MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: December 20, 2017

If an extension isn't worked out, Manny stays. Makes for an awkward situation and also puts their offseason on hold for a few days while they wait. With that said, the return would be way bigger if they offered the window. I really don't see Manny signing an extension, though. Hard to work out a $350-400MM extension in 48-72 hours or whatever the window might be. I'm sure he'll want to take his time and shop around next offseason.

Will the Padres or Giants give me a chance (maybe a minor league contract) on pitching or is my career done for good?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
An MiLB deal with the Padres makes a lot of sense. Probably his best opportunity to win a rotation spot. But I'm sure a lot of teams would be willing to offer a MiLB deal. He might want to stay closer to home in Alabama. Orioles and White Sox appear to be good landing spots.

Hanley Ramirez for Ian Kennedy.  Who hangs up?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:35
Interesting proposal, but I'm not sure it's a great fit on either side. Red Sox have 5 starting pitchers, not including Eduardo Rodriguez (expected back in early May), who can't be optioned to the minors. They need SP depth more than anything (guys who can pitch in AAA and be called upon when needed). I can probably see it if there was no expectation that David Price could give them 25+ starts. Not sure where they stand on that.
5:37
From KC's perspective, they already have some combination of Jorge Soler/Jorge Bonifiacio/Brandon Moss penciled in for the majority of DH at-bats. Not sure they believe Hanley can be the regular 1B.
Lucas Duda

Anyone? Bueller?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:37
Bad time to be a free agent 1B. Matt Adams was lucky to get $4MM as a bench player with the Nats.

Matt Moore was one of the worst SP's in baseball last season despite pitching in a pitcher's park.  Why does TEX think he'll be any good in their massive hitters' park?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:41
Most pitchers lack consistency on a year-to-year basis. Moore has had some good seasons and some bad ones. My guess is that will continue. Rangers are banking on 2018 being one of those good ones. He didn't cost them much, either. Similar to Andrew Cashner, who was worth the $10MM investment in '17.

Who bats cleanup now that Kemp gone?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:44
I have Tyler Flowers there now, which tells you that there's no real fit right now. Kemp was hurting them on defense and could look really bad at the plate, but he's a legitimate HR threat behind Freeman. A one-year deal with a 3B who could fill that role makes a lot of sense. Maybe Todd Frazier.

5:44
what sort of odds do you put for Conforto to be ready by opening day? I've read the injury is not likely to happen again
AvatarJason Martinez
5:45
The expectation is that he'll start the season on the DL, but could be ready by mid-April. No reason to rush him in spring training so he can play on Opening Day.
Jared Peterson
5:46
Colome and archer for Flaherty, Kelly, Hudson, Grichuk, and Bader? Who says no?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:48
I'm sure the Rays will try to pry Reyes away, but that's a pretty strong offer.
Michael fulmer
5:49
Am I wearing a new uniform come spring training?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:51
I'll say no in Spring Training. Yes on July 31st. Needs to re-establish value with a strong 1st half and then Tigers should shop him.

5:52
Is Julio Teheran a Brave on Opening Day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:53
Yes. They'd be selling low right now.

5:54
Do Mets have shot ar yelich or marlins catcher for darnaud and say Montero/ gsellman?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:55
Out of 29 teams that might have interest in Yelich/Realmuto, I'd say the Mets have the 29th best chance. Even if they had a good farm system (it's really bad), the Marlins probably don't want to trade their best players to a division rival.
Dan
5:57
is it worthwhile for the Giants to trade Heliot Ramos to Reds for Billy Hamilton?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:58
No. Ramos is their best prospect. Hamilton is really, really, really fast but he doesn't get on base enough to take advantage of his speed. He would cover a lot of space in CF, but I think they're better off with Duggar or trading a package of mid-level prospects (maybe led by Tyler Beede) for McCutchen.
Angel
5:59
Can you honestly think Manny Machado will get 300-to 350 millon on free agents ?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:59
Yep. 10 years at $30-35MM per season for his ages 26-35 seasons might even be low.
Huh
6:00
Who will the Cub's closer be next year?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:01
Sounds like Morrow is the guy. I thought they'd add another reliever who would also be in the mix, but Cishek was the guy they added and he isn't going to close.
Levi Ghulé
6:02
Odds Gleyber Torres starts at second for the Yankees to open the year?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:03
Unlikely. Could be his job for good by late April. I think they'll let Torreyes/Wade start the season there and give Gleyber a few weeks to get really comfortable at the plate and at 2B before he gets the call.
Twins Fan
6:04
Twins pretty much a lock to get Darvish, right?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:05
Nope. Still have a good shot, but the Cubs and Astros are involved now. They have $ to spend. Twins probably didn't want to get into a bidding war.
Spudchukar
6:08
I believe Christain Arroyo is better than you think. He slashed an impressive .396/.604/1.065 in AS A, and he is only 22.
AvatarJason Martinez
6:08
I think Arroyo can be a solid MLB regular. Maybe a
guy who can slash .280/.340/.450 with 20-25 HR with good defense at 3B or 2B. That's pretty good. You think he's better than that?
Steve steverson
6:08
Brian dozier for kolton Wong and Michael wacha. Good for both sides?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:09
Nope. Starting pitching is too valuable. And even if Dozier is an upgrade at 2B, that's 1 year of Dozier for 2 years of Wacha and 5 years of Wong.
James
6:10
Moose take a 1 year deal to play in KC again and the hit the market without t QO stuck on him?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:12
If he does take a 1-yr deal, I think he'll go to a better team than KC. Yankees or Cardinals would make a lot of sense.
Pls address this
6:12
Recent report out of Baltimore says Angelos could be talked into trading Machado to the Yanks. Thoughts on Adams/Montgomery/mid level prospect as a return?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:13
Not even close. Those guys would be at least the 3rd/4th pieces of that deal. A deal for Machado would need to be headlined by 2 elite prospects (Frazier, Torres, Florial, Sheffield), especially if it's with a division rival.
