MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

No, I could see them hanging around near .500 if things break right, though a mid-season sell-off might change that. Thing is, my bet is the NL Wild Card will be a pretty high target this year.

With Byrd coming to Cleveland even on a minor league deal I would put his odds of making the ML roster around 100% would you? Also who gets the cut from the 40 man?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
Yeah, I have to think he took the opportunity b/c he felt there was a really good shot (and that it was a topic of conversation with the club). The guy can still hit, especially lefties.

Can the Giants survive without depth in the rotation even with one of the best lineups in the game (arguably)? Especially in a tough division
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
They might have more depth than you're giving credit. As I noted in the offseason in review piece, they added a ton of arms to the 40-man and always seem to hit on guys who weren't hyped prospects. And there's always the trade deadline to fill in the gaps.

Why didnt the Mets try to resign Uribe? With Wright injury history, he can also play other positions in the infield. And he was a top 10 3B two offseasons ago
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
What kind of playing time could they promise him? They have Flores to cover at third. And Uribe really hasn't played other spots much of late.

does hou move carlos gomez even if they are in contention?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
I doubt that, though crazier things have happened (Cespedes for Lester among them).

Mind-boggling to think a contract of $2M (Simon) is "no obligation, really"...
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
In any setting but MLB salaries, maybe. That's not much cash these days.
Moose
3:45
I didnt see the mailbag published either.
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
Hmmmmm
Yeah you might be right.
3:47
Sorry, we'll sort that out next week.

Chat from Rio, Brazil. No Baseball in this year Olympics. Wouldn't MLB be better served worldwide by participating every 4 years? The World Classic will never come close to the international exposure.
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
I'd love to see it. Definitely a missed opportunity in a burgeoning baseball nation!
Michael
3:48
Are the A's contenders or rebuilders?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
Wait and see-ers. They can be flexible and go either way this summer.
bird
3:49
i totally agree w/ puig decision. you?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
From what I've seen, yes. No indication that the facts supported anything that would constitute domestic violence, so he shouldn't be punished under that policy. (Again, assuming the publicly reported facts are what MLB found too.)
Michael
3:50
Which Rockies pitching prospect will most likely pitch well at Coors field?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
If I could answer this question, I'd probably be sitting in an office two miles away from where I am right now (at Coors).
John
3:50
If the Rockies struggle this year will they trade CarGo
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Definitely could/should. Hard to guess what's going on at that office 2 miles away from my place!
Crizno
3:51
Which team had the "worst" off season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
You know, I was a little bit baffled by ... yeah, the team that plays in the city I live in.
Steven
3:52
I don't get why the A's keep Eric Sogard on the team over guys like Joey Wendle, whom they traded Brandon Moss for. Sogard is not getting better and can't hit himself out of a wet paper bag.
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Sogard may well not make the club, but there's no reason to rush Wendle at this point when they have infield options. Not like he's out of options or something.
Sean
3:53
Do you think the Rangers should pursue Derek Norris, or should they be content with Chirinos and Gimenez?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
I think they should be looking to add there, myself. Doesn't mean they should overpay, either, but I always felt a little uncertain about that situation.
Michael
3:54
Any chance Trevor Rosenthal is given a chance to start?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Have not heard any suggestion of it, and I'd be stunned.
Doug
3:54
Any chance Melvin Upton returns to form now that he doesn't have to worry about lil bro showing him up every day?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
He should be a useful 4th OF type, but it would be surprising if he returned to being a guy worthy of his contract, I guess.
Order of questions
3:55
Do you ever answer a question asked in the beginning of the chat by the end of it? Or is it skip and gone ...
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
Not really. There are too many to sort through to keep one and return to it.
John
3:55
Who's going to be the best NL closer this year
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Jansen would be the obvious choice for me.
Ray
