starting pitching

AJ Preller likes international talent. Would we splurge and go after Kodai Senga-san? What would a deal look like?
Darragh McDonald
12:24
Senga is a little tough to peg. We're still formulating our predictions. Stay tuned for the Top 50, coming soon.

With the center fielder market so weak and the padres having Tatis moving to outfield as an option does Grisham still patrol center in 23?
Darragh McDonald
12:25
I think this is a good point, El Duderino.
The center field market is not strong, so they probably stick with Grisham.
His bat was subpar this year but he was still worth 2.1 fWAR because of his speed and defense.

Will San Diego have the best 1-2-3 in baseball once Tatis comes back? Tatis-Soto-Machado?
Darragh McDonald
12:27
If Tatis can jump back in and be his old self without missing a beat, that's a tremendous threesome, for sure.

Preller for Cashman and Hicks
Darragh McDonald

Many Yankee fans would love this.

Seems to me Kim should be at ss next year. Played Gold glove caliber defense and held his own at the plate. Yeah, Grisham played stellar defense, but couldn't hit, so put Tatis in CF. Your thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
12:29
I don't hate it from a pure baseball perspective. But there's also a human element at play. It's tough to know the right call without being in the clubhouse.
12:30
In 2021, it seemed that team cohesion played at least some part in the club's underperformance.
If moving Tatis to the outfield is going to make things miserable for the next decade, is that the smart move?

What's your take on the "Manny Machado doesn't sign with the Padres if they don't sign Eric Hosmer first" narrative?
Darragh McDonald
12:31
I don't know about Hosmer specifically, but I think it does help to show commitment.

With two two starting positions open for next year. Do you think Martinez would consider staying knowing he has a good chance to start this year coming up?
Darragh McDonald
12:32
This is a very interesting angle that I think the Padres should probably discuss with him.
12:33
Obviously, they like Martinez. That's why they signed him in the first place.
They have two holes in the rotation.
It could be a logical fit.
12:34
But I suppose if Martinez wanted more of a guaranteed starting role, he could sign with, say, the A's. There'd be almost no chance of him getting bumped out of the rotation there.

What's with that guy's take on Snell? Geeze, tough crowd. I thought he rebounded quite well this season!
Darragh McDonald
12:34
Agreed!

12:36
Thoughts on free agents for the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation? I don’t want to see Clivenger or Manea back
Darragh McDonald
12:36
This year's SP market is loaded with solid backend types if you don't like Clevinger and Manaea.
12:38
Tyler Anderson, Andrew Heaney, Martin Perez, Jose Quintana, Drew Smyly, Ross Stripling, Noah Syndergaard, Jameson Taillon, Michael Wacha, Matt Boyd, Zach Eflin, etc.
They will have lots of options, but almost every team will be shopping in this aisle to some extent.

What is the team going to do with Morejon? Is he a SP or a RP? The team should pick one and go with it. We all understand that he has never pitched more than 65 innings in a year, but at some point you have to see where he best fits given how exciting his stuff is.
Darragh McDonald
12:41
I believe the plan is for him to be a starter next year. But they probably can't just guarantee him a spot after  so much missed time.
He still has options so I would guess he probably opens the year as the sixth starter.

Will the Padres sign Soto to a long term deal?
Darragh McDonald
12:44
They will probably try, but Soto is slated to reach free agency just after his 26th birthday.
12:45
He's already banked a bunch of money and doesn't really need to settle for anything.
12:46
It'll probably take over 500 million or something at this point.
Super
12:46
How important is finding long term starting pitching this off season? They only have Musgrove locked in past next season.
Darragh McDonald
12:47
Yeah, this is a good point. Darvish and Snell are both entering their walk years.
12:48
The big batch of starters I listed earlier, some of them will require two- or three-year deals.
12:49
But guys like Senga, Eovaldi and Bassitt could be in the 3-5 range. Getting someone like that would make sense for the Friars if they have the money.

Am I crazy, or is the Padres best roster in '23 sees Soto in left, Grisham in center and Tatis with his cannon arm in right? I would hate to move Kim off SS and moving Cronenworth to 1B really hampers his value as most of his value comes from his defense. He would be a below average 1B and his sample size defensively there is too small to really have an idea of how he'd fare long-term. Tatis has zero leg to stand on, not with his MULTIPLE selfish failures and Bob Melvin leading this squad.
