MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

ATX Halo

Can Halos collect some decent prospects if they are sellers at deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
They sure could, but I don't think they'll be forced to do that.
Sean
3:22
Mets seem to have the problem of de aza hitting almost everything in spring training and nowhere to play him, what's the solution?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
There really isn't one. You're not giving him time against righties ahead of Conforto or Granderson, unless one of them really struggles. So, you either put him on the roster as last man off the bench and call it depth, or you keep trying to work out a trade.
Michael
3:23
Can a platoon of Matt Holliday and Brandon Moss/Matt Adams work for the Cardinals?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Sure. I mean, out of those three you have to figure you're going to get production, even if one falters. It'll be interesting to see how often Holliday and Moss are in the outfield, too. It could work out.

I heard on MLB network that Morneau had surgery and won't swing a bat until May.
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Hadn't seen that, will have to track it down and check it out.
Dan
3:25
Reds picking up Simon, Good? Bad? Indifferent?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
I mean, it's a very sensible move. You hate to have to push young guys at the MLB level, and now there's at least an innings eater on hand to reduce the burden. And no obligations, really.
Jerry
3:26
Hi,Jeff do you see the Marlins contending with the Mets or Nationals this year
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
I don't, but not outside the realm of possibility. Losing Capps really hurts, though, especially with Ramos slowed this spring and having his own questions. That injury really sucks.
I'm just waiting for Barry Bonds to come back, though. How amazing would that be to watch?

3:28
I know spring training doesn't mean a whole lot, but Buck has to be pretty worried about what the Orioles are trotting out to the mound to start the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
It was a worry before camp opened, so yeah, I would be.

I started reading MLBTR this offseason and I love it, especially the chats. Anyway, I have two questions: 1) What is written about during the season? 2) Will this week's mailbag be published? Thank you.
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Welcome! 1) there are lots of moves all season long, and of course the trade deadline is another major marker with plenty of ramp-up just like the winter's market; 2) I think it was, late Monday night.
Michael
3:29
Could the Cardinals trade for Nick Ahmed?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Guess I'd still be a little surprised if Arizona thinned the ranks there. They have said they like Ahmed, and Segura is no sure thing. So, what are they getting back that makes this a sensible move for the team? And what is STL really going to give up for a guy who hasn't shown a consistent MLB bat?

I heard rumors over the winter that the Mariners were thinking of moving Cano to first soonish but not seeing any signs of it so far. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Can't see why they would unless/until there's conclusive evidence that he's a big problem at second. And it isn't as if they don't have options at first.
Michael
3:31
Did you play baseball as a kid?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
Always. Still do, in fact.

You really think Holaday won't bring back even a minor-leaguer-who-could-someday-make-the-majors? (you know, one of the MLWCSMTM)??? as bad as catching is, I'm a little surprised.
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
A pure roll of the dice on some young guy with a few tools? Sure, maybe.
Nick
3:32
Think Buxton will be good this year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
I don't have a specific opinion on him, but there is a tendency I think to focus too much on what guys did in a short sample in their first MLB action. Everyone says he has the tools, and he's produced in the upper minors, so I'm about as bullish on him (from my non-scouting vantage point) as any other guy with that level of talent.

Is Trevor Story the real deal or this another "It's just spring training" scenario.
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
He was already considered an interesting but not great prospect, and I guess you can get a little more excited by a nice spring, but I don't think the Rockies will be printing any banners with him on it just yet.
Jeff
3:34
Do you see any takers of Ricky Nolasco? Could the Twins get anything other than salary relief?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
No, I don't think they can. And it's doubtful to me they'd get enough salary relief to make a deal worthwhile at this point. Better to have the depth on hand and hope he shows better.
Adam LaRoche
3:36
What's wrong with spending the whole chat talking about me? Do you hate me?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Actually I like ALR quite a bit. I will just say this, since people keep asking: 1) if the team made him a promise - verbal or otherwise - then not cool; 2) I'm not going to judge the man's child-rearing decisions, or his decision on his own priorities (even if the team was in the right)
Sandy Alderson
3:37
Who would be a better keep in the long run for me? Wheeler or Matz?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Neither makes sense as an extension candidate right now, for me. Want to see a full season of work first.
Nick
3:38
Has the ship sailed on converting Chapman to a starting pitcher role? If I'm Cashman, given how little I paid for him (in talent and even salary) I'd be tempted to turn him into what could be one of the most valuable players in the league. Am I stupid to think this way?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
It's not stupid to think about it, but it's not happening, in large part b/c Chapman has not expressed any interest.
Doug
3:39
How encouraged should the Angels be by Daniel Nava's strong spring? I know stats don't matter in the spring, but his health?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Well, yeah, let's be clear: spring action matters, it's just that you can't solely look at stats. They are watching everything and seeing his health/strength/athleticism/swing on a daily basis. I don't really know how it looks beyond what the stat sheet shows, but if they think he's in good form, then yeah, they can and probably are encouraged.

Braves --- 75 wins too optimistic?
