MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: February 14, 2018

I think they'll sign a free agent (maybe Cashner or Jaime Garcia), trade for one (maybe someone like McHugh or Josh Tomlin) and leave one spot open so guys like Mike Wright, Ynoa, Castro, Cortes, Mesa can battle it out this spring.

Who's all part of my bullpen at the end of spring training?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:20
Soria, Minaya and Avilan are the locks. Infante and Farquhar have a decent shot since they're on the 40-man. And then they have some intriguing MiLB signees (Xavier Cedeño, Hector Santiago, Jeanmar Gomez, Bruce Rondon). I think they'll be patient with Nate Jones, although it sounds like he could be ready to go.

Thanks for the Chat Jason! Question: I hear everyday that the 'Nats are already over the Cap. Your site(Roster Resource) as well as every place else I have looked have them anywhere from $173MM-$182MM...... I understand in season flexibility, but $16MM or more under $197MM is not over the cap. Even Steve and Jeff mentioned they were already over the cap. Just wondering, I am trying to keep Jake off of the Nats(LOL).

Maybe they're thinking specifically of where they'd be with Arrieta. They could have slightly less or slightly more than $16MM of space beneath the $191MM, but I don't think Arrieta signs for less than $20MM per season.

Which one of Braves young pitchers makes the biggest contribution this year? Gohara, Soroka, Wright or Allard? Anybody besides Gohara get an MLB start?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:27
I think Gohara will get a chance to make 25+ starts. I have Soroka and Allard coming up for a handful of starts each, although Wright is probably in the same boat. Just harder to predict because he only has 17 IP of pro experience under his belt. If I had to guess, I think 1 of those 3 will make 10+ starts and be a big part of the 2nd half rotation.

If I am able to work a deal for jdm do you see my dbacks as a top 5 mlb team?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:29
More like Top 10. The question now is whether JDM actually wants to sign there now that they plan on using a humidor to store the balls. Looks like he had a lot of fun there last season pre-humidor.

Walker Buehler is where on opening day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
I can see him winning a bullpen spot if the Dodgers don't add another reliever to be their primary setup man over Pedro Baez. In all likelihood, he goes to AAA as a starter and Dodgers can decide on his role later in the season depending on their biggest need. If rotation is healthy, he could be their 8th inning setup man.

Do the Yanks really begin the season with Andujar and Torreyes starting in their infield?  Really??
AvatarJason Martinez
5:33
No way. I think they add a 2B or 3B and Ronald Torreyes/Tyler Wade/Danny Espinosa/Jace Peterson hold down the other spot until Gleyber Torres takes over sometime in late-April/early May.

Will Zunino make the All Star squad this year?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:36
I'd put Sanchez and Zunino as the favorites right now.

Remember Benny Agbayani?

Of course. Post-season star for the Mets in '00.

Better shot at landing Realmuto, Astros or Nationals?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:40
Astros. Astros have a much deeper farm system so they can put together a stronger trade package without including their top 2-3 prospects. Nats don't want to include Robles or Soto and their next tier of prospects isn't close to matching the Astros' 2nd tier of prospects.

Dave Cameron listed Hosmer as the biggest free agent landmine. How are the Padres viable for him still since he is now part of their FO?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:42
My assumption is that all front offices have varying opinions on players. It's up to Preller to make the final decision. I'm sure not everyone on his team is on board with every single move.

Does Arrieta accept 4/115 (no opt out or incentives)?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:44
I think he would. But does a team offer $28.75MM per season when Darvish only got $21MM? 4 years instead of 6 makes a huge difference, especially for a guy who is approaching mid-30's. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I don't know if he'll get more than $25MM per season.

Do the Mets actually need a starting pitcher?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:46
Current rotation depth ... Syndergaard, de Grom, Matz, Harvey, Wheeler, Gsellman, Lugo, Flexen. Too many injury concerns and don't know what to expect from the young guys. They could definitely use another guy who they can rely on for 25+ starts/150+ IP.

5:48
What is Hosmer waiting for if he truly has $150m offers in hand? Maybe he doesn't enjoy spring training?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:50
Padres don't really have a Plan B, so he probably knows that offer (I believe it's an est. 7 yr, $140MM offer) won't be pulled off the table. Royals might not be in a hurry either with so many other options (LoMo, Lind, Duda, Reynolds, Napoli).
5:51
He might as well wait a bit longer just in case some other team enters the picture. Injuries happen.

Odorizzi to the Angels. What makes that happen? I know that Cron has little trade value on his own, but could you see him included in a deal?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:54
If Cron is in the deal, he wouldn't be much more than a throw-in. Angels would likely have to give up 2 of their best prospects. Fortunately, they have done a good job of stockpiling prospects over the past year or two so they probably have what it takes.

Short leash for Forsythe? Move Taylor to second and really let their depth in the outfield create matchup nightmare for the rest of the NL?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:56
If Verdugo or Toles have a good spring and Forsythe doesn't, I believe that scenario would be in play. Forsythe is versatile so he can still be valuable off the bench.

Hasn’t Brentz earned a shot as the extra-bat-for-the-sox?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:57
The Red Sox seem to think so. He was re-added to the 40-man this offseason to keep him from becoming a free agent and he's out of options.

5:58
How about Moustakas to the White Sox? They could swoop in and solidify a LH power presence in the middle of that order as the young talent emerges. Say a 5 year deal for a lower AAV than Moose is currently looking for?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:00
If he wants a long-term deal, they appear to make the most sense. It would be a similar situation as Hosmer to SD. Not a contender in '18, but one of the best farm systems in baseball so a good chance that a majority of Moustakas' contract would be played on a playoff contender. Yankees on a 1-year deal makes a lot of sense for both sides.
Chance the AAA Starter
6:01
Will I make the Yankee rotation at some point this year?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:04
If the Yankees add another starter, Chance will be 7th or 8th on the depth chart. Only 3 teams used less than 8 starting pitchers in '17. Yankees used 11. https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-rotation-depth-tracker/
Very good chance that Chance gets his shot in '18.

Jason could you see the O’s grabbing Mustakas on a 1 year deal and using Beckham as a super Utlity guy
AvatarJason Martinez
6:05
Not really. Even if that was an option, it would be about 5th on their priority list behind SP, SP, OF, SP.
