Is Trea Turner's best comp Mookie Betts?
Steve Adams
3:29
Mookie Betts is on the short list of the 5-10 best players in the game. I love Trea Turner, but he doesn't have 30-homer power and he has all of 50 games of regular duty at the MLB level under his belt. Pump the brakes on that comp.

Who do you like of the young A's starters besides Gray and Manaea
Steve Adams
3:32
Kendall Graveman can be a perfectly serviceable 4/5 starter in that park, and I'm particularly intrigued by Andrew Triggs. He's not "young" like many of their other arms, but he struck out nearly a batter per inning with excellent control and a well above-average ground-ball rate this season. If his arm can hold up over a full season as a starter, he has huge sleeper potential, in my eyes.

Also intrigued by Jharel Cotton, but it'd be nice to see him keep the ball on the ground more or up his K rate at the big league level. But, as is the case with Graveman, O.Co can help to mitigate either flaw if they both remain below average. And the control seems strong.

What kind of return could the Twins get if they moved Ervin Santana this winter?
Steve Adams
3:35
Probably more than most people expect. If Santana were a free agent he'd be the most in-demand name of the winter alongside Rich Hill. Having him at 2/27 with an option for a third season is a well below market price right now, and if they show any willingness to eat some cash, the return only moves upward.

If you're the Twins, I don't know how you move him for anything less than a guy who ranks comfortably in the most Top 100 prospect lists plus another piece or two ... or for someone who can make an immediate impact on the MLB roster but comes with more control and a cheaper price tag. In this market, Santana is a steal, and steals come with lofty asking prices, even if the ceiling isn't especially high.

Hey Steve. What are your thoughts about Showalter not using Britton in the 11th inning? Personally, I feel you have to use your best players in a winner-take-all, one game scenario, and cross the bridge of a save situation when you reach it. This decision has to be worse than Gonzalez using Carpenter instead of Kimbrel in '13 versus the Dodgers and Little using Pedro versus the Yankees in '03. At least, Carpenter was very good for Atlanta that year, and Pedro's a Hall of Famer.
Steve Adams
3:37
Britton should've been in that game whether it was a winner-take-all, Game 1 of a five- or seven-game series or a random mid-May game with 100-something to play in the season. It's inexcusable to lose with the game's best reliever sitting on the bench while you pitch a Minor League pickup with a crappy track record (Duensing) and one of the worst SP investments in recent memory (Ubaldo) over him.
3:38
The fact that Buck said after the game that pitching on the road was part of the equation is even more damning. The decision not to use Britton is so unfathomable to me that I'm sitting here wondering if he felt something while he was warming up in the 8th and the O's just don't want to say anything right now.

Who are some realistic free agent signings for the Indians this off-season? Which positions do they need the most help?
Steve Adams
3:40
I expect they'll make a push to re-sign Napoli, but they could come up short since he'll be considerably more expensive this time around. They'll need a 1B replacement and possibly some outfield help with Davis set to walk and no certainty regarding Brantley. If Carlos Gomez wants a one-year deal to reestablish his value, I'd jump all over that if I were Cleveland. Also think Steve Pearce could be a nice Napoli-esque value play for them at first base.

Do i lose my job over this, am i on thin ice now?
Steve Adams
3:41
Nope.
Showalter is signed through 2018 and can probably stay in Baltimore as long as he wants. It's a glaring mistake but it doesn't undo all the good he's done there since coming on board.

Will Kim Ng finally get a GM job this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:45
If a team decides she's the best candidate, sure. I say this a lot about Kim Ng, but there's an assumption out there that the reason she doesn't get GM jobs is because she's female. I think the fact that she's continually considered suggests there are plenty of clubs that are comfortable hiring a female GM, but they've simply elected to go other directions in the past.

I think it'd be great if Ng got a GM position and was successful. But just as I don't think she should be disqualified for being female, I don't think her gender should entitle her to a position either. There's a belief among some that she's been wronged and passed over due to her gender, and I just don't agree with that. There are lots of candidates for managerial positions and executive roles alike that have interviewed many times and simply never gotten the gig.
I'd be happy to see a female GM/president sooner rather than later though, whether it's Ng or another candidate we haven't heard much about yet.

Ryan Howard - MLB contract, MiLB contract, retirement? Which one is the likeliest outcome?
Steve Adams
3:46
I don't think he'll retire. He could get a couple million bucks as a bench bat/platoon DH if he signs early in the offseason, but I can also see him lingering on the market and settling for an MiLB deal in February, a la Jimmy Rollins.

Calhoun for Archer?
Steve Adams
3:46
Not enough for the Rays to get back. And I say that as an avid "Kole Calhoun guy." (He's awesome)

3:47
Will my team finish over .500 next year?
Steve Adams
3:47
How can we judge that before knowing what the offseason will do to their roster?
Referee Vogt
3:47
We do need outfield help in Oakland! With no OF prospects really in the farm, what are some realistic trade partners that you think might match up off the top of your head.
Steve Adams
3:49
Marlins will be in the market for controllable pitching and have Marcell Ozuna to dangle.

Pirates could also use some rotation help, but they're in a weird spot with McCutchen. It's tough to see him being traded at all, let alone to the A's, but there's an on-paper fit there.

Yankees have a lot of outfielders and a need for rotation help, too.

Who signs the pitcher from Japan, I don't remember his name, Oteni?
Steve Adams
3:49
No word that Shohei Otani will even be available in the near future.
Ryan
3:50
Odds of Jake Peavy finishing out his career with the Padres?
Steve Adams
3:50
San Diego will need someone just to take the ball every fifth day. Peavy can at least do that, I suppose, but he's been terrible for most of the season.

The wild card games get better and better
Steve Adams
3:50
This year spawned a pair of classics. I don't love the notion of an entire 162-game season simply boiling down to a one-game playoff, but it makes for good drama.

3:51
Do you expect a brawl between the Jays and Rangers this series?
Steve Adams
3:52
I hope not, but I'm sure emotions and tempers will both flare up at some point. My hope is that we can avoid pitchers throwing at hitters and all of that crap, but I don't have any faith that'll actually play out. Something will probably spark a confrontation at some point.

3:52
who will replace Ortiz as DH?
Steve Adams
3:52
Panda/Hanley rotation makes sense, as does a pursuit of Edwin Encarnacion or Kendrys Morales.
Joe Orsulak
3:53
Do you think we'll ever go a chat without someone saying "who hangs up first?"
Steve Adams
3:53
I do not, ha.

3:53
Outfield targets for the Mariners this year? Sounds like we keep one of Aoki/Smith so we'll have a corneroutfield hole to fill. Cespedes/Desmond probably out of their price range. De Aza? Davis?
Steve Adams
3:55
De Aza doesn't have the defensive chops to fit Dipoto's model. Rajai makes sense as a platoon partner for Smith, but he's played well enough that he might try to find a more regular role than a 200-300 AB gig. Carlos Gomez on a short-term deal ... maybe Peter Bourjos (Angels/Dipoto connection) as a fourth OF. I could see Jon Jay (could also see him in Cleveland too, going back to an earlier question).
3:56
Dipoto's not a big free agency guy, either, though, so a trade's probably just as likely. Think guys that can play defense and get on base. (Though they were in on Marcell Ozuna despite his lackluster OBP last winter.)
