Did you watch the Super Bowl? Any thoughts on the game, halftime, commercials, etc?
Steve Adams
4:06
Game was tons of fun -- I had no rooting interest, so I didn't care too much -- and Gaga's performance was great. Commercials this year felt weak overall
Kevin
4:06
If Machado gets "only $265m" then his great great great great grandkids will probably have to go to work 200 years from now.
Steve Adams
4:07
The same probably applies to him "only" getting 160. Doesn't matter. Players don't really take $50-75MM discounts.
Mike
4:08
Do you think if Oaklands pitching keeps trending upwards, they have the offense and defense to contend?
Steve Adams
4:10
I think the A's will be better than most people want to give them credit for right now, but genuinely contending in the AL West is going to require a lot of things to break their way.

But hey, that happened with the 2015 Twins, and they weren't a great team by any means.

Astros package Daz Cameron, Evan Gattis, and George Springer to the ChiSox for Jose Quintana and Jose Abreu...who hangs up first?
Steve Adams
4:11
I don't think either team's going to consider that to be all that great of a fit for them, but the White Sox aren't getting enough long-term value there, and Gattis doesn't add anything in terms of positive trade value to that package
Why aren't you Jeff Todd?
4:11
I need me some Jeff Todd today.
Steve Adams
4:12
I ask myself this question daily. My beard game would be so much stronger.

Favorite baseball name of all time on three, one, two, three!! Yorvit Torrealba!
Steve Adams
4:12
Joey Pankake. I mean, c'mon. Now the dude just needs to make it to the Majors.
4:13
Also, the Padres have a dude that is, I believe, named Henry Henry.
They sure do:
Bill
4:14
Why not Brett Gardner to Detroit, Burrows and Ashe Russell to CWS, Mateo and Michael Andujar also to CWS, Quintana to NY?
Steve Adams
4:14
Because the Tigers don't want another old player on a large contract, and that package doesn't have the Yankees giving up anywhere near enough to get Quintana
Henry Henry
4:14
I've been waiting to finally get mentioned in one of these chats
Steve Adams
4:15
Your patience is almost as appreciated as your majestic name.
Rangers fan
4:16
You think after Napoli, the Rangers are pretty much done this offseason?
Steve Adams
4:16
Still room for another cheap 1B/DH bat or a fourth OF/Gomez insurance. Nothing too flashy, but Pedro Alvarez or someone like Angel Pagan (again, if he's willing to be a fourth OF type) both would fit there.
Mike
4:17
Quintana and Abreu for Bregman, Martes, Tucker and Cameron works better, right?
Steve Adams
4:17
Bregman's inclusion in anything is an immediate non-starter for me.
Bill
4:18
Gardner's contract not very large nor too long. CWS getting 2 recent #1 picks (
Steve Adams
4:19
Doesn't matter. The Tigers were looking to spend about $2MM on their CF this year and instead just made a minor trade for Mikie Mahtook. They're trying to drop below the luxury tax, and Gardner adds $13MM annually to their CBT ledger. And the fact that Beau Burrows was a first-round pick doesn't make him an immediate Quintana-caliber piece. That scenario didn't make sense for a number of reasons.
Sandy
4:19
Do Lugo or Gsellman have a high upside?
Steve Adams
4:20
I think both of them can pitch in the back of a rotation for the next several years. Just not the Mets' rotation, barring injuries to others within.
RunawaYEM
4:20
(Not to mention, Ashe Russell plays for the Royals)
Steve Adams
4:21
Ha -- I didn't even look at it closely enough to bother catching that. Too many other immediate red flags
Mario
4:21
Is De Leon as good as advertised?
Steve Adams
4:22
How has he been advertised to you? If it's as the Rays' next ace, then no. If it's as a possible mid-rotation starter with some strikeouts but probably some home run issues as well, then sure, he can be that good.
Racing Presidents
4:23
Who closes at Nats Park this year?
Steve Adams
4:24
At this point, I'm picking either David Robertson or Shawn Kelley, with the latter striking me as more likely. They don't seem to want to pay Robertson AND give up prospects.

They could try to do something like just take on most of Joakim Soria or Ryan Madson's deal as an alternative. I doubt either would command much in the way of prospect return and neither costs as much, financially speaking, as Robertson. But that's just speculation, and neither had a great 2016.
4:25
Erick Aybar is indeed signing with the Padres -- going to throw a quick post up on the site but will be back in a minute or two
Ryan Howard
4:27
Am I done?
Steve Adams
4:28
I can see some team giving him a minors deal and letting him fight for a bench job, but he'll have to earn a roster spot. He did look OK against RHP down the stretch in 2016, though his overall performance against them was poor, and he obviously didn't hit lefties either
Matt Silverman
4:31
What would get me CJ Cron? Ramirez & Cedeno?
Steve Adams
4:32
Erasmo for Cron makes some degree of sense, though I'd prefer Erasmo. I don't see any need to add a second piece in there. Cron's a fairly limited player, and coming across those with his skill set isn't especially difficult.
Ethan Yankovich
4:32
Who starts at second for the Braves between Peterson and Rodriguez?
Steve Adams
4:33
Rodriguez probably has the inside track just because of the contract, but it's easy to see a platoon eventually shaping.
