MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

Derek Law is showing that he has the stuff. What are your thoughts on the chatter that he could be Cassilia's replacement in the 9th inning role?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Um, I don't see any chatter to that effect, at least for the present season. Always nice to have a young arm look good in his first run at the majors, but that's a long way off. I think Strickland is the likelier guy to take over the 9th at some point, if they decide to do that. (No indication they will, as yet.)
Jeff
2:33
Did you end up being a guest on "The Thinking LSAT Podcast" with Nathan Fox?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
I did! Thanks to you, mystery guy, for linking us up. Not sure when it will air.

With Vasquez back in the fold, does DD flip Swihart and more for more pitching? Who lines up well?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
We'll see how he is used and how he fares at Triple-A. But lots of teams would want a young, MLB-ready catcher if they think he can handle the role.

Hey Jeff. What do you make of the Indians moving Trevor Bauer to the bullpen to start the season? Personally, I think it's Tito's way of challenging him, basically saying okay, let's how he responds. Does he sulk and pout? Or does he say I'll be the best reliever in the game?" If he responded negatively, then they might trade him.
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
If he responds negatively, he might not have a ton of trade value. But I don't doubt there's some motivational purpose there. Also, they probably feel that gave them the best overall value to open the season.

I know I know its early but that Pirates pitching. Woof. Think they can bounce back and at least tread a little water until the cavalry arrives?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
It was a question coming into the season, a bigger one now. You can always expect some regression toward career norms/league average. The prospect cavalry will still need to establish itself at the MLB level if/when it arrives.
Jeff

How many more starts until Peavy and Cain are out of the rotation (3 starts so far their cumulative ERA is around 7(
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
What are the Giants going to do, stash them in the pen? Find a phantom DL reason? There's a lot to it, and they likely have reasonably long leashes, in part b/c the other arms they'd consider are far from sure things.

Is there any hope for optimism in the next few years or did Jocketty's bungled '15 trade deadline doom us until he 2020's
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Loads of young pitching, let's see how it plays out.

What's the earliest you could see a GM pulling off a trade? Is there some sort of rule of thumb for when in the season it's acceptable to take a risk? PTBNL and cash consideration type deals don't count for this purpose.
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Mid-June, usually, for a significant deal. I don't think it's so much a rule of thumb as a reflection of the fact that teams want some certainty about their situation before acting -- what are their realistic playoff odds? What are their big needs? How have prospects developed that you're trading for (from the other side)?

Mallex Smith is hitting .147 at the moment. At what point do the Braves just send him back down for seasoning instead of killing the clock?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
He wasn't really seen as a can't-miss, super-polished guy to begin with, so I wouldn't be too surprised. No reason to burn up his time if he isn't handling it, so I'm expecting he goes down soon as Inciarte is back, and they chalk it up as a learning experience.
PSA: Michael Morse is officially a free agent. Let the bidding war begin.

What's a fair timetable when evaluating Sano's ability in the outfield?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Well, the eye test can be revealing when it shows you underlying physical tools. Doesn't always require a significant sample. Not to say he can't make improvements, but it isn't looking so promising.

Will the DH ever be instituted in the NL. I sure hope not. I love the different nuisances that are in each league.
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
I agree! It's a fun, weird thing from my perspective. I understand why people don't enjoy watching pitchers hit, but I kind of like it for some odd reason.
matt
2:43
so how does the phillies trading giles look now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
About like it did at the time -- made sense to pull the trigger rather than rolling the dice that he'd keep things up. Made sense to cash him in then, as they can always develop more pen arms and buy whatever they still need when the time is right.

Braves to cut ties with Olivera altogether?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
Let's see what the facts are, but I would be pretty surprised.
Terry
2:45
Do you think Padres ownership has enough patience to allow Preller to trade some assets for prospects?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
No idea, but they should be willing to do so. The experiment has not worked out.
Bobby Evans
2:45
Giants can't score any runs, back end of their bullpen and rotation is horrendous. I'm panicking, what should I do, Jeff??
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
Plenty of time to let things sort out, and they are hardly buried in the division.
Wallace Wrightwood
2:46
Braves going to draft Corey Ray?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
No idea, but man, he was impressive in his MLBTR interview. Check out the series, some interesting guys in there: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/draft-prospect-qa

does mlbtr do a mock draft when it gets a little closer?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Not really our thing, we'd just be throwing darts.
Terry
2:47
Is Justin Bour a legitimate first baseman?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Not really. Maybe in a pure platoon.
Jesse
2:47
Do you think KC has to upgrade the Dyson/Orlando platoon?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
"Has to" is far too strong, I think. If it's not working, would be a reasonable area to target come July. And they could get a lot of value out of a good RHB that won't cost too much, so easy to do.
