MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 1/31/17

Steve Adams

It feels light to me. Manfred was in a tough spot with no real precedent from which to work, but I thought it'd be more than a couple of picks that both fall outside the first round.
Doug Fister
3:33
Any chatter on where I might land? Should I settle for A MiLB deal, since we're close to pitchers & catchers reporting to Spring Training?
Steve Adams
3:34
Even with the past two years going poorly, I'd have to imagine he gets a MLB deal somewhere. There's a cheap-ish arm the Royals could plug into the rotation (referring back to the previous KC SP question)
Scott
3:34
Who will be the rangers closer?
Steve Adams
3:34
Sam Dyson's job to lose
Jurickson P.
3:34
Any traction to Rangers/Rays talks on Profar? Seems Rangers would be selling low, and without the leverage.
Steve Adams
3:35
It sounds like the Rays merely reached out. They've probably talked to virtually every team with an available infielder since moving Forsythe, and they've definitely checked in with every agent of a 1B/DH type in which they'd have interest. Profar's one of many, many possibilities. I doubt Texas moves him coming off such a poor season.
3:36
I know he's a former No. 1 overall prospect, but the buzz fans have surrounding Profar is tough for me to comprehend. He's still young, but he missed two full seasons with shoulder problems and returned to hit .239/.321/.338 in Texas of all places (75 OPS+)

3:37
Am I gonna spend the whole 5 years with Colorado or am I destined to get traded at some point?
Steve Adams
3:38
No team really signs a player to that kind of contract with the intent of trading him. Bridich seems to love him. I still don't get playing him at 1B. Hopefully that's only for one year
Curly_W
3:39
Might Jeremy Jeffress be available to a team in need of a closer? He looked awfully good in Milwaukee last year.
Steve Adams
3:39
Rangers are probably less open to moving a reliever now that Diekman is out at least half the season

Am I a sandwich?
Steve Adams
3:39
Damn straight

3:39
Landing spot for Jeff Francouer?
Steve Adams
3:39
Guessing a minors deal back in ATL
QuickSandy A.
3:40
"Bruce is my RF." Is that a face-saving spin, or a sign that he goofed? Or both?
Steve Adams
3:40
I've said since the trade that it was a mistake to acquire him. It's some of both, I suppose, but at this point anyone who's been paying attention knows the Mets probably would like a mulligan on the whole scenario

3:41
Twins??? What improvements, if any coming
Steve Adams
3:41
At least one reliever... some kind of outspoken veteran bat for the bench as well, most likely. They really seem to want to add some kind of leadership piece there

3:42
Has it gotten to the point where the Brewers just need to plug Bronson, Lopez, and Hader into the lineup/rotation and see what they do?
Steve Adams
3:43
Throwing your hands up and saying "Screw it let's just play all the kids" is not the best way to go about a rebuild. Plus, Milwaukee's been rebuilding for what? Two years?
Super braves fan

Falcons or Patriots
Steve Adams
3:44
Don't know and don't much care, to be honest. Football is a distant third behind baseball and basketball on my list of favorite sports.

Rumor is Twins are reluctant to go multiple years with a reliever. Smart stance in your opinion? It seems like the need is great enough to justify the investment.
Steve Adams
3:45
There are enough arms left that they can get someone on a nice one-year deal. I wouldn't mind a two-year investment if it was a good price -- 2/10 for Blanton or something, OK -- but steering clear of 2/14 or something of the sort for Boone Logan seems perfectly defensible.
Angels GM
3:46
What pitcher will the Rays send back if I offer them CJ Cron?
Steve Adams
3:47
I don't think Cron is oozing with trade value. Maybe Erasmo? I wouldn't offer anyone better than that
Bert
3:48
How about Ryan Howard to Texas as a low risk 1B/DH?
Steve Adams
3:48
If he's willing to take a minor league deal, sure -- but that'd be my response re: Howard to most AL teams
Tony
3:48
Are the Tigers A sleeping Giant? How many Miracles Will it take for them to contend?
Steve Adams
3:49
They were right in the mix until the end of the season in 2016 despite myriad injuries. It won't take too many miracles... just a healthy season from Zimmermann and a step forward for someone like Norris or Boyd. The Tigers look like a solid team on paper.
Me
3:50
I asked a really smart question earlier. Why didn't you answer it?
Steve Adams
3:50
Your intelligence was too intimidating.
Spring Training
3:50
Even though people say I don't matter, there's still something comforting about me, right Steve?
Steve Adams
3:51
Spring Training matters in some aspects. Seeing how potentially injured players are progressing, namely, and also getting a look at some Rule 5 guys and position battles. But stats produced are often misleading due to the small sample and the strength (or lack thereof) of the competition the players are facing.
And ST is fun just because it's baseball after a long layoff
Ben
3:51
Serious, non-snarky, not-trying-to-ride-you question; I just don't understand. Is there a reason we should care when a player changes agents?
Steve Adams
3:52
Not necessarily, but it's newsworthy to the industry and every single team/agency reads MLBTR daily. I don't say that to boast or sound arrogant -- but it's true. And, in some instances (e.g. Player X hires Scott Boras), it does occasionally diminish the chances of a player signing an extension
3:53
Also changes like Jason Hammel matter... agency changes in the middle of free agency are never a good thing for a player
