Jason Martinez

I have plenty of experience in this area. If she doesn't have a hobby that she loves as much as you love baseball, she probably won't understand.
Rick Hahn
5:11
Got Timmy done. Who will I lock-up long term next?
Jason Martinez
5:11
Rodon is probably the only other guy I'd consider at this point.
Rich
5:12
Will renfro make the Padres opening day roster?
Jason Martinez
5:13
I think so. Had a pretty good chance before Dickerson's injury and Margot's also missed time due to injury. Ideally, he's spend a few more weeks in the minors so he can push his free agency back another season.
Jeff
5:14
Brandon drury the 2nd baseman on opening day
Jason Martinez
5:15
Unless he's been really bad defensively—and I haven't heard that he has been—I think he's a lock.
Wyatt
5:16
How do you feel about the rangers rotation? Would u go get another arm?
Jason Martinez
5:17
I would because I don't trust that both Ross and Cashner will stay healthy once they return. And if Cashner stays healthy, I don't trust that he'll pitch well. I think they'll at least give guys like Griffin, Gee and Hauschild a look early in the season and before they intensify their search for help.
Corey
5:17
Will Snell make the Rays rotation?
Jason Martinez
5:19
Yes. After Archer-Odorizzi-Cobb, I think he went into spring with an edge over the rest of the pack. His spring numbers haven't been great, but I think it was his job to lose and I don't think he's done enough to lose it.
Bill
5:20
Who do you think will make the Phillies roster, Chris Coghlan or Daniel Nava?
Jason Martinez
5:21
I think Coghlan's versatility gives him an edge. Nava is out-hitting him this spring, but won't mean as much since they both have long track records.
NatsNorth
5:23
Who do you think rounds out the Nats pen after Kelley, Treinen, Solis, Blanton, Glover and (Romero?) ?
Jason Martinez
5:24
Oliver Perez is under contract. He'll be in there with those guys you mentioned. Romero is out of options and throws upper 90's so he'll be in there. Probably too erratic to throw him into high-leverage situations right away, but they can afford to keep him out of that role early in the season.

Seems that people in PR are super excited about the WBC. Great to see. Especially because it's either this or spring training
Jason Martinez
5:26
It's what happens when you play meaningful games. MLB season is long, so this kind of emotion (fans and players) doesn't kick in until late in the season and only if your team is still in the playoff race. As a Padres fan who hasn't watched them play a meaningful game since 2010, I can really appreciate what's happening.
Chris
5:29
How long until managers / front offices realize that "saves" mean almost nothing?
Jason Martinez
5:30
Never because they do mean a lot. Getting those last 3 outs of the game is difficult. That's why Jansen, Chapman and Melancon got paid so much $ and it's why the Cubs traded so much for Chapman. Kind of like kicking a 40-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter of a football game is much easier than kicking a 40-yard field goal to tie or win the game with the time expiring.
5:32
I do think guys like Betances (holds, saves, durable, multi-innings) are being undervalued by the arbitration system. But I don't think managers and GMs over-value closers.
Will
5:34
Will Carson fuller for sure get called up this year? I would like to see him in triple A this whole year
Jason Martinez
5:34
Most likely. 4 of their 5 starting pitchers will be on the trade block so I can see all Lopez, Giolito and Fulmer making MLB starts. Which pitcher gets the 1st call-up is the bigger question.
Greg
5:36
Who's making the Yanks rotation?
Jason Martinez
5:37
I've had Severino and Green penciled in to the last 2 spots, but I'm starting to lean towards Mitchell so they can send Severino to AAA. I think Severino needs some more development before they call him up for good. I think Mitchell can be a valuable bullpen piece, but they should be OK without him.
Dylan
5:38
I read on Gaslamp Ball that if the Rangers offered Profar for Perdomo of the Padres, the Padres would say no.
Jason Martinez
5:39
Because 5 years of Perdomo (6 years if he spends a few more weeks in the minors) vs 3 years of Profar. By the time the Padres are competitive, Profar would probably be a year from Free Agency. I'd probably still do it, because Profar could become a valuable trade chip if he can stay healthy. I can see something getting done involving more players.
Ryan
5:40
Roster move would have to be made if Yankees took wade for ss. Who do you see them cutting in that scenario?
Jason Martinez
5:42
Good question. They might have to open 2 spots if a guy like Frieri works his way onto the roster. They don't have any obvious DFA's, but guys like Barbato and Shreve are buried on the depth chart. Don't know if they'd have to DFA either. I think they could trade one or both. Same with a guy like Refsnyder or Mason Williams.
Jackson
5:44
Do the Mariners have what it takes to get Quintana if he's still available and the M's are still in it?
Jason Martinez
5:44
Nope. Need a guy like Glasnow, Meadows, Martes to headline the trade package. Those guys are Top 10-20-ish prospects in baseball (at least) and I believe the White Sox are asking for 2 of those types of guys. I don't think Kyle Lewis or Tyler O'Neill would be anywhere near enough to get the conversation started.
Chris
5:46
Why are the Rockies one of the worst teams on the road, both in terms of hitting and pitching? Getting away from Coors makes the hitters look terrible, but doesn't make the pitchers pitch much better.
Jason Martinez
5:47
My theory is that it's difficult to maintain the necessary level of consistency when you're playing half of your games in such a different environment. Hard enough to make adjustments to talented MLB hitters/pitchers.
Mat
5:48
Where is Conforto to begin the season
Jason Martinez
5:48
Sounds like they want him to play everyday so I'd expect him to be in AAA, barring an injury to Bruce or Granderson.
Ken
5:52
Does Cheslor Cuthbert have a spot in Kansas City
Jason Martinez
5:52
I think so. Only question, I believe, is whether he plays regularly at 2B or gets most of his at-bats vs LHP while filling in occasionally at 3B, 2B, DH.

When will the Phillies make a bold move. Signing guys to one-year deals and waiting on prospects won't get it done.
Jason Martinez
5:53
The plan is for that to happen next offseason. They should be players for some of the biggest names available. They're not quite there yet, which is why they sign guys like Kendrick and Saunders as stop-gaps.
Os

Does one of our Rule 5s stick?
Jason Martinez
5:55
I think they can stash Santander on the DL for a bit. Don't see a fit otherwise.
