MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 12/27/16

Steve Adams
4:01
Full disclosure -- I'm an hour late on the chat today solely because I'm a bonehead and didn't think about the fact that I'm in visiting family in MN right now, not home in NY, and thus botched the start time due to time zone issues. Apologies! Happy holidays to all. Let's go
Luke

Brian dozier to the Cards?
Steve Adams
4:02
I still think if anyone gets him, the Dodgers will. St. Louis won't part with Reyes in a Dozier deal, I'm sure, and De Leon is a better prospect than Weaver. Maybe the Twins really like Kolten Wong and would be interested in a Wong+Weaver+other prospect package, but the Dodgers have a more pressing need and more pitching to offer, it seems.

Could Wieters somehow wind up with the Halos?
Steve Adams
4:03
I'd be surprised to see him go there unless the move some other salary off the books. They've been pretty CBT averse and you have to think that adding Wieters would jeopardize that.

Is Bautista going to get a deal before spring training or do a Nelson Cruz thing?
Steve Adams
4:04
There's no great way of knowing which corner outfielders/first basemen are going to shake loos from the market logjam first. But, my bet is that Bautista's track record gets him a deal before some of the lower-upside names, even though he'll come at a greater price.

Joe smith to mets, why hasn't this happened yet?
Steve Adams
4:05
Because the Mets aren't spending money until they can jettison one of their corner outfielders (i.e. Jay Bruce).
Jake
4:05
Happy holidays! Is cashman going to give up any of yankees top 5 prospects to get quintana?
Steve Adams
4:06
If the Yankees weren't seriously in on Sale, I don't see why they'd suddenly pivot and now be seriously in the mix for Quintana, who will cost just as much. I don't buy into the Yankees/Quintana rumors all that much.
Cory
4:06
Why hasn't Dozier been traded yet?
Steve Adams
4:06
Because the Twins have zero reason to rush to make a deal done and don't like the secondary/tertiary pieces the Dodgers are offering alongside De Leon.
Peter Stratos
4:07
Who will play right field for the O's in 2017?
Steve Adams
4:08
Someone who's not currently in the organization. I still like Angel Pagan as a fit for them and was genuinely surprised to see a report suggesting that Rajai Davis had surpassed him on their wishlist. Truthfully, Baltimore doesn't even know who's going to play RF for them yet next year, but I'll go with Pagan as my pick.

Is San Diego a possible landing spot for Jason Hammel?
Steve Adams
4:09
Fit works for me, though the Friars seem more set on short-term deals and I think Hammel's still going to command multiple years. Have to wonder what his agents were asking when they hit the market, though, for him to have such a small amount of chatter surrounding him and then change representation in mid-December.

4:10
Should the Cardinals consider extending Oh before he hits free agency?
Steve Adams
4:11
Might be tough to line up on a price. One more year like the one he just had and he might be able to command $8-10MM on a multi-year deal. He's made his fair share of money in Korea and Japan prior to coming stateside as well, so he might prefer to just bet on himself and find a bigger open-market payday.
But yeah -- I'd explore the possibility at the very least.

What FA SP makes the most sense for the M's?
Steve Adams
4:12
Jason Hammel? They need some stable innings in the middle of the rotation, and Safeco will somewhat mitigate his slight fly-ball tendencies.
Daniel Preciado
4:12
Where does Tyson Ross end up?
Steve Adams
4:13
He's probably not signing until Feb. when he's closer to fully recovered, and two thirds of the league is intrigued by him. There's no good way of knowing, and that's not an exciting answer, but it's the truth. He has no idea where he's going to sign right now.
Tim Lincecum
4:13
Do I ever pitch again ?
Steve Adams
4:14
Don't see why someone wouldn't give him a minor league deal. Maybe at this point he's more open to a one-inning relief role. That'd be an intriguing possibility for me.
Steve
4:14
Matt Weiters to Nationals
Steve Adams
4:15
Yeah I don't mind the fit -- means they have to move Lobaton or Norris (Lobaton would be easier), but he'd give them a more certain option from an offensive standpoint.
Jeb
4:15
What would the Pirates have to give up to get Quintana? What are the actual chances it happens?
Steve Adams
4:16
Glasnow or Meadows would have to front the package. It'd take multiple MLB-ready pieces... say Glasnow and one of Kuhl/Brault, perhaps, then another pair of really solid prospects. He's every bit as valuable as Chris Sale was.

What is the perfect question to ask you?
Steve Adams
4:16
YOU'VE FOUND IT.
Derek
4:17
Is Joe Blanton a fit for the Twins?
Steve Adams
4:17
He's a fit for any team looking for 'pen help, but he wants to pitch out West and can probably find a team closer to contending than Minnesota. (Not that that's a high bar to clear)
Jeb
4:17
What are the chances it actually happens though? 10%? 50%? 80%?
Steve Adams
4:19
I don't put percentages on these things because there's no actual way to do that. I don't think they'll actually spring for it, so I guess that puts me down at somewhere (well) under 50 percent. These things aren't scientific, though, so putting a hard number down is just sloppy and misleading.

Should Hahn focus on position prospects or best prospects even if it means more pitchers?
Steve Adams
4:19
Always take the best package, position be damned.

How do you feel about the Encarnaaaaaccciiiiion Signing? Did the Indians do good?
Steve Adams
4:20
Love it for Cleveland. I thought Edwin would get $30-40MM more this offseason and had a chance at five years. Plus, the idea of paying Mike Napoli $12MM+ on an annual basis is not an appealing one.
