Not just someone to replace his value and then one additional prospect -- however well-regarded said prospect is.

I know last week you questioned why White Sox are pushing for rebuild. I know if things fall right, they could contend for a WC spot next, especially if a piece or two was added. I just don't think that's the right path, especially now. After 2017, Frazier, Lawrie and Melky are free agents. Not saying those are 'core' pieces, but it creates new holes. The minor leagues are not deep enough to trade off prospects and it's a perfect winter to put a Sale or a Quintana on the market. It is not an easy route, but I really think it's what they should do.
Steve Adams
3:37
Losing Lawrie has almost no impact whatsoever... he's a borderline non-tender candidate. The loss of Frazier is notable, and Melky is an OK complementary piece. (Solid bat, crappy glove)

The Sox have Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton all controlled for at least three more years. There's no good reason to sell off right now with that type of core in a division that doesn't look overly strong (despite Cleveland's presence in the World Series).
3:38
Any winter is a perfect time to trade a healthy Sale or Quintana, because they're excellent pitchers who'll command enormous returns. I get the frustration from White Sox fans, but most teams would love to have that kind of core... hence the trade appeal of Sale and Quintana.

Today's the real holiday, half-price halloween candy. Should I go Kit Kat or Reese's Cups?
Steve Adams
3:38
Reese's. Always Reese's.
Though Kit Kats are OK. I don't even like candy that much, but those are two great ones.

Does Carlos Gomez want a starting job, or would he be ok with a backup role?
Steve Adams
3:39
No way he settles for a backup role. He's 30 and he was amazing in September/October.

Does Cleveland attempt to re-sign Napoli or do they save 1B/DH for Santana and Brantley next year?
Steve Adams
3:39
I'd fully expect them to make a decent run at re-signing him. They might not offer top dollar, but it might not fully matter in this instance. Napoli took less than market value to stay in Boston after he won a World Series there and seems to love playing in Cleveland and playing for Francona.

Will Wilson Ramos end up signing a short term deal
Steve Adams
3:40
I think he's still going to sign for at least three years and quite possibly four.

JD Martinez to the Red Sox for Benitendi, Joe Kelly and Marco Hernandez who hangs up first?
Steve Adams
3:40
Zero chance Boston gives up Benintendi for one year of JDM -- especially not if they're adding other pieces.
Grayson
3:41
Who will be the first free agent to sign a major league contract?
Steve Adams
3:41
There's honestly no good way of projecting this. That free agent and the team that's going to sign him don't even know the answer to that question right now.
Brandon
3:41
Giants have made due with some pretty poor defensive left fielders in recent years. Any Chance of getting a Trumbo or Napoli type and moving Belt to left to maybe save some money for bullpen help?
Steve Adams
3:43
I don't see how that saves them money, really. Trumbo or Napoli are going to cost $13-15MM annually this offseason, and then they'd still need to pursue 'pen help. I'd rather just see them sign Fowler or even Cespedes and then pursue relief help. They can afford it, and the idea of two of Trumbo/Napoli/Belt comprising a 1B/LF unit in the National League is frightening from a defensive standpoint.

Chances that Mike Trout actually wins MVP this year even though it should be a no-brainer?
Steve Adams
3:43
10-15%? I'll be genuinely surprised if he wins, but I agree, he's the clear winner.
Matt Holliday
3:44
I wanna stay in St Louis!
Steve Adams
3:44
And they want to get better on the defensive end of the spectrum. Sorry Matt.
Brian
3:44
Does Matt Holiday play in 17?
Steve Adams
3:44
Sure -- with an AL team on a one-year deal as a DH/1B/LF.

3:45
Can the Royals get a decent reliever for Cuthbert? Decent=better than Soria.
Steve Adams
3:46
Doesn't take much to be better than Soria. Your question depends entirely on the controllability of said reliever... If he's a free agent after 2017 or 2018, sure, but trading six years of Cuthbert for a short-term bullpen upgrade when Moustakas is one year from free agency doesn't seem shrewd.
If you're looking at someone controllable and excellent -- Hector Neris, for example -- then Cuthbert probably doesn't get it done on his own.
Dexter Fowler
3:47
DO I get $100m?
Steve Adams
3:47
He couldn't find more than $35MM on the open market last winter and he's a year older -- I don't see anywhere near $100MM.
I'm pegging him in the 50-60MM range and still feeling not great about that because his market was so limited last winter, but he's a good enough player that on paper that seems like a steal.
Eric Thames
3:48
What kind of market is there for me coming back from Korea? Do I get a major league deal?
Steve Adams
3:48
I think you can get a big league deal, yeah, but the scouts I've talked to about Thames don't seem overly excited about the notion of signing him, and he could get pretty big money by going to Japan, so he may just go that route.
Darren
3:49
Jansen or Chapman. Who gets a bigger contract?
Steve Adams
3:49
I lean Chapman due to the velocity, left-handedness and lack of a qualifying offer.

Similar to "Former first rounder", I can't stand when baseball writers say "Player was recalled from minors" when referring to a player who will be making their MLB debut. It's "Called up" not "recalled".
Steve Adams
3:50
If the player is on the 40-man roster, then "recalled" is correct. Because he's on the 40-man roster, he was in Major League camp and subsequently optioned to the minors to open the year.

If he's being added to the 40-man roster for the first time, the terminology should be that his contract was selected.
Mike Trout
3:50
Am I the best player you've ever seen in your life?
Steve Adams
3:51
Mike Trout is the best player most of us have seen in our lives. I did grow up watching prime Griffey and A-Rod though, which was pretty great. (Well, watching on ESPN not watching regularly... I'm from Minneapolis not Seattle.)
3:52
But the Mariners were always my second-favorite growing up largely because of Griffey and A-Rod and how awesome they were.
