Do you think the increase in hard throwing relievers, along with their potential change in usage, may actually be harmful to the game. While the strategy is completely logical (and great that managers are being more flexible), it seems like the game can be out of reach if you fall behind after 6 innings (certainly some recency bias in this question though)
Steve Adams
3:37
There are always going to be new trends toward a certain commodity or way of operating a club, and then there will be new things that emerge deviating from those new norms. All sports teams are constantly trying to find new means of being successful, but when that model is successful and inevitably emulated, something else just comes along.

With a uber weak farm and an owner who isn't inclined to spend, how do the Angels get back to contention?
Steve Adams
3:38
I'd expect them to spend more this winter than last now that WIlson and Weaver are off the books. But it's also tough for me to envision a contending club there next year without a whole lot breaking right. I'd anticipate that they'll spin their wheels for awhile unless Arte comes off the luxury tax thing.

3:39
Who is your sleeper FA? By that I mean who do you think will end up getting a much bigger contract than expected and make people scratch their heads?
Steve Adams
3:40
Virtually every reliever available? I think Chapman, Jansen and Melancon will all break Papelbon's record this winter. I'm probably one of the higher guys on Justin Turner as well, and if you want me to dig a little deeper, I think Jason Castro SHOULD get paid more than people would think, though I don't know that he actually WILL.

With only a handful of at bats in the last 6 months, please tell cub fans to temper their Schwarber expectations!!
Steve Adams
3:41
No can do -- It's World Series time -- narratives are overpowering and expectations are more irrational than ever! Such is life in late October.
Mets
3:42
Would Cesp be willing to go back to Center if the Mets gave him the contract he's looking for ?
Steve Adams
3:42
Seems like kind of a moot point since I don't think the Mets are going to double the $75MM they gave him last year and I do think he'll sign $140-150MM this winter.

3:43
Any targets for the Phillies to replace Hellickson"? Guessing they are not interested in any long-term contracts.
Steve Adams
3:44
Why not take on one of the Tigers' crappy one-year commitments and make them kick in a prospect to eat the money, too? Gamble on Anibal or Pelfrey. Even if (when?) they stink, Phillies aren't exactly planning to contend next year anyway, and if one pitches even half decent, could always flip him for whatever's out there in July.

3:44
Is Ryan Howard done?
Steve Adams
3:44
He'll probably get a marginal commitment to act as a bench bat/part-time DH next year. Couple million bucks on a one-year deal?
John Mozeliak
3:45
Will Pollock be available? Cuz I'd like him in CF for my team
Steve Adams
3:45
Hazen suggested that they're trying to win at his introductory press conference -- probably a mandate from ownership, I would think -- so I don't envision them moving Pollock, no.

Could Edwin Diaz become an elite closer?
Steve Adams
3:47
I'd argue that he already is. I recognize that a lot of people will need to see him do it over a full season, but he was so overpowering in 2016... really exciting sort of out-of-the-blue development for M's fans.

Predictions for what the "top pitches" (Hellickson, Hill, Nova, etc.) get on the open market? Moreso than numbers, do they actually get overpaid or do you think teams are smart enough to realize what they are and go after more creative solutions?
Steve Adams
3:48
They'll be overpaid. The fact that there are no good arms won't make teams universally agree to curb their spending on the few decent arms out there, it'll only drive up the price. I'm at four years and more than $50MM on each of them.

3:48
How many of the Tigers big contracts get moved?
Steve Adams
3:49
I'd guess JD Martinez and one of the crappy pitcher contracts (Pelf/Sanchez). Maybe Mark Lowe, too, if they can find a taker. But not expecting cornerstone guys like Miggy or Verlander to go.

Hello from Guatemala. Which player/players do you think the Royals should target via FA or Trade? (Starters, Relievers and Bats) Thanks!!
Steve Adams
3:51
Thanks for joining! I don't think the Royals are really going to target many additions at all, which probably isn't the news you want to hear. Their payroll is already sky-high, and if anything they might try to trim it. I can see a few marginal additions here and there -- a reliever or two that might sign for one year and under $4MM, but don't expect them to make a significant splash in free agency or swing any kind of trade that'll add payroll. If anything, they might move some well-compensated guys (e.g. Wade Davis).
My offseason outlook for them will run tonight or tomorrow morning.

What will Sean Rodriguez command this winter? Can pirates retain him?
Steve Adams
3:52
I think he'll get multiple years and a decent annual value... something in the 2/12 range perhaps, coming off a nice season. I kicked around a three-year deal on him for a bit, but I'm not sold on that at the moment. Doubt the Buccos pay all that much for a utility guy.
3:53
I'd expect he lands elsewhere.
AJ
3:53
Could you see Fowler take the 17M C.O. and come back to the Cubs?
Steve Adams
3:53
Nope.
He could return to the Cubs, but it'd be on a multi-year deal.
Career Minor Leaguer
3:54
Did Looney do enough to get an MLB contract next year, or just enough for a Minors deal?
Steve Adams
3:55
Assuming that's intended to be "Loney" (whom I will forever now refer to as "Looney" in my mind!) -- no, I don't think he was particuarly impressive. Limited power and on-base skills, no speed or baserunning value... both Fangraphs and B-Ref have him below replacement level. He's a minor league deal guy for me.

3:55
I don't see the Giants REALLY trying to sign Aroldis Chapman or Kenley Jansen...price on both with be steep and Dodgers will give Jansen a QO...I think Melancon is better suited for the Giants...are there any other Closers that might be available for trade?..Going to be a fairly quiet of season for the Giants with only one need
Steve Adams
3:56
Wade Davis could be available as well, but the asking price would be high. I don't think the Giants are keen on giving up someone like Beede in there, and I'm sure his name would come up. I like them a lot as a Melancon destination.

3:56
Have you ever met any of the GMs of these teams before?
Steve Adams
3:57
Yeah several, and emailed with others. We've had GMs on our podcast and regularly have people at the GM Meeting and Winter Meetings. We try to come out of our caves and show our faces every now and then!

3:57
Can you see me in St. Louis?
Steve Adams
3:58
Nah that's a stretch. Derrick Goold recently said he thinks they'll trade for the CF they're seeking, and that makes sense to me, though I do also love the Fowler fit there.
