NHL Trade Deadline Chat: 02/25/19

Jason Mackey
2:46
The ham.: I think that's fair, but Crosby and Malkin aren't really showing signs of slowing down, nor are the Penguins looking seriously at a rebuild. By the time that time comes, Rutherford will be in his mid-70s. I think it's OK to step away at that point.
Kevin
2:46
Surprised that Riley Sheahan hasn't been moved yet?   Will he go before the deadline?
Jason Mackey
2:46
Kevin: I am surprised, yes. I don't see what he adds to Florida, honestly. But with just 14 minutes until the deadline, I'd have to think he's staying put.
John Strange
2:46
Has there been any benefit from the Penguins early playoff exit last year as far as them seeming fresher?
Jason Mackey
2:47
John Strange: You would think so ... but no. Honestly. I have not noticed any tangible benefits. It certainly hasn't helped their consistency.
Peter Kadar
2:47
I agree Jack Johnson isnt going to become Paul Coffey or Dave Burrows #4 over the next 3 seasons.
Jason Mackey
2:47
Peter Kadar: And they don't need him to be. He's a third-pair defenseman. Granted, he's having to do more now. But if they're deploying him on the third pair, it's not a terrible add. For now.

Just realized ... Chris Kunitz ruined the Ottawa Senators.
2:54
He scored that goal against them a couple years ago, then they full self-destructed.
Ryan Whitney
2:54
Chris Kunitz also ruined my life.
Sean Gentille
2:55
From Mackey: "Jim Rutherford is a couple minutes late for his press conference. Have to hope Columbus didn't trade for him, too."
Yinzer
2:56
Kind of like how the Browns throwing a game ending interception against the Ravens instead of kicking the game winning FG wrecked the Steelers.  Had the Browns won, the Antonio Brown saga probably blows over, he plays in the playoff game, and the course of history is greatly altered.
Sean Gentille
2:57
So — Mark Stone is apparently going to extend with Vegas, and the Sens got a top-notch D prospect and a second-rounder for him. This has been your Mark Stone update. The chat is about him now.
2:58
Also, Robert Kraft's court date (first-degree misdemeanor solicitation) is April 24.
3:00
Caps are done, per WaPo.
3:01
Canadiens, Coyotes, Red Wings are done, per reports.
Canes aren't trading Ferland, per Dreger.
Paul
3:01
They could still announce deals after 3pm...  You just have to beat the clock by 3pm, correct?
Sean Gentille
3:02
Correct.
Scott
3:02
glad we kept our first round pick.
Brian
3:02
Looks like we will not be making the playoffs and if we do it will be one and done.  This team is not good enough as it sits.
Sean Gentille
3:03
They're currently in playoff position with a 73 percent chance to stay there.
Peter Kadar
3:03
Is GMJR speaking???
Jason Mackey
3:03
Supposed to talk at 2:45. We're in the media room waiting. That's all I can tell you.
CJ
3:03
Pens 1st round choice this year? Goalie or D man?
Jason Mackey
3:04
CJ: I think best player available, honestly. Maybe even a forward, too, after they got Addison last year.
Sean Gentille
3:04
Mark Stone is about to make, like $72 million.
3:05
Wayne Simmonds to Nashville, per LeBrun.
Daniel
3:07
Sean, the Pens are out of the playoffs right now, aren't they?
Sean Gentille
3:08
Yep, they lose the tiebreaker with Carolina, apparently. Either way, there's no reason to assume anything.
Marcus Johansson possibly going from NJD to Boston.
3:10
Aaron Portzline: "#CBJ may have a minor-league trade coming, but all indications are that they have kept Artemi Panarin through the 3 p.m. deadline"
From Mackey: "Penguins do have a move in the Central Registry queue, I'm told. That's why we're waiting."
^^read that
3:13
Simmonds to the Preds makes a ton of sense -- he's still really good on the PP, and they're horrendous there. Dead last in the league, which I just learned. Knew they were awful but wow.
3:16
Philly got ... not much for Simmonds. A conditional fourth and Ryan Hartman (who is fine)
Ron
3:17
It's 2:53.  What did GMJR have to say?
Jason Mackey
3:17
Ron, my man. Nothing yet. They have a trade in Central Registry, I'm told. Jim has not yet spoken.
Peter Kadar
3:17
This just in -- The Penguins are bringing back Sheahan, Brassardm and Lovejoy back along with Reaves...
Jason Mackey
3:18
And Brassard still wouldn't be happy with his role.
