MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: December 28, 2016

Jason Martinez
4:31
Spring Training is right around the corner and still plenty of Hot Stove to discuss!
Joe
4:32
Is there any remaining chance Jose Quintana goes to Pittsburgh?
Jason Martinez
4:33
Chances only improved when they re-signed Nova since it's now very likely they'd include Glasnow. I'm guessing a team like the Yankees can still outbid them, but they'd have to include Clint Frazier or Gleyber Torres.
Drew
4:34
What bat do you see the Phillies getting? They appear to be after one more veteran bat
Jason Martinez
4:34
Unless they really like Altherr, who wasn't very good after he returned from injury last season, I can see a one-year stop-gap like Brandon Moss or Colby Rasmus being a great fit in RF. Michael Saunders is also a fit but he might cost 2 years. Not sure they want to block Williams, Cozens, Quinn for longer than 2017.
Cory
4:36
Dozier to the dodgers is going to get done, right?
Jason Martinez
4:36
My guess is that the Twins got the Dodgers' best offer and are taking their time accepting just in case another team gives them a better offer. The other teams mentioned (Cardinals, Nationals) don't need a 2B as much as the Dodgers so it would be a surprise if he's traded anywhere else besides L.A.
Joe
4:38
What Will the Nationals do about their closer role?
Jason Martinez
4:39
I'm wondering if the price tag, as well as salary, for David Robertson is a bit too much. Blake Treinen might be a guy that can take the job and run with it. Shawn Kelley is a good backup plan. Maybe they just let those two battle it out and add another setup guy or two (Sergio Romo/Boone Logan/Neftali Feliz).
Daniel
4:41
Are the Rockies looking to add a first baseman or are they content with Desmond at first?
Jason Martinez
4:42
I think they're open to it if they know they can turn around and flip Charlie Blackmon in return for an elite talent or MLB ready starting pitcher with frontline potential. Don't think they gave Desmond all that $ to be a super-utility guy, although I think he can easily get 450-500 at-bats bouncing around 1B/SS/3B/CF/LF.
G Money
4:44
2 more months before catchers and pitchers report! Do you see Addison Russell hitting his way into the upper echelon of the young SS's this year? Can he be a Bogaerts lite?
Jason Martinez
4:44
Oh yeah. He more than held his own as a 22 year old and already has a World Series title under his belt. Should have all the confidence in the world and, more importantly, he knows his manager will stick with him if he slumps. I think he can hit for more power than Bogaerts. Just more K's and lower BA.
Josh
4:47
Do you see the Angels landing one of the many relievers still out there?
Jason Martinez
4:47
I think they have room for another late-inning guy. Bedrosian was starting to dominate before his injury and Andrew Bailey looked good late in the season, but should be major concerns with Street's ability to stay healthy and avoid a decline. Not sure they'd get one of the top guys (Feliz/Romo) but there are some decent arms available who can help in the 7th/8th.
Nathan
4:47
Who's playing CF for Oakland?
Jason Martinez
4:49
Guys like Peter Bourjos, Rajai Davis and Austin Jackson are still available and can probably be had for cheap. They do have some depth at SS/3B with Marcus Semien/Franklin Barreto and Ryon Healy/Matt Chapman. Would be nice if they can flip one of those for a young CF.
Roche
4:52
The Phillies have 9 MLB-ready starters if you count Mark Appel, and 3 potential closers. Any chance the Kentak will employ a 3-3-3 rotation like LaRussa in 1993? It would allow him to showcase all 9 starters as trade bait and see who is ready for 2018 and beyond
Jason Martinez
4:53
Don't think they have anything like that in the works. More important for them to allow the young guys to keep developing in AAA (and not accruing MLB service time). A lot of the guys are back-of-rotation types so expose them to MLB hitting before they're ready (see Jake Thompson/Eflin) and their value takes a hit.
Joe Jackson
4:57
Do you think all of the supposed interest in Brian Dozier is just smoke? Most of the teams they show as interested do not have a need at 2nd.
Jason Martinez
4:57
The Dodgers' interest is real, but I think the rumors linking the Cardinals and Nationals to him might be smoke. Anything to drive up the price. Hard to trade a 2B when not many teams have a need for a 2B.
Jon
4:58
Thoughts on Hunter Renfroe?
Jason Martinez
4:58
I think they'll give him 500-600 plate appearances and I think he'll hit 28-32 HR and strike out 175-200 times. But he'll have a full year under his belt and ready to make a name for himself in 2018.
Tim
4:59
Thanks for getting everyone excited about MLB!!!
Jason Martinez
5:01
Not difficult to get excited about baseball. Nearly 365 days of awesomeness between regular season, post-season and offseason.
john
5:03
does sean doolittle or liam hendriks have more trade value?
Jason Martinez
5:04
I think Doolittle (4 years left on team-friendly contract) has more value, but teams probably would want to see a bit more before they'd offer something of value for him. I think there's value for 3 years of Liam Hendriks. Only problem is that he hasn't really been given a chance as a late-inning/high-leverage guy. A's could really boost his value if they move him into that type of role in '17.

