If Lyles hits the IL, does that almost force the Pirates to go out and make some sort of move for a SP? Or will they just continue with their bullpen/AAA experiments?
nubyjas wilborn

One would think so. Pitching was supposed to be the foundation of this team and they'd be down three starters. Lyles has been such a pleasant surprise. I don't know how they would make it without adding from the outside if he were to go down.

Do you have any sense for what the organization thinks of Dario Agrazal?  Or maybe you just have an opinion based on what you saw in spring?  I gotta say I'd rather see his name in the lineup today than Brault and his 5.7 BB/9.  His K/BB and ground ball ratios are nice and he'd even be on regular rest.

I was with the Class AAA team over the weekend. Agrazal is making steady progress and is highly thought of. I think they're trying to be patient with him.

Do you have any idea what dominoes will fall if/when Dickerson and Chisenhall get healthy?   We gotta hear Melky trade rumors pick up at some point soonish, right?
nubyjas wilborn
12:04
I'm honestly not sure. I have found that these things work themselves out. Dickerson is closer to a return, he isn't expected to play every day when he's back. They'll keep finding ways to work in Reynolds and everyone else.

Why does Hurtle leave his starters and releivers in so long. Years ago 4 runs you were gone. Middle relievers were gone after 4 batters. Managers would never let a middle reliever give up 7 runs.

each game has its own set of factors. You'd have to give me a specific situation and I could better answer. For instance, was it on a day when a few guys weren't available

I can’t help but wonder if Coonelly and Nutting are paying any attention to their ball club. If so, do you think they are giving Neal any advice or counsel?  Better yet, maybe talking about giving him some money for a starting pitcher? (Have you had a chance since you’ve been here to meet and speak with either Frank or Bob?)
nubyjas wilborn
12:08
Yes, they watch and pay attention. I speak to Frank on a regular basis and I've seen Bob several times since I joined the beat. I know saying nice things about either one, especially Bob will get me roasted. However, he has been kind to me in our interactions and he does care about winning. However, his messaging doesn't exactly exhibit that and payroll is fair to critique.

Before anyone starts the Dietrich commentary, I hope that I am not the only one that says, "Stop throwing him inside fastballs, and he'll probably stop hitting home runs!"  He's not the problem, nor are his celebrations.  It's our pitchers location and pitch selection that are the issues.
nubyjas wilborn
12:09
He's having a great season. I saw a lot of Dietrich covering the Braves and he's the same guy he's always been. If he runs into one he's gonna let you know it.

I was not against the Archer trade, and still glad they went for it last year. However, do you believe the Pirates did their due diligence in scouting the type of pitcher Archer is? It seems they missed, and there were signs last year he was being overhyped
nubyjas wilborn
12:11
I don't know if that's fair. Players change constantly. That said, Archer hasn't lived up to the team's or his own expectations. I've spoken to Chris on and off record a lot since I've joined the beat. I know how hard he works. I want to believe his work ethic will allow him to figure it out. But it's been rough. We'll see how it comes along.

Hi Gator.
Hear your nickname is sticking....or my leg really got pulled.

Ha, I'm with it.

This team can not come close to winning enough games to reach .500 at season's end. Will it be possible that there is a change in attitude from Bottom Line Bob to things have got to change?
nubyjas wilborn
12:13
I don't know. They'll likely point to injuries. And they'd have a fair argument. No team plans on losing Jameson Taillon and Trevor Williams.

12:13
What was the point of promoting Mitch Keller for one start?
nubyjas wilborn
12:14
They needed him then. The team still wants him to work on his slider and would prefer him to do it in Indy...

12:14
What will it take for ownership to understand that a relatively small ( about$15MM), but meaningful, boost in the team's payroll is necessary for the franchise to have any chance at success?
nubyjas wilborn
12:14
maybe, but I'll offer this, check out the Washington Nationals payroll and their record...

12:14
How can this team continue to send out AAA pitchers nightly and have them fail miserably.  I loved Bob Walk's comment on Sun that Neveraukas had an elevated ERA....at 23.00.  Is there anywhere to find reinforcements?  Too early for a trade?
nubyjas wilborn
12:16
Neal has noted that fewer than 3 percent of trades happen during this time of the year. It'd be tough to pull something off, but the Pirates may not have a choice...

What’s going on with Keone Kela? If he’s with team why has he not been activated yet?
nubyjas wilborn
12:17
Kela is still being evaluated and will throw a side session when the team returns to Pittsburgh.

I have to say , my wife & I flew fm St louis area to watch all 2 L A games , we come twice a year--Of course it was horrid--I can tell from the people in Pittsburgh that this is getting old , Im 57 & a pirate fan since 2nd grade & I have to agree with them--Its rough to watch year after year !

Josh Bell has been pretty fun to watch this season. Kyle Crick has evolved.

i understand Chisenhall is away from the team on a personal leave?  Do you have any insight as to what that is all about?   I read somewhere that he may be contemplating retirement?   Any truth to that?
SalemPirate
12:20
Next week is the draft, something I used to look forward to. But the Pirates miss on the toptier so much it's not really worth following any more. Gotta change, don't you think?
nubyjas wilborn
12:23
@Chuck, I want to answer this carefully. Lonnie had his first healthy spring in a few seasons. He was ready to get some extended playing and prove that he's still a quality player. Then in the last exhibition game, one that he probably could've sat out he got hit in the hand. Then as he recovers from that the hamstring and calf flare up again. I'm not sure if he's considering retiring, but one could imagine how frustrating it is for your body to continue to fail you.
@salempirate they sure hope so.

Are there any specifics about what’s going on with Keone Kela? He’s been with team for a few days and we haven’t activated yet?
nubyjas wilborn
12:25
He's being evaluated and will throw a bullpen when the team gets back to Pittsburgh. We'll know more soon.

So because Washington Nats are failing to win with a big payroll, that's justification for the Pirates paltry payroll?  Especially when they desperately need competent MLB starters and their AAA (AAAA) pitchers they are trotting out getting blasted?
nubyjas wilborn
12:26
I didn't say that. I used that example to say that just adding payroll isn't the answer.
12:30
Okay, I see there are several of you in here, feel free to ask questions. I'll give a few updates. Trevor Williams is throwing again, according to Todd Tomcyzk. Jordan Lyles played catch today and the team is encouraged about where he is after exiting the game yesterday. Francisco Cervelli is not with the team and will be evaluated on Thursday.

Who are some available starting pitchers we could pick up besides Dallas Kuechel? We certainly need some help with starting pitching.
nubyjas wilborn
12:33
Good question. Kuechel's situation is unique. There aren't any free agents I can think of. Most likely the Pirates would have to look a team in a worse position and see what they're able to do. San Francisco Giants, maybe?
