If Ramos is out of the picture, Wieters makes some sense there though -- Boras/Lerner connection is strong.
Kazmir
3:34
If you were me, would you opt out?
Steve Adams
3:35
Nope. Finished the year on the DL, didn't pitch well when healthy. Even with a terrible market for pitching, I wouldn't expect him to do better than 2/32.
Danny
3:36
Which teams have the three best/worst farm systems going into the winter meetings?
Steve Adams
3:37
Bottom three is Angels, Marlins and maybe the Orioles... top three... Yankees/Rockies/Brewers are all really strong. Astros are up there still, though one of their best arms (Musgrove) graduated in the second half
Troy
3:38
Do you see Ian Desmond remaining in the OF and would he be a target for the Cardinals OF?
Steve Adams
3:38
I think he'll stay wherever someone pays him the most, honestly. He does make sense for the Cardinals, especially since he could theoretically cover some infield if needed, and the Cards do value being able to move their guys around.

3:39
What trade piece do is Dave Dombrowksi most likely to move this off season?
Steve Adams
3:39
Shaw? One of the young catchers? He's not moving Betts, Bogaerts, Bradley, Benintendi and probably not E-Rod either.
Orioles homer
3:40
Does Trey Mancini have enough in his bat to be Baltimore's DH next year?
Steve Adams
3:42
I know Orioles fans are excited that he came up and homered three times, but he didn't hit a ton in Triple-A last season, and he's never been graded out better than an average hit tool and solid-average power, that I've seen. That's not exactly an exceptionally enticing package for a DH, but he could probably be serviceable there for cheaper than Alvarez+pick your platoon partner.

Royals are said to shake things up. How likely is a Hosmer trade?
Steve Adams
3:43
I don't consider that all that likely -- they're going to try to win next season while the rest of their core is in place, and Hosmer is a leader in that clubhouse and wildly popular with the fans. I think they'll add some supplemental pieces, and if things go south and they're definitively out of it in late July, then you'll see guys like Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain and Davis possibly dealt.

3:43
How bout Chris Carter to replace Trumbo?
Steve Adams
3:45
Any team, the Orioles included, could've had Carter by giving him more than $2.5MM last season, but they all elected to pass. Carter didn't do anything especially different from his previous years ... tons of Ks, tons of BBs, tons of HRs. They'd have to put him at DH, so they'd still need a RF (Trumbo was never really an RF anyway). I don't love the fit. Get some more OBP and cut down on some of the K's in that lineup.

3:46
Any chance Wacha is traded?
Steve Adams
3:46
They'd be selling awfully low on him -- I don't think it makes a lot of sense. Plus there's plenty of uncertainty in the STL rotation with Garcia's option, Lynn coming off TJ, Waino's struggles in 2016, Reyes not having worked a full season of innings in the Majors. They need the depth.
Conor Gillespie
3:47
Hey, did you catch my hit off Chapman last night? After Sergio Romo blew yet another save, do you think the Giants might be in play for a closer next year? Likely targets?
Steve Adams
3:48
Last night's game rocked. Tons of fun. Except that I stayed up until nearly 3am ET watching the finish and then woke up at 7:45 to get ready to work. Could've gone an inning or two shorter!

I think the Giants will be in on all the top closers -- Chapman, Jansen, Melancon ... Evans has lamented not paying more for Melancon this summer already. (I think that was a good call, personally... Nats even gave up too much to get him.)

If you correctly predict the next Rockies manager I'll give you a prize.
Steve Adams
3:48
Exciting! Pencil me in for GlenAllen Hill because I don't expect the Rox of all organizations to go outside and make a big shakeup.
Hey
3:49
You suck.
Steve Adams
3:49
Woe is me.

3:49
Should the Rockies make a run for Nova and/or Hellickson?
Steve Adams
3:51
The last thing I think the Rockies should be doing is overpaying marginal starting pitchers to convince them to come to Coors. Beating the market for mid- or back-of-the-rotation arms isn't any way to build a pitching staff (see: Twins, Minnesota).

The Rockies develop bats with aplomb and struggle to cultivate talented young pitchers -- though Gray, Anderson and others have a good deal of promise -- I don't know why they don't continually trade their intriguing young hitters for pitching help.

Do I accept a QO?
Steve Adams
3:51
Nah I think he rejects it
Nick
3:51
Sad free agency when Nova and Hellickson are the top two SP!!!!
Steve Adams
3:51
They're #2 and #3. All hail king Rich Hill.

3:51
Archer: extended, traded, or nothing happens?
Steve Adams
3:52
They already extended Archer. He's controlled dirt cheap through 2021, which is why he's so coveted.
And I think he'll stay. One of Odorizzi, Smyly or Erasmo probably goes, though. Maybe Cobb, but the value there isn't at its peak.
Then again neither is Smyly's.

3:52
Can we expect to see Frazier in pinstripes at some point next year?
Steve Adams
3:53
Clint? Yes. Todd? No.

Clint Frazier late in mid-to-late 2017 isn't unthinkable.
Jon
3:53
What type of FA moves do you see the Padres making? And how bad has the AJP situation hurt others GM's willingness to trade with them?
Steve Adams
3:54
They know Preller's going to have to be extra meticulous to disclose everything now or else he'll be in line for some actually stiff punishment. If he has assets that people want, they'll trade with him.

I think San Diego will re-sign Clayton Richard and make another upside play in the rotation. Should pick up some bargain relievers, too.
Ryan
3:54
Is Buxton still considered untouchable by the Twins?
Steve Adams
3:55
Impossible to say with a new baseball ops team, but he was really good in September and is still 22 and teeming with tools and talent. I don't know why you'd give him up unless he was the centerpiece for someone both somewhat controllable and elite.

Does Trumbo's deal exceed what Nelly Cruz received a couple years ago?
