MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

Jeffrey Todd

I'll take ATL
Elliot
3:56
Do you think the Mets releasing Ruben was more about saving money instead of baseball reasons?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
It was about saving money, yeah, but they'd probably have kept him if they felt he was a useful roster piece at this point.
Jacob
3:57
If MLBTR held a staff home run derby contest, which writer would win?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Probably a tie with zero, but I would feel pretty good about my chances. Not sure any of the other guys have played a lot recently. Brad Johnson does play ball, but he's a pitcher.
Bryan CA
3:58
How long a leash would Giants have with Cain, Peavy, and Pagan with Heston, Blackburn, and Williamson waiting in the wings?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
This is the Giants we are talking about, so I'd guess those guys will be rolled out there through the trade deadline so long as they are healthy. At least, they'll get a good long chance to make or break early.
Bob
3:59
I know: It's just spring training. But could Cesar Hernandez be legit?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
Legit in that he's a useful enough player, sure, but I wouldn't be expecting him to turn into a quality regular or anything. But who knows? Baseball!
Jon Daniels
4:00
If I want to extend Adrian Beltre, how many years should I give him?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
They'll try to keep it to 2, but personally I think I'd be comfortable going 3. Dude is amazing.
Jake from State Farm
4:01
If the Mariners struggle again this season, do you see them trading Felix for prospects and go into full rebuilding mode?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
He'd be awfully tough to trade, but I am sure they'd have to at least consider it in a true disaster scenario.
Mike
4:02
Surprised to hear Chipper Jones say he has no desire to manage?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Not really. It's a grind, and I'm sure there are a lot of guys who don't really want to return to it. All the more so since a manager ends up spending so much time answering to the media and are such easy fall guys.
Fan

I know you're close to wrapping this up but I just want to say I'm a big fan of MLBTR and I appreciate that you do these semi-weekly (or whatever) chats with readers like this. You're the only site I know that has a sizable readerbase and still keeps communication lines open like this. And yes I know I just made up the word "readerbase".
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Much appreciated!
I will wrap it up fairly soon, but unless/until something breaks I can keep it going for a bit.
Donk
4:04
If Kershaw goes down, no way the Dodgers even sniff the playoffs, right?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
They still could, but he'd be a monumental loss for any team. He's unreal.
Webster's

Words vs. Action. Celebration vs. go about your business. Harper vs. Trout. Who is most correct in what modern baseball needs or how it should be approached?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
Both are being true to their personalities, as they should be. Let's not forget that Harper is a baseball junkie who was always criticized for being too aggressive and hard-nosed. I tend to agree with him: show how you feel when there's a huge moment, but it is bush league to be showboating every time you perform well.
Lisa
4:06
If the Twins are out of contention and Perkins is doing fine as the closer, do you see him getting traded at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
Not really, no. The team is pretty committed to him, it seems, and this isn't a must-win year.
Teffrey Jodd
4:07
How would you assess the job done by Rob Manfred so far?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Without knowing how things have gone behind the scenes, I think he's navigated the trickier issues he's had well and looks to have a good handle on how to continue the league's success. CBA will be an interesting test.
Coppy
4:08
Sonny Gray for Mallex Smith, Tyrell Jenkins, and Kolby Allard? Braves get front line starter to head Sun Trust and A's get starting CF and two hot pitching prospects
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Not a lot of trade scenarios today!
That's way light for Gray.
Marc
4:09
Going to Colorado soon! anything on the "must do" list for visitors?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Hit me up on twitter and I'll fill you in fully, but it's more of a place to soak in and enjoy than to "see the sights" in. Mountains, beer, bike around, etc.
Donk
4:09
Humor me. What type of trade return would MadBum bring?
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
Exciting young MLB talent or top-ten overall headliner, another top-100 type, and then some. Not happening, of course.
Mark
4:11
If you go 3 on Beltre, what do you do with Gallo?
Jeffrey Todd
4:11
Gallo can play OF or 1B.
@Sullivan_Ranger
Ian Desmond playing center tonight in Surprise
Yes!
Should be fun to see if that becomes a thing.
braves
4:12
Think the yanks might try to dump McCann? Maybe the Braves would be interested? No clear C for the future and the Brewers have really high asking price for Lucroy...
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Don't see this at all, sorry. He's gone, barring some late-career return.
