A lot of orcs wore helmets.

No, the way it works is that Gandalf wearing a mask would mean he wouldn't transmit his magic to others.

Off topic commercial questions: are you playing the next WoW expansion Dan?
AvatarDan Szymborski

Of course

Ha, I forgot to enter my name. No sense being witty if you can't take credit.

Ah jeez, did you hear about poor Tommy Pham? Apparently got stabbed today. He's fine now, but that must have been unpleasant.

Joe Buck - good announcer or overrated?
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:52
I think neither. He's a vanilla play-by-play guy who is probably just rated at this point.
Paul Sporer

Solid

He's not awful, but he's average and dependable and rarely says anything crazily stupid that gets you focusing on him rather than the game.
Paul Sporer
8:53
Used to REALLY dislike him as I thought he went through a period when he couldn't have cared less about the games he was doing. You'd hear his voice perk up just to do an NFL promo. But that was years ago. I think he's perfectly capable now.

We’re you guys surprised that the White Sox let Rick Renteria go?  I thought the White Sox has a very successful season.
Paul Sporer

I was... keeps getting screwed in Chicago
Hinch to CWS, in my opinion
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:53
I'm surprised in that I don't think teams usually let go average managers after good seasons.
But I'm not against the result.
8:54
There are a *lot* of people who have the qualifications to manage an MLB team. If you can't find reasons *for* a guy, just reasons *not to fire* a guy, I'd say that guy isn't good enough.
Teams, especially rebuilding ones, have the luxury of finding their dream marriage.
(And the White Sox aren't really rebuilding anymore, but they're early in their run)

If Hinch goes to CWS, and Cora to BOS (presumably?), who goes to DET?
Paul Sporer
8:55
Wait is Cora supposed to go back to BOS?
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:55
Kinda how I felt about Gardenhire with the Tigers. He's likeable and never really got in the way of the team's development, but when the Tigers are competitive, is Gardy really ever likely to be the DREAM MATCH?
8:56
That's been the buzz, but who knows at this point.
I don't really have a problem with a team hiring Hinch or Luhnow. They committed baseball crimes, not like real-life crimes, so I think serving their time *is* enough for me.
sadtrombone
8:56
Renteria absolutely bungled his bullpen management in the playoffs. I think it was a bit unfair, but they could hire whoever the Rays bench coach is and they'd probably be better.

8:57
How would hiring Hinch play in the clubhouse?
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:57
I don't think as bad as people might think.
Paul Sporer
8:57
Agreed
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:57
Hinch baseball crime wasn't as a mover of the cheating, it was as someone who didn't want to rat on his players.

Wait, are you saying Dusty Baker was the “dream marriage” for 5 different MLB franchises?
AvatarDan Szymborski
8:58
Even if him tattling to MLB immediately and cutting off the plan quickly would have been better for baseball, I think the reaction from players would be worse.
In certain positions, Dusty Baker *is* the dream marriage.
Dusty is an amazing manager for a certain type of team.
Paul Sporer
8:58
He's pretty well regarded. And honestly, apart from those who are still hung up on the Prior/Wood stuff, he's pretty solid IMO
AvatarDan Szymborski

A veteran team in which shit has fallen apart. Dusty can get that all back together again in the short-term.

Yanking Dunning in the 1st of Game 3 was enough for me to question his baseball acumen.

It was a bit too cute
Dusty's the cleanup crew. Clean up the mess Matt Williams left. Clean up the mess of the Trashcananigans.
