Where does Garrett Richards end up and for how long/much?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:27
Padres should give him the Pineda/Smyly contract (2 yr, $10MM). He'd be at full health entering 2020 (Padres expect to be playoff contenders) and he'd get to rehab in San Diego in 2019.
5:30
R.I.P. Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. MVP for the Giants in 1969. 521 career HRs. He was also the Padres' 1B when I was born.
Hello
5:30
I have asked insightful good questions and you haven’t answered any of them??
AvatarJason Martinez

Ask me here ... https://twitter.com/mlbdepthcharts  ... and I promise I'll answer within 24 hours. I'm just quickly browsing thru a lot of questions during the chat and don't see them all.

Does Tatis come up in 2019 or does SD play the push back the clock game?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:34
Really depends on how he's doing and how the team is doing. With Vlad Jr., they were patient but I don't think they would've left him in the minors had they been in the playoff race in July. Tatis has to force his way up in '19 and it probably won't matter how good he's playing if the Padres aren't anywhere near a Wild Card spot.

Do the Metsies make any kind of splash?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:37
Not like a Machado or Harper splash, but I think they'll be active. New GM will want to put his mark on this team. So if they are good, people won't be able to say he did it with Alderson's team. He'll need to rebuild the 'pen and maybe add a bat.

Why does everyone think the Giants don’t have the money for Harper.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:40
Because they've had so much $$$ tied up in veteran players over the last few years so whether they can afford another big salary has been a question the last 2-3 years. They still have more $$$ on the books than most teams thru '21, I believe. And if Harper or Machado want an opt-out after 2-3 years, they won't be able to backload the deal.

If Mike Trout were a FA right now, how much do you think he would make this offseason?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
I'd guess 12 yr, $500MM with an opt out after 4-5 years. That would cover his ages 27-38 seasons.

Scooter Gennett for Sonny Gray and Michael King.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:46
Hmmm. Not bad. King's stock has risen so much, though. Yankees might not want to deal him for 1 year of Gennett. But if they think of him as more of mid-rotation guy, even after his breakout season, maybe they'd be willing to do that sort of deal. Gray to the Reds makes a lot of sense.

Leclerc to BOS for Michael Chavis?  Kimbrel possibly gone, TEX could use a true 3B'man (Gallo better in COF) and Profar's prob trade bait for pitching this offseason.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:50
I also like this deal. However, Leclerc is pretty much all the Rangers have in that bullpen and he was THE best reliever in baseball over the last month of the regular season. Rangers would be selling high and could probably even get another prospect in that deal. But they'd pretty much be admitting that they're going nowhere in '19. That wouldn't be a big surprise. They have no pitching at all.

How much you think Ill get and where am I going?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:53
I would've said 2 yr, $22-28MM before the post-season. Now I'd guess 4 yr,$60-70MM.
5:54
Red Sox and Yankees would be the leading candidates to sign him, I'd guess.

How good will Eloy be as a rookie?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:57
Assuming he stays healthy and debuts no later than May 1st, I'd think he's something like .270/.335/.500 with 20+ HR, 30+ 2B, 75+ RBI.

Does Urena of the Marlins get traded this winter? Seems to me he could be a darkhorse acquisition for a contender.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:59
Sure, it's possible. Teams were paying attention to how he finished the season (6-0, 1.80 ERA, 45 IP, 27 H over last 7 starts), but Marlins will set the asking price high.

Will the Reds play Senzel in center?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:04
Doubtful. If they really wanted to get his bat in the lineup and remove Billy Hamilton, they'd probably just move Schebler to CF, Scooter Gennett could play LF and Senzel can have the 2B job for good. Not sure how ugly that OF would be, though.
Senzel's best shot for a starting job in the Majors early in '19 is if the Reds trade Scooter this offseason.

Do I have a chance at J.T. realmuto?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:05
One of the best chances. McCann's $15MM club option was declined. Farm system is stacked.
Lee
6:07
Clint Frazier for Danny Salazar, who hangs up first?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:10
I wouldn't give up 5 years of Frazier for 2 years of Salazar when he missed all of '18. His trade value would rise significantly next offseason if he can make 20+ starts in '18. Not sure Indians would sell low on him now.
Justin
6:11
Is Cody Allen a bounceback candidate?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:12
He is, but I wouldn't bet money on it. He's averaged over 70 appearances over the last 6 seasons and is entering his age 30 season.
AJ Preller
6:14
Which young controllable front end starter should I give up premium prospects for?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:15
Syndergaard. Not sure I'd add anyone else to that list.
6:19
Not too many teams that would be willing to trade away a No. 1 starter. Braves have enough SP depth that they can trade away Folty, Teheran, Newcomb or Gausman. Either would be SD's ace.   Blue Jays could be willing to trade Stroman or Sanchez, but both have only 2 years of club control.

If JTR is available, how do you rank catchers who'll be with new teams in '19? JTR; Grandal; Ramos?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:21
Pretty much. Those are the top 3 guys who are likely to change teams. 2nd tier guys include Maldonado, Wieters, Lucroy, McCann.

In Super Two article Lindgren was stated as being right at the line, however, it looked like he wasn't up enough in 2016 to get that many days. He wasn't optioned between major league stints and that equaled 134 days in total, so why didn't that option count. It appeared there may have been something with a DL stint, but sources didn't agree and I wasn't sure if he was sent down as injured what that affected.
AvatarJason Martinez
6:24
It's a moot point since he was outrighted off the 40-man roster. He is officially at 2.134 service days so he'd be a Super 2. He's been on the DL for most of that so he qualifies for a 4th option if he ever uses up his 3.
