Is ZAR going to remain with club for rest of season and post season?
Sam Werner
2:32
He has definitely bought himself some time with his recent play, but I wouldn't pencil him in to the postseason lineup quite yet.

Any updates?
Sam Werner
2:32
Just got another Dr. Pepper.
Ken
2:32
What did you guys think of the Bruins trading for Nash?
Sam Werner
2:33
I think it was a move they basically had to make, and one that made sense for a lot of reasons, but mannnnn they paid a lot to get him.
Sean Gentille
2:33
Pretty big price to pay for 2018 Rick Nash, but I think I'm kind of done ripping teams who go for it.
Sam Werner
2:34
Yeah I agree. The rest of the season and the playoffs are better when good teams push their chips to the middle of the table.
Sean Gentille
2:34
Like ... is it insane that the Preds gave up a first-round pick for Ryan Hartman? Yeah, a little, but what's the overall point of all this, really?
2:35
What does a late first-round pick turn into, anyway? Ryan Hartman?
Bill
2:36
Think the Pens would be interested in signing Reaves in the offseason as a Free Agent?
Tim
2:36
How do the Pens look in 3-5 years? Have they given too much up to win now?
Sean Gentille
2:36
You can't give up too much to win when 87 and 71 are still around. This isn't ever going to happen again. Worry about 2023 in 2023.
Jason Mackey
2:36
No. I think he's going to want to stay in the Western Conference.
Sam Werner
2:37
Also, the best way to build in the NHL is bottom out and pick high in the draft multiple years in a row. Penguins in good shape to do that post-Crosby/Malkin.
Sean Gentille
2:37
That said, not having a post-Maatta first-round pick on the roster right now is kind of amazing. Just keep kicking the can down the road, maximize your shots in the 87/71 window, choose to suck for a few years and see what happens.
Sam Werner
2:38
I think it's almost a game for Rutherford at this point. See how many years he can go in a row without a first-round pick. Came close last year, didn't want to risk it this year.

Not to live in my fears, but I wonder if the recent trend toward referees swallowing their whistles for Pen's opponents and now Reaves' absence puts a bit of a dark cloud on the horizon. Your take?
Jason Mackey
2:39
I think you're overcooking it, Fred. Don't live in your fears. Mike Tomlin doesn't.

Hi again! 1) A 3rd rounder for Antipin or 2) Dea + 5th for J.Benn. Is that possible? Which one would you pick please? Antipin might have a connection with Geno and is a fit as a mobile D. And J.Benn could be a Cole's replacement... Maybe both?
Jason Mackey
2:41
I would pick 2) if I had to pick one. I have no idea if it's possible. I'm not Marc Bergevin and have no clue what he wants for Benn, but it does sound reasonable. It's just what I would pick. Don't know about both.

Should GMJR have every potential trade candidate take a personality test prior to completing the deal?  I hear the coach can be sensitive at times.
Jason Mackey
2:41
The coach isn't sensitive at all. Sullivan has a strong personality. That's hardly unique among hockey coaches.

The initial Brassard deal that the league rejected - does something like that happen often? Was it a cap issue? It was exciting/sad to hear we were getting Brassard/losing Cole, but then later to find out we were losing Reaves too, well that just plain stunk.
Chris
2:41
I'd rather have Cole at $3m than Hunwick at $2.25m. Would he take less? Apparently not - or else he wouldn't have been traded. Unless there is some friction between him and Sully
Sam Werner
2:41
The initial issue was that Vegas didn't have anything tangible to trade to Ottawa for Brassard. That led to the creation of the Tobias Lindberg for a third-rounder transaction, which allowed the Knights to trade the third-rounder to Ottawa and acquire Brassard, so they could then retain the 40% of his salary necessary to make the deal work. Then Vegas flipped Brassard to the Penguins for Reaves and a fourth.
Jason Mackey
2:42
I think Cole will get much more than $3 million on the open market. Probably $4 or $4.5.
GJ
2:42
McDonagh? Any chance??
Jason Mackey
2:42
None.
Sean Gentille
2:43
At least the league didn't approve the trade, then decide later on to dis-approve it. That's a more typical move from them -- to just randomly decide that the thing you signed off isn't legal anymore, for no real reason.
Greg
2:44
Just curious, if looking at a #6 D. Would Pens be targeting more of a defensive shutdown guy...or another good puck moving guy
Sam Werner
2:44
My inclination would be a puck-mover. They've got Oleksiak back there for physical presence.
Andrew
2:45
What about a Vanek?
Sean Gentille
2:45
Let's stop asking about Vanek.

Amazing that the Pens won the cup without Letang last year, but this year, it will be a 1st round exit with Letang because Hunwick....p.s. he's had 3 minus games in his last 13 games played..
Sam Werner
2:46
If the Penguins lose in the first round I guarantee it will not be because of their sixth defenseman.
James
2:47
Sucked to lose Cole, but can’t complain when it’s bringing back Brassard. Not that I want to sell Sheary off in a down season, but is there any bottom 4 defensemen similiar age/cap you guys see that maybe Sheary could go 1 for 1 in a trade?
Sam Werner
2:47
Jason Mackey
2:47
Nah, I don't think they would do a one-for-one like that, to be honest. They can plug that hole cheaper. If you go $3 million for $3 million, you're allocating $5.25 to that spot between the acquisition and Hunwick.
Dan
2:48
Any rumors on Sheary? I would hate to lose him.
