MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: January 11, 2017

Easier said than done, but that does make some sense for both teams. Cutch in LF or RF, Harrison at 2B for Dodgers. One of them would lead off. Not sure if Frazier is a great fit for the Pirates unless they traded Josh Bell for Quintana to open 1B or unless Jung Ho Kang's legal problems are going to keep him out of action.

Who will be the Cards 4th OF? Pham is not the answer.
Jason Martinez
5:15
Pham had a .764 OPS, 9 HR in 183 plate appearances. Plays all 3 OF spots. Sounds like a pretty good 4th OF to me. Peter Bourjos and Gregor Blanco are free agents. Also pretty good 4th OF types.

Any chance the Dodgers will give me a good young CF for Kinsler? Cuz right now my CF is a complete CF.
Jason Martinez
5:18
Not one that will be your starting CF in 2017. Alex Verdugo is a good prospect, but not ready for the majors. If Trayce Thompson was able to stay healthy last season and continued to mash (he hit 13 HR in 262 plate appearances), he would be a very interesting option. But, of course, the Dodgers probably wouldn't want to trade him if that was the case.

Why are the ANGELS JUST SITTING WHILE THE REST OF THE DIVISION IS GETTING BETTER?
Jason Martinez
5:19
I think they have another big move left (maybe Jason Hammel). But like other teams, they're waiting for prices to drop.

5:20
Is Wieters a worthy upgrade over Carlos Perez if they Angels are putting the emphasis on pitch framing this offseason?
Jason Martinez
5:20
I don't even think Perez is the starter. Martin Maldonado was the defensive upgrade acquired to be the regular guy. Wieters would be a major upgrade over both of them, though.

Cubs send Montero + $7MM in a bag to Colorado, Anaheim, or (less likely) Nationals for a B level prospect...... Please say you feel this is going to happen too! After Montero spoke out on him being blindsided by Maddon... I see no way they open camp together.... Your thoughts?
Jason Martinez
5:26
Not sure they want to put that much of a workload on Willson Contreras in his 1st season. It's a good situation for everyone and Montero knows Contreras and the pitching staff well. He has a WS ring. He'll get paid a ton of money to catch 50-60 games. I'm sure he's over it.

Tigers have been pretty much dormant this odd season. Can we expect a long summer ahead?
Jason Martinez
5:29
Maxed out payroll and not a lot on the farm. They can be really good, though, if Zimmermann bounces back, Verlander continues to pitch well and the bullpen holds up. But yes, it will be a long summer if those things don't happen. This could be the end of their window. Need to start rebuild if they don't make the playoffs.

Predictions on the padres possible starting pitcher free agent signings?
Jason Martinez
5:31
I'm sticking with my Jake Peavy prediction, but there are so many options. Colby Lewis, Doug Fister, Jorge De La Rosa, Brett Anderson, Scott Feldman all make sense to some extent.

This is the slowest offseason since _______?
Jason Martinez
5:33
... I launched MLBDepthCharts in February 2009. I couldn't tell you how slow an offseason was before that. Different time. No social media.

Is Vogelbach the Mariners open day 1B? Does it make sense to look at Napoli and Trumbo with their price dropping? Allowing Vogelbach to be backup and Valencia as 4th OF.
Jason Martinez
5:36
I think Vogelbach is going to get his chance to play regularly vs RHP. The Mariners' top half of the order is so good that they can afford to break in 2 youngsters (Haniger, Vogelbach) at the bottom of the order. If Vogelbach struggles, Valencia will just play more often. He deserves it. .822 OPS over his last 895 plate appearances.

5:38
Odor to the outfield makes great sense(at least against righties) but won't happen. Odds of the Rangers signing Moss?
Jason Martinez
5:38
Moss would be a good fit. I have Joey Gallo penciled into the DH spot (vs RHP) right now but the Rangers supposedly want him to continue developing in the minors.

5:41
Do you think the Orioles' window is closing?
Jason Martinez
5:41
It wasn't much of a window, considering how bad their starting pitching has been. They've made the playoffs despite their rotation. The development of Bundy/Gausman could help, but there really isn't much help on the way. Of course, the Yankees rotation isn't very deep and the Blue Jays have some holes in their lineup and bullpen. So I think they can still compete for a playoff spot if the rotation can be adequate.

5:43
Where does Peraza play eventually once the Reds have room on the big league roster?
Jason Martinez
5:44
I think he'll get semi-regular playing time in '17 at 2B, SS, LF, CF and gets regular playing time if Cozart of Phillips are traded. Regardless, Cozart and Phillps are both free agents after the season so he'll be a regular in '18. My guess is that Dilson Herrera or Brandon Dixon are the frontrunners for 2B and Peraza will be the everyday SS.
Steven
5:45
Does Aybar make sense as the Padres SS? They don't have anyone currently on the roster who can play it.
Jason Martinez
5:46
I can't see anything stopping it unless the Padres just really like Luis Sardinas and want to give him regular playing time.

5:50
Is there a possibility the Dodgers add a top starting pitcher during the offseason or halfway through?
Jason Martinez
5:50
They already re-signed Rich Hill. Julio Urias is stud. DeLeon, if he's not traded, looks like he's going to be a stud. Ryu and McCarthy could still help out if they can get healthy/stay healthy. Doesn't mean they won't be looking for starting pitching in July. Pitching depth can disappear quickly. Dodgers have witnessed it often.
Sam
5:52
could A's be a fit for Jay Bruce with their bullpen surplus and desire for a slugger?
Jason Martinez
5:52
I think they have a rare bullpen surplus, but that might be more valuable at the trade deadline after teams have lost several pitchers to injury. Plus, they already have Matt Joyce and Khris Davis in the corners. Not sure it's something they'd consider at this point.
Tom
5:54
What do you expect from Michael Fulmer this year?
Jason Martinez
5:54
I expect some regression, but he's the real deal. Hard for a rookie to hold up for close to a full season and not really hit a rough patch.
Pin Stripes
5:56
Does anyone from the Sterois era ever make the HOF...Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, mccguire?
Jason Martinez
5:56
Clemens and Bonds have gained steam. They should be in by 2019, if not next year.
Kaba Report
5:57
What do you think of the prospects the braves got?
Jason Martinez
5:58
They've added so many pitching prospects in the last 2 years! A lot of upside, but none expected to make much of an impact in 2017. Maybe Weigel and/or Newcomb if they take a step forward.
Wockenfuss_14
5:59
Still possible for a Tigers-Dodgers blockbuster trade featuring J.D. Martinez and Ian Kinsler?
Jason Martinez
5:59
Makes as much sense as a McCutchen/Harrison trade. Fills two major needs for Dodgers. Just not sure if Tigers are quite ready to get started on that rebuild.
Jackson
6:01
Why are the Mariners being so underrated for the upcoming season? If 2015 they were the early World Series team, and this years team is 100 times better why is it being picked for 3rd place by so many???
