MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 1/31/17

Steve Adams
3:11
Hey all -- about the slightly late start time! Start asking some questions and I'll get going in a couple of minutes
Tyler
3:12
More likely to sign first, mike Napoli or Chris carter?
Steve Adams
3:13
My money's on Carter. Napoli and the Rangers seem to be in a holding pattern, whereas I can see Carter going to the Rays for something like 1/5 plus incentives. And I don't think TB will spend enough to give Texas any real competition for Napoli
Jerry Blevins
3:13
Should I take less money to go back to the Mets
Steve Adams
3:14
Blevins is 33 and has made less than $11MM in his career. He should sign with whoever is going to offer him the best multi-year deal, which isn't likely to be the Mets
Dickie Noles
3:14
Will Jose Quintana be traded?
Steve Adams
3:14
At some point, yeah, but my expectation is that it won't be until midseason.
Brian
3:15
Dodgers done or is there another move to make for them?
Steve Adams
3:15
Still need some relievers at the very least
John
3:15
Will the Indians sign one of the available lefty relievers Logan, Blevins, or Breslow?
Steve Adams
3:15
Breslow maybe, but they won't spend at the levels needed to get Logan and Blevins
Josh
3:15
Hey Steve, what do you think of the Moss signing for KC? And wat are they gonna do with the rotation? Do they sign Hammel or do they make a small trade or go with an internal option like Zimmer?
Steve Adams
3:18
They got a nice price on Moss... I always liked them for one of the DH/1B bats out there but figured he'd have been too expensive. The heavy backloading of the deal works for them, though.

As for the rotation, no way they can count on Zimmer coming off years of shoulder problems and now TOS surgery. I doubt they spend on Hammel but bringing in some swingman type (Yusmeiro Petit?) that can cover multiple relief innings and also start on occasion would work well.
In the rotation, they've got Duffy-Vargas-Kennedy-Karns-Strahm with Young (another SP/RP type) in reserve, which isn't terrible. But more depth i always good

3:19
how was Robert Gselleman on Keith Laws top 100 prospect list but not Seth Lugo?
Steve Adams
3:20
Lugo exceeded rookie eligibility. Gsellman didn't.

I'm not saying Keith would've put Lugo on there either way -- I'd imagine he likes Gsellman better -- but I don't think Lugo was technically even eligible
Mallex Smith
3:20
Am i a full time player for the Rays?
Steve Adams
3:20
Maybe in 2018, but not this season, barring injuries
Brett
3:20
Ian Kinsler gonna be traded or no?
Steve Adams
3:21
The Dodgers were about the only team with a glaring 2B need, and they've since filled it. Kinsler should open the year in Detroit. Avila has basically said the assumption that they "needed" to shed veterans was somewhat overblown. (Which, if so, was largely his own doing with the early offseason comments)
Tom
3:22
Luke Weaver, Matt Adams, and high prospect not named Reyes or Perez = enough for Longoria?
Steve Adams
3:23
"Can we get an impact third baseman for a spare-part 1B that can't hit lefties and a pair of non-premium prospects?"

Nope. Asking price on Longoria would be huge.
Camden Yards
3:23
Travis Wood to O's? Starter, reliever, and maybe outfielder? We need another starter that is better than Ubaldo and Miley.
Steve Adams
3:24
Fit makes sense on paper, but I doubt the Orioles are going to be handing out significant paychecks after bringing back Trumbo. Wood will probably sign for more than they care to give, and it sounds like a defensive-minded OF is higher on Duquette's priorities anyway
Mike
3:24
Who will be Mets 5th starter
Steve Adams
3:25
Whoever has the better spring between Gsellman and Lugo. I think Wheeler's bullpen-bound after not pitching for two years. And I think that's the right call. If Gsellman wins the rotation job, I'd bet on Lugo going to the 'pen. If Lugo wins it, Gsellman to AAA sounds likelier (so they can keep him getting regular innings in the rotation)
Brian cashman
3:25
Am I done?!?! Who else
Steve Adams
3:25
He's all but said he's done on multiple instances this winter
Matt
3:26
Joe Smith, Boone Logan and Angel pagan. Is this possible for the Jays?
Steve Adams
3:26
Sure, it's technically possible, but I'd never recommend looking at a group of three specific free agents and banking on your team going 3-for-3 in signing them.
Mo
3:27
Is it smart to go to arbitration every once in a while, even if it's over a rather trivial amount, just to prove we can and will?
Steve Adams
3:28
I don't think any team will tell you there's ever a trivial amount, nor will any agent. The numbers seem insignificant, but each case is used as a future data point in arb cases. It's in every team's interest to hold the line, even if they're bartering over 200K, because the future implications are compounding. And it's in each player's interest, of course, to get every dollar possible and in the agents' interest to continue pushing the market forward.
3:29
I spoke to a number of execs about the arbitration process from the team perspective a couple years back and wrote an article on it, if you're interested:

Greg
3:29
Whose your surprise player this year (good or bad) i think jorge soler will hit .270/25/80
Steve Adams
3:30
I don't think that'd be a huge surprise. I don't have someone loaded up off the top of my head, I guess, but I think Drew Smyly's in for a nice year in Seattle so long as his shoulder doesn't explode.
Arenado
3:31
What would a long term deal look like for me right now?
Steve Adams
3:32
He has the same agents as Giancarlo Stanton and is very arguably a better player than Giancarlo Stanton who is the same age Giancarlo Stanton was when he signed his contract.
How many times can I work "Giancarlo Stanton" into a single response? Giancarlo Stanton.

Was the Cardinals's punishment hard or did they get off easy?