5:06
Long time watcher, first time question! Who are the best bets to round out the jays Bullpen for the upcoming season? FA? Fill within?
Jason Martinez
5:07
It's gone a bit under the radar because of their lineup holes, but the 'pen is also relatively thin. Grilli should have another good year left and Biagini was very good as a rookie. Those 2 should fill setup roles in front of Roberto Osuna. But it's hard to get excited about any one else after them. I can see them adding a Boone Logan and one more reliever.
Ian
5:11
How much trust should I put into AFL success. As a BoSox fan, i remember that's where Mookie broke out. Is Torres valued higher by the ChiSox becuase of the fall league?
Jason Martinez
5:11
For the most part, most players assigned to the AF are expected to reach the majors at some point. There are several very good hitting prospects facing upper minors relievers with big-time arms and 1 or 2 good pitches. Too small of a sample for value to change much, but I think a team can get an idea how close a prospect is to the majors.
Pete
5:12
What prospects are being thrown about by the Yankees? Frazier seems closer to being ready but Torres seems to have the higher ceiling.
Jason Martinez
5:12
If we're talking about a frontline pitcher with years of control (Quintana), then they'd have to include one of those guys. Both elite prospects. Torres is probably a year behind but I don't think it would matter to a rebuilding team like the White Sox.
Robert
5:14
Heard that STL is in talks with Twins about potential Dozier trade. Any chance Reyes would be involved? Or what type of package could we expect to see Twins get from STL?
Jason Martinez
5:16
I think the Cardinals are hesitant to part with Reyes for a guy with 3-4 years of control. Don't think there is any chance they'd give him up for 2 years for Dozier. In a Dozier-to-STL scenario, I'm assuming that they're ready to move on from Kolten Wong. Also not sure they'd trade Wong straight up for Dozier so the deal would have to be balanced out with more players involved. With all that said, seems like a bad fit. They already have the NL version of Dozier. Jedd Gyorko hit 23 HRs in the 2nd half.
Evan Gattis
5:18
Am I trade bait for the Astros or am I part of the 2017 plan?
Jason Martinez
5:19
I'm working on playing time projections this week so I can give you a pretty solid answer. As crowded as that lineup has become, I was still able to find 450 plate appearances for you between C and DH. I think the Astros are happy with you on the roster, assuming they're OK with your work behind the plate.
White Sox
5:20
Why would we want Glasgow? Shouldn't we be looking at packages centered around position bats?
Jason Martinez
5:22
The rebuild just started. Only thing that matters is collecting assets. They'll worry about how everyone fits on the roster in 2-3 years. If they did acquire Glasnow, though, they'd have 4 of the top pitching prospects in the game (Giolito, Lopez, Kopech) and the best position player prospect (Moncada).
Rollo Tomasi

With Dave Stewart long gone who is the worst GM in Baseball right now and why?
