinez
5:15
I'll ask Tim about that. I don't ever use the search box. I just add the player's name to the url ... mlbtraderumors.com/mike-trout

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY hasnt Detroit signed Pagan????????????
Jason Martinez
5:17
Even if they have interest, it doesn't hurt to give JaCoby Jones and Tyler Collins a couple weeks to see what they can do. If both struggle, then it's time to make a move. Pretty sure Pagan isn't interested in a MiLB deal or else he would've signed by now. He's waiting for a team that really needs OF help to give him a MLB deal.

Re. Street, that sucks considering I drafted Bedrosian for fantasy. Seems to profile as long term closer.
Jason Martinez
5:20
I think Cam gets the job back eventually. But I've gone from thinking that he could keep the job as long as he dominated like he did last year to thinking Scioscia is going to give Street his job back no matter what.

Will Adam Frazier claim a starting position by mid season? If so where?
Jason Martinez
5:22
Wouldn't surprise me. Hurdle seems to love him in the leadoff spot. Josh Harrison was an All-Star in 2014 and hasn't done much since. I think Frazier can take over at 2B if Harrison struggles. Even if he doesn't, a versatile guy like Frazier can still get 3-4 starts per week.

I think you said the other day that one of the moves the braves could and should make to be competitive for 2018 is trading for Machado..would a package of Swanson, Allard and Maitan be a starting point? or what package would you propose?
Jason Martinez
5:25
I really don't think they have enough right now and Dansby Swanson is pretty much untouchable. I think he is the guy they've identified as a "face of the franchise" for years to come. They have so much prospect depth, though, that the chances are good that a couple of them will take a step forward into the "elite prospect" category. That's what they'll need to land a guy like Machado. At least 2-3 elite prospects. Maitan and/or Albies, Acuna, and much more.

5:26
What do the Diamondbacks do with Archie Bradley? Back into the rotation or make him a late inning guy?
Jason Martinez
5:27
I don't have much faith in their bullpen, so I can see him getting a look as a late-inning bullpen guy before they give him another chance in the rotation. Probably makes the most sense, though, to send him to the minors so he continue to develop as a starter. At least for one more year before deciding he's better off in the bullpen.

When Arroyo is put on the 40 man on Saturday who will be designated?
Jason Martinez
5:29
I can see them DFA'ing Adleman or Lisalverto Bonilla. They could also move Brice or Ogando to the 60-Day DL.

Projection for Tyler Skaggs?
Projection for Garrett Richards (assuming he stays healthy)?
Jason Martinez
5:30
This was my Skaggs projection ... 10-9, 3.81 ERA, 134 IP, 3.7 BB/9, 7.8 K/9.
5:31
This was my Richards projection ... 12-8, 3.42 ERA, 156 IP, 3.7 BB/9, 8.0 K/9. If he has no effects from the elbow injury, though, he could be much better. He was on starting to look like an ace before the injury.

5:32
Do you think that the Jay's should extend pillar?
Jason Martinez
5:34
Sure. But from Pillar's perspective, his value could skyrocket with one good offensive season. Maybe he doesn't have it in him, but I'm guessing he'd bet on himself to have a 15-20 HR, 25 SB season. With the elite defense, that would put him a little bit closer to Kiermaier territory.
Mark
5:36
Thanks for responding to my frustrations with the site. As for the time of year, it seems like in the past when I was prepping for my fantasy drafts, MLBTR had lots of skinny on who might be a trade risk.
Jason Martinez
5:36
No problem. Always feel free to email mlbdepthcharts@gmail.com or tweet any suggestions @mlbdepthcharts and I can pass them along to the writing team. I'm always looking for story ideas, as well.

Who goes down when Dickerson comes of DL?
Jason Martinez
5:38
As long as they want to hold on to Torrens, Cordoba and SardiƱas (out of options), I think they'd go with a 5-man bench whenever Dickerson is healthy.
Big Lee
5:39
Time for Royals to have a fire sale? Two blowouts at the hands of the lowly Twins. . . .
Jason Martinez
5:40
Way too early. But that bullpen has to be a concern. Soria isn't what he used to be. Strahm is talented but could struggle as a rookie.
Jake
5:41
Odorizzi for Happ and Candelario at the deadline.. who says no?
Jason Martinez
5:41
Cubs say no. I think Happ is turning into a guy who could headline a deal for a pitcher with much more value than 3 years of Odorizzi.

5:42
If Holland excels at Coors, what kind of contract is he looking at next offseason?
Jason Martinez
5:42
As long as he pitches in 50 games or finishes 30 (he already has 2), his $15MM option will vest for 2018.
5:43
If he didn't have that option and had a similar season to his best days with the Royals, he'd probably be in line for something close to Melancon's deal.
NIcholas
5:45
If the Cubs decide to move someone for pitching at the trade deadline, who do you think it would be? Someone on the MLB roster? Or prospects only?
Jason Martinez
5:46
Depends on how big of a need they'd have. Assuming they want to add Jose Quintana, they'd have to part with Eloy Jimenez and/or Ian Happ. I really think they'll be fine, though. Can't see things being so bad unless Arrieta or Lester got hurt. Someone between Montgomery, Anderson and Eddie Butler should be good enough to hold down the No. 5 spot.
