With the pitching problems, management limiting them to certain innings/pitch counts, yet starters left in to give up 6+ runs, doesn't seem to make sense. Given that we are rarely likely to keep a player beyond Free-Agency, why do they care about limiting pitchers counts? Recall that Steve Blass and others from his time had many complete games when they were successful.

That ship has sailed in baseball. Nobody is throwing complete games anymore. They're so rare now and have been for going on 5 or more years.

What did you think of the Stephen Nesbitt column in the Atlantic claiming basically that Hurdle would be back? It obviously blew up in his face and as I'm sure you know, he used to be the Pirates beat writer here. Is there any accountability for that guy for putting out such a misleading article? He should be fired imo.
nubyjas wilborn
12:46
Nesbitt did what any one of us would've done. Hurdle told him he was coming back. The reporter wrote what the subject said on the record. I'll tell you this the org wasn't happy with Clint for doing that. Nesbitt wasn't wrong. If Nesbitt wrote that and didn't have attribution then he would've been wrong, but the manager said it.

With the Pirates television contract with AT&T Sportsnet and the naming rights to PNC Park expiring soon, you'd think that Bob Nutting would want to put his best product on the field, in order to maximize the value of those contracts.  This money dictates the budget for the next decade at least, and I've seen no indication from the organization that they understand this.

This will be a pivotal offseason. Bob has a chance to spend some money. If he doesn't that will be telling.
Tim

When you look at the Rays and A’s they are usually competitive with small market budgets. Although the Rays do have a number of ex-Bucs, couldn’t resist. The point though maybe someone from an organization that wins but had a limited budget? That may take a new GM as well though

Yes, that's why when I gave my initial candidate list I made that a factor.

Expounding on my earlier question sir, do you think Bob Nuttting knows that there is major major discontent now among the fans and perhaps goes out of his comfort zone this offseason to sign some much needed free agents? And I don't mean the Lonnie Chisenhall types. I mean solid $10-15 million a year type players that could immediately help us. This might sound too optimistic but I think Nutting knows there is so much anger from the fans now he might need to shake things up a bit. Thoughts?
nubyjas wilborn
12:51
Bob is aware of the discontent. Bob does go to games regularly and speaks to fans he's aware. As I said earlier, he's also not going to be swayed but so much. Nor should he. Also, fans can't have it both ways. The Archer trade was the Pirates going for it. They had to give up prospects to do it, unfortunately it hasn't worked out. But they made a bold move.

Spending large sums on analytics is useless if you don’t have the athletes to implement what the analytics tell you. What needs to be changed to improve player developments?
nubyjas wilborn
12:52
you make a fair point, but player development takes time. Some times much longer than we want.
Dear Don
12:52
Yes, you are missing something--Nutting's net worth is useless. How much he is worth on paper doesn't mean anything. Heck, his net worth means absolutely nothing, because it's the revenue generated by the team that matters, not him personally. That's common sense.
nubyjas wilborn
12:52
Not quite a question but a fair counterpoint. I'll allow it.

Nubyjas, I know it is frustrating to follow the Buccos, and I see why people are mad. However, I find it annoying when people come into these chats and yell at your about ownership, like you can do something about it. Just wanted to say you always do a nice job handling those types of comments gracefully.

It's all good. I also know that I see things differently than a lot of media here which is good and bad. But if the worst part of my day is a few angry people on here or Twitter I'm having pretty good days.

They can’t really be counting on me to fill RF, can they? I remember you defend my defense like I was your first born, so thanks again for that.

Talk about an exaggeration. Bless your heart.

12:55
Don"t you feel sorry for Steve Blass? The timing of Hurdles firing was poor. The public relations dept.has to be going nuts.
nubyjas wilborn
12:55
He didn't feel sorry for himself. Blass enjoyed the day and the weekend and the season (as much as he could with the losing)

For an owner who tosses nickels around like they're manhole covers, it surprises me that they seem ready to pick up the option on Chris Archer.  Do you believe this is a good risk, or do you think the money could be put to more effective use?  Compare Archer's cost and production to Ivan Nova's, just as a convenient example.
nubyjas wilborn

I think they will pick up the option on Archer. I think they should as well. I still believe there is a better pitcher than he's shown. Maybe a new pitching coach brings it out of him...

You sighted the Archer trade as an example of fans “wanting it both ways.”  The reality is it was a bad move. A desperation move. Many analysts expected Archer’s decline. And are you an extension of the Pirates PR dept cause it sure sounds like it.
nubyjas wilborn
1:02
Gees, you need a snack. I said what I said, though. They made a move that hasn't worked. But they thought they were getting a front line starter to push them toward the playoffs. it failed. Also, let's see Glasnow have a full healthy season.

Have you followed Dejan and his attempts to get nutting to open the books? I think he is pulling out the major issues and is onto something with public funding, amongst other issues. Your thoughts?
Billy
1:02
Dejan K had a twitter back and forth with the mayor the other day and it seems that Mayor Peduto might start looking into the owner's books and investigate the guy. Do you believe this?
nubyjas wilborn
1:06
I posted both because y'all asked similar questions. There is an argument that a team is a public trust and should do its best to win. I somewhat agree, I'd love for the Pirates to be better, it'd make my life easier in a few ways. However, I'm not sure how I feel about the government getting involved. It is interesting to watch. If nothing else, Dejan is a passionate man when it comes to the fans and teams here.

Nubyjas, I enjoy the perspective you have of the Pirates, and you're correct about Bob Nutting.  He can run his business anyway he chooses.  Your columns are as close as I've gotten to PNC park in the last 2 years.  I've made my choice as well, and other should to.  PS- the term "shame on you" is really overused on the 'internets'.

Thank you. I'm passionate about telling the full story. Even if it upsets people or doesn't win me friends. I honor your choices.

How many more days do we have to endure you on the Pirates beat? I'd rather watch paint dry.

You know you looooove me. You know how I know you looooove me? Because you could be anywhere else in the world but you're right here talking to me. And I appreciate that. Thank you for your readership, AJ, you're a saint. Keep reading.

If I turn out to be good, the Archer trade may well go down in the annals as the worst trade this side of Babe Ruth? And yes, I need to have it both ways....
nubyjas wilborn
1:09
okay, call me when you get to the show and when Glasnow pitches a full season with good results.
Sandy

What the hell does Frank Coonelly even do? And I am 100% serious.
nubyjas wilborn
1:12
day-to-day operations of the organization
Jeff
1:13
How does what he do differ from what Huntingdon does?
nubyjas wilborn
1:16
Huntington is in charge of baseball operations. Frank biz development. Frank is the second-highest-ranking person other than Bob. Frank handles TV deals, naming rights, a litany of other business related deals for the team.
Sandy
1:16
So what does day to day operations even mean? You really must be part od the lame Pirates PR spin team.
nubyjas wilborn
1:19
Now, see, if I clapped back, I'd be wrong after this rude comment that is questioning my integrity. If you wanted elaboration all you had to was ask. But as I said, to Jeff, Frank handles the business side of the ballclub. That includes but isn't limited, TV rights, naming rights, MLB negotiations, stadium development, etc,
