NHL Trade Deadline Chat: 02/25/19

We will difinately see some type of trade today -- this is GMJR old lets pull the trigger on a deal.  This guy is the Clint Eastwood of NHL GM's.  Hahaha
Sean Gentille
2:20
He might be the director version Clint Eastwood of NHL GMs too. Eastwood is notorious for flying through shoots. After one take -- "Yep, that's good, screw it."
Peter Kadar

Can Rutherford speaking be viewed online or on the Penguins app...
Sean Gentille
2:21
I'm sure it can be. You can also just follow Mackey/Vensel on Twitter for it. They're in Cranberry ... I'm at my desk.

Is Pearson moveable and, if so, to whom and for what? That is a lot of dead space in the Pens lineup and on the cap
Sean Gentille
2:23
Can't speak to that, but I don't know why a team would acquire him AND structure it in a deal that'd make the Penguins better today. Maybe you cut bait if you can, but getting an immediately more-useful piece also seems impossible.

Columbus going all in while the Pens stay put doesn't bode confidence for getting 3rd in the division.   Although, and even though you can't really try to do it this way, it's probably better to finish as the top WC and play the Isles in the 1st round than playing the Caps in the 1st round.   So if the Pens could somehow land in that spot, it would give them the best chance in the 1st round.
Sean Gentille
2:24
While we're here — how big are those three games out of six against the Blue Jackets? Can't remember seeing that recently, and it's at a crucial time.
2:25
Lots of wingers still out there, obviously. Ferland, Simmons, Stone still haven't moved.
John Rosselli
2:27
So no movement on Panarin?
Sean Gentille
2:28
Doesn't seem like it. And really, why would CBJ move him, at this point? They've already bought a ton. Just roll with him and Bob, see if you can win something and see if they decide to stay.

It doesn't really seem fair the schedule makers gave Pens this outdoor game and 3 against columbus after trade deadline all in our last 20 games
Sean Gentille
2:29
You can just as easily flip the script; with a few tweaks, it's the Blue Jackets who have a gripe.
2:30
Three teams are in the mix for Ferland, per Pierre LeBrun. He's a name the Pens were connected to, though that was before the Panthers deal.
2:31
Letang will be evaluated day to day, per Sullivan.
2:32
Neither him nor Dumoulin will play against CBJ tomorrow.

I am starting to think that Botterelli was the brains behind the trades, what trades have panned out since he left?
Sean Gentille
2:33
Trades are Rutherford's thing. He's very open about that.

Bring up Prow
Sean Gentille
2:33
Ethan Prow has 15-16 goals for WB/S, right? Might as well see what he brings.
Peter Kadar
2:33
Is my undestanding correct -- NHL deals can be announced and hour or two aftter the deadline?
Sean Gentille
2:34
If the paperwork is done, the announcement can take a while, for sure. Doesn't happen much, but you'll see it from time to time.

could trevor daily be a reasonable defensive depth pick up for the pens. maybe for peatson
Sean Gentille
2:35
Daley, good as he was, has 7 points and putrid possession stats for one of the few worst teams in the league.

It's Tampa's year.   No way they mess it up again this year, do they?   If not, then everyone's paying for 2nd this year anyway.
Sean Gentille
2:36
Haha man, we've been saying that about Tampa for years. Love their model, love it moving forward, truly impressive top to bottom ... but I'm not giving them a single thing. Also, if this is sarcasm, my apologies.
John Rosselli

Thoughts on Jack Johnson?  Our blog site Pensburgh tends to be very negative on him.  I thought he was very good in Philly, given the circumstances.  I have liked him with Schultz and hope that pair sticks.
Sean Gentille
2:37
Hope for the best, I suppose. He's been mediocre-to-bad for his entire career, save for one season, and this season hasn't been any different. He is what he is.
2:38
I think the negativity surrounding Jackson is mainly fair. The facts are what they are, in my opinion. That's just me.
Matt Vensel
2:39
Hey, guys. Popping in to share a quick update. Kris Letang and Brian Dumoulin will not be traveling to Columbus, but Mike Sullivan said they are "day to day," so that's certainly encouraging for the Penguins.
Sean Gentille
2:39
Sullivan is saying that it wasn't just a paper transaction for Blueger. Guess he's gonna play some games in the AHL. Sullivan did say he's just a phonecall away, though.
2:41
Mark Stone to Vegas continues to circulate.
Mikael Granlund to the Preds, Kevin Fiala to the Wild.

2:42
What do you think of Columbus transactions
Sean Gentille
2:42
I think they attempted a ton of on-the-fly improvements but still have a lame-duck goalie who always stinks in the playoffs. Might as well try.

Thanks for sharing your perspectives and information from being  around the team in these chats.  I guess this is where JR makes the big money...tough situation.   Do you see the prices in the trade market being at that point were we stand pat?   And if so, any help in W-B?
Jason Mackey
2:44
Joeco: I think there's a good chance that's what happened. Just wasn't worth it for them to do anything.
Steeler Joe
2:44
Am I crazy for thinking the Pens should at least CONSIDER Simmonds? For exactly the kind of thing he brought to that game on Saturday. We're missing that physical presence and scrappiness.
Jason Mackey
2:44
Steeler Joe: Based on the Flyers' ask -- a first-round pick and a prospect -- I don't blame the Penguins for steering clear.
The ham.
2:45
Do you think that JR will be the GM to retool the pens after the Sid/Geno window closes?  I think that once Mario and Burkle decide it time to rebuild, they’ll do it with a new GM.
