MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

Team just isn't hitting yet. That should come around. Bigger question is going to be whether any holes open in the rotation due to workload last year, but that's just impossible to predict.
5:06
BTW, my review of the Mets' offseason will hit the site when we wrap up the chat.
Manfred
5:06
Who will I give a bigger suspension to: Olivera or Reyes?
Jeffrey Todd
5:06
Don't know all the facts yet, so I couldn't predict. But man, that policy is getting tested quickly -- unfortunately.
Tripp
5:07
Will there be any elite RP's available at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
5:07
Well, there usually are, but with Kimbrel and Chapman moving before the season it may be slimmer pickings this year.
Andrew Cashner
5:08
Do I get a QO?
Jeffrey Todd
5:08
Trending towards a no.
Jason
5:08
When and, most importantly, how do the Sox get rid of Pablo?
Jeffrey Todd
5:09
"How" is the key here. Don't see another team taking on any kind of salary at this point, and he's probably too talented to just cut loose. We really just don't know how this DL stint will play out. As Jason also covers on the podcast, it's not clear what kind of role he could play on the roster when he's ready to be activated. Highly uncertain, all things considered.
Mike
5:10
Any idea when Trea Turner gets the call?
Jeffrey Todd
5:10
Well, there isn't a huge need right now, especially with the easy early-season schedule and things generally clicking. But he's raking and Espinosa isn't, so it could come any time the FO decides it's time.

Sorry, i worded my first minor league contract question incorrectly. i meant like when they are actually playing in the minors and not in the majors. Thanks
Jeffrey Todd
5:11
If I wasn't clear, that's what I meant by referencing the $200K+ range. Those guys all get different amounts, but the ones with some leverage are able to earn $100K and more while playing in the minors.
Aaron
5:11
Do the Rangers make a trade for a catcher, or do they have faith in Brett Nicholas? And if they're going the trade route, who do they target?
Jeffrey Todd
5:12
They'll wait and see, and it's going to be darn near impossible to land a quality piece now -- barring some huge Lucroy deal that would be largely unprecedented -- but they are suspect #1 on the catching market.
Trevor
5:12
HHas the clock run out on AJ Cole?
Jeffrey Todd
5:13
Think he's first man up when a spot start is needed. Even if he doesn't recover in the strikeout dept, he still looks like a MLB pitcher -- if nothing else, in the pen.
Mike
5:13
Can you clear up something for me. Olivera, other Cubans, and foreign players, are they American Citizens? Does Olivera run the risk of his contract voided if found guilty?
Jeffrey Todd
5:13
Plenty of players are not citizens, though some become citizens. But they have to go through the process to do so. And there definitely can be immigration consequences -- potentially quite significant ones -- in the event of a conviction.

With Stumpf's PED suspension, the Phillies essentially get a free 80 game break on the Rule 5 regulations right? Will that be changed with the new CBA?
Jeffrey Todd
5:14
Not quite - he still has to be on the active roster for a certain number of days (forget exactly how many). It makes it slightly easier to keep him, in theory, though who knows if PHI will be as willing to carry an inexperienced arm in 2017.
5:15
Braves went through this recently with Daniel Winkler, who only returned late last year from surgery and needed to be on the roster for a certain stretch this season for his rights to transfer.
5:16
(Was trying to look it up quick ... believe he still hasn't reached enough active roster time. And of course is now sidelined again.)

5:16
More likely to keep up early production: T Story or T white?
Jeffrey Todd
5:17
Ran a poll on this recently, but White has the better minor league numbers in terms of plate discipline and such. Of course, he also has to keep hitting quite a bit since he doesn't play short.

I agree Shields for Pablo makes no sense, but what about Kemp for Pablo (maybe with a semi-interesting prospect thrown in)?
Jeffrey Todd
5:18
Not real sure what the Sox would want in Kemp, though I guess he could be a Papi replacement if HanRam is the 1B going forward. But where would he fit on the roster right now?
And sorting out the $$$ would remain a challenge.

De Aza make sense for Twins?
Jeffrey Todd
5:18
In theory, maybe, but are they in a spot where taking on 4 or 5 million of salary for this season makes sense? It's a big hole.
5:19
Looked at Fangraphs' playoff odds this morning, actually. That's not gospel - and isn't intended to be - but MIN is below 5% for making the postseason already. Dang.

Thoughts on Groome suspension ?
Jeffrey Todd
5:20
On the one hand, I hate high school players moving around all the time. On the other, it doesn't seem like that was really the case here, so it stinks to see. Hard to know the details, but you hate to see a guy like that have to sit at all.
5:21
FWIW, doesn't seem like it's going to have any impact on his draft status or anything, so no reason to be too concerned from that perspective -- far as I can tell, at least.

what part of austin are you in? Lets get a drink?!?!
Jeffrey Todd
5:21
Back in Denver, alas!
5:22
But if anyone wants to get a drink here ... aw dang, working tonight.

5:22
Better trade long term for the Phillies. The Giles one or the Hamels one?
Jeffrey Todd
5:23
Well, it's too soon to know, of course, but that doesn't mean it isn't fair to think about. They both look pretty darned promising. I felt at the time that the Giles deal had a nice mix of floor and ceiling -- wrote that in the Phils' offseason review, I believe -- b/c both Velasquez and Appel could be quality relievers even if they don't work out as starters. Obviously VV's early work is highly promising.
