I think he fits best on a rebuilding club who can give him lots of playing time.
If he bounces back, he gets flipped at the deadline.

Tatis Jr is one of the best players in baseball we will happily live with him you idiot
Darragh McDonald
1:07
I'm getting a lot of passionate responses on Tatis, which I understand.
However, I'm also getting a lot of "how do we get rid of Tatis" question.

But I've asked you not to come to my chats and call me an idiot, Uncle Jim.

Martinez and Suarez came out of nowhere and were cost-effective for the Padres last year. Any hints that Preller has a couple more of those lined up for next year?
Darragh McDonald
1:09
Preller does love to give these contracts will player options. On the one hand, that's not very smart because if the player is good, they'll just leave.
But then again, I'm sure players are noticing. If you're a free agent and want a bounceback deal like that, get your agent to call Preller.

What's your take on Preller's strategy? Assembling an elite farm system the likes of which MLB hasn't seen in years if ever only to basically trade the whole thing right when they were on the cusp.
Darragh McDonald
1:11
This is how a lot of teams operate. Build up the farm, assemble a core, trade the surplus to address the holes.
Curious
1:11
My man, how do you pronounce your first name? Genuinely just curious.
Darragh McDonald
1:12
The G and H are silent. So, it's basically just like Tara, but with a D. The first syllable rhymes with "car."
Tatis MVP
1:12
We need a God in our rotation. Or at least a Demi-God. What is our chances of signing Thor for the back of the rotation?
Darragh McDonald
1:12
Yeah, Thor was in that batch of decent mid-rotation guys I listed earlier. He makes sense for the Padres but also many other teams.

Oakland isn't signing Martinez at 2/16.
Darragh McDonald
1:13
I understand the skepticism but their penny-pinching ways means they have almost no money on the books. They can make a few modest signings and then flip all those guys later.

What about Joey Votto to the Padres at 1B/DH
Darragh McDonald
1:14
I've had a couple Joey Votto questions but I doubt he's going anywhere.
He has full no-trade and has consistently said he has no intent to waive it.
Maybe the fact that the Reds are rebuilding again and he's nearing the end of his contract makes his change his mind.
1:15
However, he's now 39 and coming off a down year.
If he can have a Pujols-style rebound next year and make this interesting, I would love it. But I don't think it happens in the winter.
Your Mom
1:16
Who do the Padres go after for a 4 and 5?
Darragh McDonald
1:16
My mom and Uncle Jim in the same chat. It's a family affair.
Profar
1:16
Do you really think Profar is going to opt out, if so why?
Darragh McDonald
1:17
Profar has a 7.5MM option for next year with a 1MM buyout. So, he can take the 1 mil and he would only need to find 6.5mm on the open market to break even.
1:18
He was worth 2.5 fWAR this year and is still just 30 years old. Seems like he should beat that figure easily.

What’s on yours?

I listen to all kinds of stuff but my wheelhouse is post-punk, post-grunge kinda stuff, I guess? I'm bad with music terminology. Talking Heads, Devo, Modest Mouse, Pavement, The Strokes, Bill Callahan, etc.
1:21
If it has some fuzzy guitars, I'm probably interested.
I'm also a sucker for a wry lyricist. Magnetic Fields, The Smiths, Jenny Lewis, stuff like that.
1:22
Lately, just listened to the Purple Mountains record and loved it, now getting into Alvvays.

Can Campusano be a starting caliber catcher?
Darragh McDonald
1:23
I think it's possible, sure. The bat certainly plays.
Reports indicate his defense has been improving.

Taylor Swift = post punk? After all, I think her first album came out after Minor Threat S/T...
Darragh McDonald
1:26
This is an excellent point.
Okay, we're getting close to an hour and a half so I should get back to the site.
