MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: November 15, 2017
powered byJotCast
Jason Martinez
4:32
Welcome. Don't think there's been one roster move since last chat. Fortunately, it won't last much longer. The deadline to add players to the 40-man roster is on Monday. Approximately 100 players will be added and many others will be removed. Then some of those will be claimed off waivers/traded and so on and so on. This is the calm before the storm.
4:33
To see which players are eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 draft if not added to the 40-man roster, 40-man roster space, etc., you can always check out our depth charts at Roster Resource .... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-depth-charts/

Matt Carpenter recently told he will be a super utility player, thoughts?
Jason Martinez
4:35
Pretty sure he'll say "whatever is best for the team" whether he's comfortable with it or not. He'd still play everyday at either 1B, 2B or 3B, same as in '17, but more balanced between the 3 spots. He had 16 starts at 3B and 13 starts at 2B.

Grichuk for Colombe.  What needs to be added to make this happen?
Jason Martinez
4:38
Cards would have to add more to the pot. Probably one of their top 10 prospects (not Top 5, though). I like the match. Rays could use another RHH OF.

4:38
You think the Yankees will trade for Stanton
Jason Martinez
4:39
I don't think so. Of all the teams with a realistic chance, I think the Yankees would have an OF lowest on their priority list.
They have the $ and prospects. Sounds like Cashman really wants to avoid adding too many more massive contracts, though.
Alax Cobb
4:40
Am I pitching for the Cubs next year?
Jason Martinez
4:41
Very early in the process, but sounds like that's a strong possibility. Cubs are likely to add 2 starting pitchers. Cobb would fit nicely behind Quintana, Lester, Hendricks.
Ronald
4:42
Melky Cabrera and Miguel Gonzalez white sox reunions?
Jason Martinez
4:44
Wouldn't surprise me at all. The FA market has a lot of corner OFs and a lot of starting pitchers looking to bounce back so options could be limited for both. Gonzalez wasn't horrible in '17, but he was better in '16 and also finished poorly after trade to Texas.

Schwarber for Chance Adams and Betances.
Jason Martinez
4:48
I think Chance Adams' value has diminished a bit because the Yankees bypassed him a few times in '17 for guys that aren't very good. And he's dominated in the upper minors. At worst, I figured MLB-ready No. 4/5 starter. But apparently still needs work. And Betances' value also down a bit after late-season control struggles. I think they'd have to add a bit more to get Schwarber. Plus, I'm not sure adding a guy like Schwarber is a priority. They have good MLB-ready hitters without anywhere to play.

Giants have any interest in a guy like Chatwood/Tillman?
Jason Martinez
4:50
I think they'll be one of the few teams with little interest in adding a SP on MLB deal. Stratton looked really good late in the season. Blach can be a decent No. 5. And Beede, Suarez, Coonrod are all pretty close to helping out.

Why would the Padres be interested in Hosmer?
Jason Martinez
4:54
I'm guessing it's just due diligence. But the thinking is likely ... "would we go after this guy when we are ready to compete next offseason? He won't be available next offseason, so let's get him now while we can." Maybe backload the deal a bit. Maybe sell him on the team's young talent. If he's getting a 6-year deal, for example, Hosmer would only be signing on for one year of the rebuild and hoping to be on a very good team for the remainder of his contract.

Can I move Kemp or nick m. contract?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Markakis can be moved. Teams are good with 1 yr, $11MM for a corner OF who can still play. I think they'll have to eat some $ to move Kemp, but I think there's a chance he can go to an AL team. Might need to wait things out, though. A team could be more desperate in January or February if they didn't address needs in December.

I know that the Angels are looking for offense this offseason, but I feel like they could also focus a bit more on pitching. Do you think that they might be in the market for an above average SP or RP/CL?
Jason Martinez
5:01
I think it should be a priority. Probably seems like it's not since they have more obvious position player needs than other teams and they'll be connected with every 2B and 3B. And, apparently, 1B. But some of their best SPs are injury risks or still working back to full strength from major injuries ... Richards,  JC Ramirez (elbow), Skaggs, Heaney. I think they need depth more than anything. It will be interesting to see which SP they sign. Probably can't gamble on a bounce-back candidate.

Think phillies will trade joseph
Jason Martinez
5:03
I think they'll try, but I doubt there's much of a market. He does have options remaining so the Phillies don't have to give him away for nothing. They currently have 2 40-man spots open, though, so they might need his spot. It really depends on how many players they're going to add to the 40-man by Monday.

Do you have contacts in the industry or are you guessing like the rest of us?
Jason Martinez
5:09
I do, but not anyone I'd ask about free agency/trades. Everybody is guessing at this point. If you work in a front office, you probably have a better sense of the market but you're still guessing. It's just a more educated guess. I've been doing this (roster tracking, working in industry) everyday since February 2009 without ever losing track of everything that is happening around the game and I wasn't much different prior to that. So I should be able to provide some pretty good insight, I hope.

5:10
markakis and Lucas Simms to the Orioles for Darren oday?
Jason Martinez
5:10
Maybe. It fills needs on both sides. But I think the Braves will exhaust every opportunity to trade Kemp before they go down that road.
David
5:11
Do you think the mets will/would trade for manny machado?
Jason Martinez
5:12
No chance. I'm guessing that they end up in the 27-30 range in the farm system rankings for BA/BP/Keith Law. If O's put Manny on the block in July, it's still going to take a really strong package of prospects. Mets don't have it.

Hi Jason! I am huge Red Sox fan and they had a pretty decent year except in the power department. Now that we are inching closer to the Winter meetings, Who do you feel the Sox bring in for a power bat ?
Jason Martinez
5:15
I don't think they're going to mess around. They'll get a legit middle-of-the-order bat ...  My guess is JDM or Stanton. Plan B would likely be Carlos Santana.

Am I coming back this year?!
Jason Martinez
5:16
Yes. Not sure of the exact date but I know it will be ready to go soon.
Adam
5:17
Will the A's sign a new CF or do you think they stick with Boog?
Jason Martinez
5:19
Boog deserves a shot and Dustin Fowler is also in the mix. I think they'll stand pat unless a guy like Carlos Gomez can be had for cheap. The thinking would be that they could flip him in July for a prospect(s) and then Boog or Fowler would take over.

Just tell me there’s a 0.1% chance the Rockies trade for stanton and I’ll be happy
Jason Martinez
5:22
Still my darkhorse pick so hopefully more than 0.1% chance. Their farm system is good and only Ian Desmond on the payroll past 2019.

How serious are the Blue Jays on Cain. There is not much sense of moving Pillar out of CF.
