As the great Randy Jackson once said, yeah, that's gonna be a no from me, dawg.
Jason Mackey
1:21
They were gonna have trouble fitting Cole at $2.1 million. Even at half of what Martin makes now ($4.85), that's not going to work, especially not for an aging player who probably doesn't fit that well anymore.
Chris

Would JR be looking for a 3rd line LW today so that Guentzel could move up with Sid?  Sid seems to be getting the short end of the stick right now with wingers..
Jason Mackey
1:23
Cullen could check that box, but I don't think it's as much of a priority as, say, depth on defense or, given today's events, another goaltending option. ... If you play Guentzel with Sid and Sheary (try Sid and the Kids), Malkin with Hornqvist and Hagelin, you could have a third line of Rust, Brassard and Kessel. There's zero concern with that. They have the pieces. It's a matter of getting them in the right places.

Did you know that Conor Sheary is engaged to Mike Sullivan's niece?  This is a serious question....are there relationship conflicts of interest in the sports world similar to any other line of work?
Jason Mackey
1:23
They're actually married now, FYI. But, no. Sullivan treats Conor the same as every other play. You'd never know they were related unless someone told you.

why dont they trade for Kevin Shattenkirk?
Jared
1:23
Besides Hunwick, who could be moved in order to clear space? Would they move a guy like Sheary?
Sean Gentille
1:23
Connauton's offensive numbers seem decent for a third-pairing guy (goals, shot generation, etc.). He's on the ice for a lot of shots against, but so are the rest of the Coyotes. I dunno ... he's a guy. Statistically isn't similar to Hunwick, if nothing else. This is based mainly on me briefly looking at some charts.

Hi Jim! Do you have a plan to fill the hole in the defence? Any players in the minors that could fill in the role of 6th D-Defenceman in our team? Ian Cole was tremendous shot-blocker and his skills will be greatly missed, especially when Hunwick, despite his not so good speed, is just mediocre in his best days, not to mention low chemistry with Oleksiak. When the Play-Off begins it will just be harder and harder. Greetings from Poland! Let's go Pens!
Jason Mackey
1:24
Just so you know, Lucas, Jim Rutherford isn't actually here. Although that would make for one heck of a chat if he was. ... To answer your question, though, I do think the Penguins will acquire a defenseman in the 6-7 mold, a guy who could maybe play but also function as a healthy scratch.

I want Hjalmarrson just to hear yinzers try to pronounce it

JOMMERSIN
Jason Mackey
1:27
Try is the operative word here.

Any chance pens get a d-man at the deadline
Jason Mackey
1:27
A very good one, yes.
Nancy Selene
1:27
Moon Township!! How bad did the Matt Murray injury look?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Not that bad. He tried to stay for a bit, but then left. Hate guessing with head injuries because you can't, but it wasn't overtly gruesome or anything like that.
Smatt Shunwick
1:28
The Pens are getting any more defensemen, right?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Yes. I'm confident they'll get one of those.

Is anyone else surprised Letestu has stuck around the league as long as he has and still has value?
Sean Gentille
1:29
On some level, yeah, because he's short and a pretty bad skater, but he's also smart, a pretty good playmaker, a good faceoff guy and a special teams option. Good for him.
Steve
1:29
I am out of the loop. What’s Ruhwedel’s status? Is he a healthy scratch or still on IR?
Sam Werner
1:29
He's healthy. Seventh d-man right now.

What is the likely hood of Hunwick being traded?
Sam Werner
1:31
Probably not great. His contract looks just as bad for the other 30 teams as it does for the Penguins.
Andy
1:32
Go-to chipotle order?
Sean Gentille
1:32
Barbacoa burrito, black beans, sour cream, cheese, hot salsa *and* pico, a bag of chips, no guac, and some norovirus
Sam Werner
1:33
Chicken burrito bowl, black beans, all three salsas, sour cream, cheese. Oh, and lettuce. To make it healthy.
Sean Gentille
1:33
Panera -- overpriced and deeply offensive to my sensibilities
Sam Werner
1:33
The bread is good though.
Sean Gentille
1:34
"Here, have some bread with your bread. You're gross. That'll be $15."
Sam Werner
1:35
"Also would you like to leave a tip?"
Mark
1:35
Why are the Penguins still infatuated with Cullen?
Sam Werner
1:35
I think at this point it has just as much (probably more) to do with his leadership as his contributions on the ice. Cullen can play the wing if need be, but a move at this point would be more about getting Cullen back in the locker room than adding to the Penguins' lineup.
Adam
1:36
What is the downside to placing Hunwick on waivers? Not overly familiar with the process, but could that clear up enough cap space to bring in someone else?
Sean Gentille
1:36
You can't stash bad contracts in the AHL anymore. It's basically The Wade Redden rule.
1:38
If someone claimed him on waivers, they'd be free of his contract but ... that would entail someone claiming him on waivers and assuming that contract.
Steven
1:39
Why do you consider Hunwick's contract so bad when he's so extremely similar to Cole by pretty much all analytics (and massively outplaying him since coming back on November 18th)? No one said Cole's contract was bad.
