MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 4/11/17

Pete O'Brien
4:32
Any chance he gets to replace Gore and bring some beef to the Royals lineup?
Steve Adams
4:34
I'm sure he'll be with the Royals at some point, but I wouldn't get especially excited about the power display he put on in Spring Training. I don't have much in the way of expectations for O'Brien. And if any team in the league did, he'd probably have commanded more than a marginal injured minor league righty in a trade.
Brian
4:34
I don't think a team would want to let him out early. I could see something where he gets a cut of merchandise sold that involves him (jerseys, shirseys, bobbleheads, etc.). He can also make more in endorsements.
Steve Adams
4:36
No team would be really excited by the idea of letting Otani go earlier than the six years for which they'd normally be able to control him. But if the difference in signing him or not signing him is letting him duck out a bit early, then why not make that concession? That's a totally speculative scenario anyhow -- I just can't fathom him taking a signing bonus of a few million bucks and then earning pre-arb salaries for three years before entering the arb process like a standard pool-eligible international FA

Diaz and Torres in the Padres bullpen look to be the real deal , do you see pads trading Maurer and hand to get some more youth sometime soon
Steve Adams
4:38
I could see Maurer and/or Hand both being traded this summer if they command strong returns, but that has nothing to do with anyone else in their bullpen. The Padres are trotting out one of the worst rotations in recent history and a lineup comprised of half rookies. They're not overly concerned with fielding a competitive 2017 club -- they're hoarding talent. And if Maurer/Hand fetch more of it, then sure. Preller will probably be willing to move almost anyone (probably with the exception of Myers and any of the guys with under a year of service like Margot, Renfroe, Hedges, etc.)

Do you get tired of people asking about player and team trends roughly one full week into a 162-game season? Also, do you play daily fantasy baseball?
Steve Adams
4:39
Eh, it comes with the territory. It is what it is.

I used to play daily fantasy from time to time but haven't done so in recent years.

Did you guys (chat hosts) decide to actively skip non-baseball question, at least tone down the frequency of those questions? Chats seem cleaner with more explicitly baseball related questions.
Steve Adams
4:41
I haven't gotten all that many quick and easy ones to answer this week. I don't really care about the few malcontents who whine and say "THIS IS A BASEBALL CHAT" when someone asks me about my favorite beer or what the coolest part of my recent vacation was. It's a free chat, and the sheer volume of those types of questions I get when I make some comment that would solicit them -- e.g. Back from vacation! or whatever I said when I got back from a two-week trip -- suggests that most people are fine with it.

Guys like Keith Law, Eno Sarris, etc. -- virtually every other baseball chat host I've looked in on occasionally around the Internet have some brief interludes. It helps keep things fresh for the hosts, and if you want to whine about the answers in a free baseball chat, you're free to seek out another one as far as I'm concerned. Even this is a long answer, it took all of a minute out of what is supposed to be an hour-long chat that I've already extended to 70 minutes.
Love the Game
4:42
WBC was good. Why the haters?
Steve Adams
4:43
I love the WBC. I think some people hate it because they perceive it as an injury risk, but the number of players that got injured in Spring Training was greater than the number of players injured in the WBC. I don't know for a fact that that statement holds true on a percentage basis, but I'd wager it does.

I think some people think it's stupid to see a bunch of guys they've never heard of, but why wouldn't you want to see the best talent from Japan, Korea, Cuba, etc.? I don't get the hate -- I think it's fantastic.

I wasn't complaining; was just curious.
Steve Adams
4:44
Didn't perceive it as a complaint , just to be clear
Catcher Corner
4:44
Most likely to get 350 at bats this year: Mesoraco, T. Murphy, any Brewer's catcher from Pina/Bandy/Susac?
Steve Adams
4:45
I'll go with Bandy I guess. Between Murphy's injury and the fact that the Rox love Wolters' framing (plus his left-handedness, giving him the platoon advantage more often), I don't think MUrphy gets there. And I can't reasonably project Mesoraco to even get 250 PAs after missing the past two seasons.

Rogers Center worst park in MLB?
Steve Adams
4:46
Trop. Coliseum. Sorry Rays and A's fans, but I don't think many of you will argue with me.
Mets
4:46
Do you see the Mets trading Bruce at the deadline ?
Steve Adams
4:47
Maybe if he has a huge first half someone will want him, but they couldn't even give him away this winter. It'll probably be easier once the supply of passable OF options is more scarce and injuries/underperformance have created more holes around the league, but I don't think he'll fetch much.
Plus, if he's hitting well and the Mets are contending, they may elect to hold onto him.
(And if he's not, then who wants him?)

Braves back in the running for that last place in the majors trophie? Rust is showing through the spay paint that was suppose to last the season....
Steve Adams

Again: One week of games.

Over/Under number of starts I make this season: 13
