Dusty seems like a great player's manager

Now, you don't keep the cleanup crew around to plot your corporate strategy.

Do you really want to hire Hinch, a guy who got, at the minimum, walked over like that? I'd be appalled.
Paul Sporer
9:00
Appalled? Really? Interesting.
AvatarDan Szymborski

I think he'll be looked at as a players' guy for that.
Remember, Jose Reyes *teammates* nominated him for a humanitarian award
People make the mistake of thinking players and elitist sports journalist Twitter think identically
GSon

Jose Reyes threatened his teammates... then..
Hugh Duffy

Hinch's baseball crime was also that he didn't stop the cheating when he could have. He's accepted responsibility for that, so I think it'll be easier for him to get back in the game once his suspension is over.
AvatarDan Szymborski

If he were *actively* aiding or planning it, I think it would have been harder.
If you don't think the difference between sportswriters and players in opinion isn't a gulf, just look at the COVID-19 opinion gulf.
9:03
Look at the percentage of writers who How Dare They Have a Season compared to the number of players who actually opted out once the salary stuff was worked out.

I HATE the don Mattingly manager of the year buzz that is all over the place he literally blew the most important part of the season
AvatarDan Szymborski

I did not have an award vote this year, but if I did and had manager, I would not have placed him on my ballot.
sadtrombone

I don't think the players would mind, but Hinch was a doormat. I'd hire him for the front office, but I just couldn't trust him to actually manage players. And Cora was actively aiding or planning it, so I'm just so surprised teams would be willing to turn over the keys do both of them.
Paul Sporer

isn't it based on Reg season?

Cora should notbe allowed to manage again so soon.  He still hasn't even come clean on all he did.  He is not someone who should ever be respected again.

What exactly did Mattingly do that was so bad?

What's the concern level with Gavin Lux compared with the beginning of the season?
Paul Sporer
9:09
Like 2-5% higher at most
Was gonna let chatter respond re: Mattingly, btw
John

He let the team vote on whether to play after getting positive covid test results
Cito's Mustache

The last few Buehler starts I've noticed he'll reach to his left hand near the base of his glove in between pitches. Are foreign substances not policed anymore?
Paul Sporer
9:11
Are they ever really? Basically as long as you don't have nine pounds of it on your neck like Pineda
9:12
Kimbrel's had that shitstain on his hat forever and no one says a word
Negs
9:13
Mattingly is just not a good manager IMO. Hard to see how he actually made the team better. SSS and some timely performances turned a not good team into a fine team.
Paul Sporer
9:16
Yeah some pretty good pitching drove it along w/the RISP hitting (113 wRC+, 10th in MLB)
tommytoms
9:16
why aren't foreign substances policed then?
Paul Sporer
9:17
The idea is that if you tell on a team, you tell on yourself. And pitchers are given some leeway bc batters would rather they have enough grip to not dome them but of course some take it too far

Fried's breaking stuff is breaking.
Hugh Duffy
9:17
So long as the foreign substance allows a pitcher to grip the ball better, I think hitters are ok with it. No one wants to get nailed by a pitch because the ball slips out of the pitcher's hand.
Paul Sporer
9:18
Anyone think Bauer might've been using more than normal accepted substance this year? His spin rate soared and he basically said the only way to do that is to use something
Negs

Nasty last two pitches to Muncy. Slow curve and 97 up and away. That's an unhittable combo. You'll see that on Pitch Ninja tomorrow.
