MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 1/24/17

Steve Adams

They're about $12-13MM under the luxury tax, which makes it tough for me to see him going there unless they trade someone. They'll want some wiggle room for in-season additions, after all.
3:32
They are the most logical on-paper fit, though, I should point out, so if the Halos simply decide they're OK with limited in-season flexibility, it's possible. But, at this point, I think Boras is probably comfortable letting this drag on into Spring Training.
Longoria
3:32
Why did we trade Forsythe?
Steve Adams
3:33
Two years of a solid veteran for six-plus years of a potential mid-rotation piece. It's the kind of move the Rays frequently make to remain competitive. Plus, it allows them to reallocate Forsythe's $7MM salary to one of the remaining first basemen on the market, which could mean a Miller/Beckham platoon at 2B and Franklin in his previously projected super-utility role.
3:34
With the new 1B and possible contributions from De Leon very early in the season, they may not be *that* much worse off in terms of 2017 value, and they're positioned for more long-term value.
Sheen
3:35
Do you see Mychal Givens taking a step towards becoming a shutdown reliever this year?
Steve Adams
3:36
Dude has a 2.75 ERA and 11.5 K/9 through his first 104 career innings... I'd say he's pretty much already there, especially if he can rein in the walks a bit more in 2017 and keep his control numbers closer to their 2015 totals than his 2016 totals.
Craner
3:36
Which lefty reliever remaining would be your top choice?
Steve Adams
3:38
It always depends on asking price, but all things equal I'd take Blevins for a pure relief role. Wood, though, is the most appealing overall because of his ability to work out of the 'pen or the rotation. If I were working with a team I'd be pushing him as a potential rotation bargain, though, rather than a swingman or reliever.

3:38
where does Hwang fit into the Giants possible infield mix & does that shift Nunez to LF?
Steve Adams
3:39
Nowhere right now. He has to prove he can make the team. I don't think Nunez or Hwang will go to LF, but if Hwang rakes in Spring Training or shows enough to make the roster, then either one could be a super-utility option and bounce all over the diamond. Hwang has plenty of SS experience in Korea and was being marketed as a potential 2B option as well this winter.

Wouldn't Tim Lincecum be a great project for Eiland?
Steve Adams
3:41
Lincecum still has some name value, I guess, but what about the past 3-4 years creates any sort of optimism for his outlook? His agents tried to make a big deal about his "restored velocity" with the media, and when push came to shove he averaged 87.7 mph on his fastball last year. I don't think Eiland's going to be able to coax another 3-4 mph out of his fastball.
Pedro
3:42
I am in need of employment, but haven't gotten the multi-year deal I've wanted. Who gives me the one-year deal?
Steve Adams
3:42
Royals could kick $2-3MM his way to be a part-time DH. I don't think there's a great market for him.
(Assuming we're talking Alvarez of course -- I'm not sure what other Pedro you'd be referencing)
Colorado Kool-Ade
3:43
What if Desmond moves to the OF, and CarGo, or a 'lesser' OF moves to 1B. Does the Desmond move make sense then?
Steve Adams
3:44
It'd make more sense, I suppose, but it's not as if CarGo is a terrible right fielder in his own right. Desmond just wasn't a great fit in Colorado barring some kind of "trade Blackmon or Dahl for a significant rotation upgrade" scenario which doesn't seem to be happening.
GM in the Making
3:45
Wouldn't it make sense if the White Sox sign Matt Weiters? They need a lefty bat with some power and a catcher. Maybe a year for $8.5 million and an option year? They can always flip him at the trade deadline for prospects.
Steve Adams
3:45
Wieters to Chicago does make sense, but the Sox don't often deal with Scott Boras (though they do have Carlos Rodon on the team now).

They've just never showed that much interest in Wieters in the past, though.
And I think if Wieters were OK with $8.5MM + an option, he'd have found that by now.

3:46
Hey Steve thanks for the chat! Can you give us an update on what's happening with the Free Agent Prediction Contest?
Sluggah
3:47
How does Jason Castro get 24mil and Wilson Ramos get 12.5
Steve Adams
3:47
Ramos won't play until June or July. Castro is one of the best pitch framers in all of baseball, which every team is now valuing heavily (hence Hundley getting $2MM, Wieters remaining unsigned, etc.)
Steve
3:47
Can the braves legitimately compete for a wild card berth?
Steve Adams
3:48
I mean, any club can sneak into Wild Card contention (hello 2015 Twins), but I would bet strongly against it in 2017.
Zach
3:49
Now that we have had some distance from the trade, is the Adam Eaton trade still as horrible as it seemed in December?
Steve Adams
3:49
I didn't think it seemed horrible in December.
Bat Boy
3:49
Bonds & Clemens HOF next year?
Steve Adams
3:49
Maybe not quite next year, but they'll be in sometime in the next three years I'd imagine.
Hank
3:50
does Nick Hundly going to the Giants mean that Buster moves to first base for a sizeable chunk of the season?
Steve Adams
3:50
It means that Trevor Brown spends a big chunk of the year in the Minors. Posey's still one of the best defensive catchers on the planet. He should spend as much time behind the plate as his body will allow.
Mike
3:50
The blue Jays cannot be done. Does signing pagan to play LF make sense? Adds speed and a switch hitter to the lineup.
Steve Adams
3:50
Pagan would be a great add. I still think they'll pick up another outfielder and at least one, if not two relievers.
Matilda
3:50
Are the Padres done signing starting pitchers?
Steve Adams
3:51
Doesn't seem like it. I doubt all of Cahill, Richard and Chacin survive the season in the rotation. Adding a more reliable innings eater makes tons of sense for them, even if it's just someone like De La Rosa on a cheap one-year deal. (And whoever it is, it almost certainly will be cheap and for one year)
Casey
3:52
Nick Hundley? WHY?
Steve Adams
3:52
Because depth is a good thing and Trevor Brown's 2016 performance was underwhelming
Aoki
3:52
Surprised Dae Ho went back to Korea?
