MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 12/19/16

Steve Adams

He looked fine in Arizona, too. 1.55 ERA through June 21 ... got rocked for six weeks (.625 BABIP in that time), and closed out the year with 21 innings of 1.66 ERA ball. Averages 96 mph on his heater, misses bats, has decent control
4:00
He'll have a much better outfield defense behind him and a bigger park in 2017-18 -- both of which should help. I love the signing for them.
Patrick

HI Steve, which reliever could get the White sox a greater return. David Robertson or Nate Jones?
Steve Adams
4:01
Jones has more value -- controlled through 2021 for a fraction of the price.

Do you love Hip-Hop more then baseball?
Steve Adams
4:02
I do not. Sorry Cookie.
Say hey to Grover for me. Love that dude.

Any news on Jared Weaver and a potential landing spot?
Steve Adams
4:03
Nah, but I can see him landing somewhere like San Diego on a one-year deal with a pretty weak base salary. He's a depth option/fifth starter for most clubs at this point. Maybe Dipoto brings him to Seattle as Plan E or F or something if his first few rotation options don't come to fruition.

Weiters make sense to the Angels, or is Boras still asking for way too much?
Steve Adams
4:03
Likelier that they add someone cheaper. Nick Hundley?
Jake
4:04
Saw the article about why it makes sense for O's to deal Machado. Who's more likely to get traded down the road, him or Trout?
Steve Adams
4:04
Machado -- much closer to free agency, and doubt the Orioles love the idea of offering him $375MM or whatever it's going to take to sign him.

Grover says "Where there is life there is hope".
Steve Adams
4:05
Word, Grover. Word.

Now that the Pirates have made its first pickup of the offseason, will they move towards a SP? E. Santana perhaps?
Steve Adams
4:06
Ervin at $13.5MM per year seems pricey for them. They'd need to the Twins to pick up some of that money, I'd think, but then they'd have to part with more in order to make it work.

Best overlooked bullpen arm still available in free agency?
Steve Adams
4:08
I'd probably have said Daniel Hudson 12 minutes ago, ha. Joe Blanton's been really good since coming back but seems to draw a lot of the "oh gross Joe Blanton" comments from people who still think of his 2013 with the Angels.
Or 2014. Whatever terrible year that was.

Why does everyone always say "cash considerations" or "traded for cash?" I highly doubt teams are exchanging $500,000 in cash
Steve Adams
4:09
It's the industry term, for whatever reason. When we get press releases announcing those moves, "cash considerations" is the term that's in there. I don't understand it but I do like poking fun at it myself from time to time
Larry
4:10
Almora for Wheeler?
Steve Adams
4:10
Wheeler didn't even pitch last year, though he did burn a full season of MLB service. I wouldn't trade Almora for him.
Eric
4:11
Out of curiosity, what is the normal amount (or normal range in amounts) of money when teams say cash considerations?
Steve Adams
4:12
it ranges, and it doesn't get released all that often. I've seen recent deals for $25-50K, but there are also instances where it's literally $1 -- it's just a procedural thing sometimes. Brad Mills went from Milwaukee to Oakland a for a dollar a few years ago.
Brewers were basically just saying "We don't have a spot for you but we'll 'trade' you to this MLB team that wants you."

What can I honestly get for Smoak?
Steve Adams
4:13
I was shocked they signed him for two more years this past summer. I don't think there's any trade value there.
Comparable players in free agency will be signing for 1/3 and 1/4 in a few months probably.
Greg Holland
4:13
Who's going to sign me?
Steve Adams
4:13
No point in deviating from my stubborn Nationals guess at this juncture.
Eric
4:14
What is a realistic haul the Tigers could get in return for a pitcher like Verlander? similar to Sale value or not even close?
Steve Adams
4:14
Verlander is older and is owed more than double what Sale is making over the next three seasons. Plus, JV has a full no-trade clause.
4:15
Ok I've got to wrap this up. Jason will chat on Wednesday night at 6:30 CT. Thanks for joining everyone! You can bug me on Twitter if you're so inclined: @Adams_Steve
